Cinematic Modernity Cosmopolitan Imaginaries in Twentieth Century Iran by Golbarg Rekabtalaei A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto © Copyright by Golbarg Rekabtalaei 2015 Cinematic Modernity Cosmopolitan Imaginaries in Twentieth Century Iran Golbarg Rekabtalaei Doctor of Philosophy Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto 2015 Abstract Cinematic Modernity explores the ―genesis amnesia‖ that informs the conventional scholarly accounts of Iranian cinema history. Critiquing a ―homogeneous historical time,‖ this dissertation investigates cinematic temporality autonomous from (and in relation to) political and social temporalities in modern Iran. Grounding the emergence of cinema in Iran within a previously neglected cosmopolitan urban social formation, it demonstrates how the intermingling of diverse Russian, Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, French and British communities in interwar Tehran, facilitated the formation of a cosmopolitan cinematic culture in the early twentieth century. In the 1930s, such globally-informed and aspiring citizens took part in the making of a cinema that was simultaneously cosmopolitan and Persian-national, i.e. cosmo-national. This dissertation explains how in the late 1940s, after a decade long hiatus in Iranian feature-film productions—when cinemas were dominated by Russian, British, and German films—Iranian filmmakers and critics actualised their aspirations for a sovereign national cinema in the form a sustained commercial industry; this cinema staged the moral compromises of everyday life and negotiation of conflicting allegiances to families and social networks in a rapidly changing Iran—albeit in entertaining forms. While critiqued for ―imitating‖ European commercial films, this cinema—known as ―Film-Farsi‖ (Persian-Language)–was highly ii informed by lived experiences of Iranians and international commercial motion pictures.

  • Analysis of the UIS International Survey on Feature Film Statistics
INFORMATION SHEET No. 1 Analysis of the UIS International Survey on Feature Film Statistics With the support of the Government of Québec and in collaboration with the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ), the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) launched a new international survey in 2007 to collect data on feature films. The analysis was based on a preliminary study by Ivan Bernier, Associate Professor, Université Laval and Serge Bernier, Associate Professor, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. Introduction The UIS International Survey on Feature Film Statistics is based on a new approach to gather internationally comparable and better quality data in the field of culture statistics. Cinema data elicit much interest because the film industry is experiencing massive transition and growth in certain developing countries. These data can also be relevant to the study of the diversity of cultural expressions. Data was obtained from 101 countries for the years 2005-2006, indicating a coverage rate of 49%. This is a relatively reasonable coverage rate for an international survey. In the majority of cases, the data were obtained directly from countries in response to the questionnaire; 75 countries responded, for a response rate of 36%. Among those who responded, 11 – mainly developing countries – indicated they had no data on film production. Data on 26 other countries were obtained from alternative sources (government information available on the Internet, international compilations, etc.). Figure 1 shows the geographical imbalance in coverage rates – a strong concentration in Europe and North America with a coverage rate of 88% and very little coverage in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Pacific with 33%, 27% and 24% respectively.

Cinema We extend our gratitude and appreciation to all the authors and consultants who made a valued contribution to this project by devoting their time and energy. A very special thank you to those artists and institutions who provided materials from their collections. Preface 9 Documentary Cinema: The Flowing River of Time 11 New Lithuanian Feature Films 19 Short Films 25 The Artistic and Stylistic Features of Lithuanian Animation 27 Catalogue 35 Organisations 79 Preface Over the last two decades, Lithuanian cinema has continued to attract international attention. The country’s film industry is regularly represented by the films of Šarūnas Bartas, Arūnas Matelis, Audrius Stonys, Gytis Lukšas and Kristijonas Vildžiūnas. New names are starting to appear alongside these recognised directors, such as Kristina Buožytė and Mantas Kvedaravičius, who have had successful premières at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. There is also a provocative new generation that is looking for roads that have yet to be travelled, such as Lina Lužytė, Dovilė Šarutytė and Jūratė Samulionytė, who highlight problems concerning the personal and social identity. The well-established tradition of auteur cinema in Lithuania is coming into contact with new stylistic and thematic trends, which we would like to present in this publication. Documentary Cinema: The Flowing River of Time By Živilė Pipinytė Obscure Beginnings Lithuanian cinema is one of the youngest in Europe. Professional national cinematography started relatively late, only in the mid-20th century. Its beginnings are to be found in the stories told by the early filmmakers. One of these legends marks the beginning of documentary cinema.
