FOLLOWING THE FOOTPRINTS OF COLONIAL BARCELONA Gustau Nerín It is hardly unusual to find people, even highly educated people, who claim Catalonia can analyse colonialism with sufficient objectivity given that it has never taken part in any colonial campaign and never been colonialist. Even though most historians do not subscribe to this view, it is certainly a common belief among ordinary people. Dissociating ourselves from colonialism is obviously a way of whitewashing our history and collective conscience. But Barcelona, like it or not, is a city that owes a considerable amount of its growth to its colonial experience. First, it is obvious that the whole of Europe was infected with colonial attitudes at the height of the colonial period, towards the end of the 19th century and first half of the 20th. Colonial beliefs were shared among the English, French, Portuguese and Belgians, as well as the Swedes, Swiss, Italians, Germans and Catalans. Colonialist culture was constantly being consumed in Barcelona as in the rest of Europe. People were reading Jules Verne’s and Emilio Salgari's novels, collecting money for the “poor coloured folk” at missions in China and Africa and raising their own children with the racist poems of Kipling. The film industry, that great propagator of colonial myths, inflamed passions in our city with Tarzan, Beau Geste and The Four Feathers. Barcelona’s citizens certainly shared this belief in European superiority and in the white man’s burden, with Parisians, Londoners and so many other Europeans. In fact, even the comic strip El Capitán Trueno, which was created by a communist Catalan, Víctor Mora, proved to be a perfect reflection of these colonial stereotypes. -

Gregory Palamas at the Council of Blachernae, 1351 Papadakis, Aristeides Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies; Winter 1969; 10, 4; ProQuest pg. 333 Gregory Palamas at the Council of Blachernae, 1351 Aristeides Papadakis HE STORY of the last centuries of Byzantium is one of shrinking Tfrontiers and inevitable disintegration, graphically illustrated by the disasters of Manzikert (1071) and Myriocephalon (1176). The final disaster of 1453 only marks the end of a story the outcome of which had long been determined. Curiously enough, however, these years of increasing decay, when Byzantium proved Ha marvel of tenacity,"1 were also years of extraordinary vitality in such areas as Byzantine theology and art. The profound puzzle of cultural energy amidst political inertia and exhaustion is best illustrated by hesychasm -a movement long organic to Byzantine spirituality, but which first gained momentum with its first eminent exponent, Gregory Palamas, theologian and monk of Mount Athos, and subsequent archbishop of Thessalonica. Happily, confusion and obSCUrity no longer shroud the personality and achievement of Gregory Palamas. Recent research has shown that Pal amite theology-the cause celebre that shook the fabric of Byzantine society in the 1340s-constitutes an organic continuation of the strong biblical and patristic tradition of the Byzantine Church. The theology of Palamas is in no wayan innovative or heretical deviation from orthodoxy (and therefore of marginal importance as some have thought).2 No one has contributed more to making Palamas accessible 1 Cf. Appearance of the Icon of the Mother of God “the Smolensk Directress†from Constantinople Commemorated on July 28 The Smolensk “Hodigitria†Icon of the Theotokos, or “She who leads the way,†was, according to Church Tradition, painted by the holy Evangelist Luke during the earthly life of the Most Holy Theotokos. Holy Hierarch Demetrius of Rostov suggests that this icon was written at the request of Theophilus, the prefect of Antioch. From Antioch, the holy image was transferred to Jerusalem. From there, Empress Eudokia, the wife of Emperor Arcadius, gave it to Pulcheria, the sister of the emperor, at Constantinople. Pulcheria put the holy icon in the Blachernae Church. In 1046, Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos gave his daughter, Anna, in marriage to Prince Vsevolod Yaroslavich, the son of Yaroslav the Wise. He used this icon to bless her on her journey. After the death of Prince Vsevolod, the icon was given to his son, Vladimir Monomachos, who transferred it at the beginning of the twelfth century to the Smolensk Cathedral in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos. From that time onwards, the icon was known as the Smolensk Hodigitria. In 1238, the Orthodox warrior Mercurius invaded the camp of Batu and killed many of the enemy. Having accepted a martyr’s death in battle, Mercurius was included by the Church in the ranks of the Saints. In the fourteenth century, Smolensk came into the possession of the Lithuanian princes. Sophia, the daughter of Prince Vitovt, was given in marriage to Moscow Great Prince Basil Dimitrievich. -

It draws attention to points of contention and highlights and rectifies those that have been overlooked or that have remained undisputed. “Chapter One: Queer Heterosexualities in the Tirant: Straight until Proven ‘Other’” addresses the issue of masculinities in the clergy, the chivalry, and the monarchy by mapping models of masculinity—conventional and competing—within a phallosocial context. And “Chapter Two: Bizarre Love Triangles in the Tirant: Consummation of Phallosocial Desire” traces phallosocial desire by analyzing the processes that lead to a symbolic consummation of same-sex relations by means of erotic triangles within a (mandatory) heterosexuality, where women become the (required) vessel by which phallosocial desire is reified and -

From the shrine of Cosmidion to the shrine of Eyup Ensari Ozaslan, Nuray Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies; Winter 1999; 40, 4; ProQuest pg. 379 From the Shrine of Cosmidion to the Shrine of Eyiip Ensari Nuray Ozaslan HE URBAN HISTORY of Constantinople, with a particular emphasis on the historical peninsula, has been a Tsignificant agenda of Byzantine studies. Despite the settlements spread outside the walls, the triangle-shaped and fortified core, bounded on two sides by water (the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara) and on the third by the Theodosian land walls, has shaped the image of the city. There has been a remarkable effort to explore its past, and hence a repository of information available in various sources and studies. In contrast, there has been limited attempt to investigate the historical, social, political, or architectural characteristics of its environs such as Sycea (Galata), Hebdomon (Baklrkoy), St. Mamas (Be~ikta~) and Cosmidion (Eyup). The small number of sources available on these surroundings underlines the indispens able need for further research, as well as excavations. Cosmidion holds a particular importance not only because of its significance for the urban history of Constantinople but also for its transformation into a Muslim shrine after the conquest of the city by the Ottomans in 1453. After the conquest, a massive rebuilding effort began to reshape the city both physically and symbolically. Thereby the image of Constantinople as a sacred city of Christianity was converted to an Islamic one. This was not limited to the physical appearance of the city alone, but also involved the reshaping of its urban space. -

July 2, 2017 – 4th Sunday After Pentecost | The Placing of the Honorable Robe of the Most Holy Mother of God at Blachernae During the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Leo the Great (457-474), the brothers Galbius and Candidus, associates of the emperor, set out from Constantinople to Palestine to venerate the holy places. In a small settlement near Nazareth they stayed in the home of a certain old Jewish woman. In her house they noticed a room where many lamps were lit, incense burned, and sick people were gathered. When they asked her what the room contained, the pious woman did not want to give an answer for a long time. After persistent requests, she said that she had a very precious sacred item: the Robe of the Mother of God, which performed many miracles and healings. Before Her Dormition the Most Holy Virgin bequeathed one of her garments to a pious Jewish maiden, an ancestor of the old woman, instructing her to leave it to another virgin after her death. Thus, the Robe of the Mother of God was preserved in this family from generation to generation. -
