Deposit guide Contact: email “What can’t be coded can be decorded” Reading Writing Performing Finnegans Wake Oliver Rory Thomas Evans Phd Thesis School of Arts, Birkbeck College, University of London (2016) 2 3 This thesis examines the ways in which performances of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake (1939) navigate the boundary between reading and writing. I consider the extent to which performances enact alternative readings of Finnegans Wake, challenging notions of competence and understanding; and by viewing performance as a form of writing I ask whether Joyce’s composition process can be remembered by its recomposition into new performances. These perspectives raise questions about authority and archivisation, and I argue that performances of Finnegans Wake challenge hierarchical and institutional forms of interpretation. By appropriating Joyce’s text through different methodologies of reading and writing I argue that these performances come into contact with a community of ghosts and traces which haunt its composition. In chapter one I argue that performance played an important role in the composition and early critical reception of Finnegans Wake and conduct an overview of various performances which challenge the notion of a ‘Joycean competence’ or encounter the text through radical recompositions of its material.

  • No. 22 How Did North Korean Dance Notation Make Its Way to South
School of Oriental and African Studies University of London SOAS-AKS Working Papers in Korean Studies No. 22 How did North Korean dance notation make its way to South Korea’s bastion of traditional arts, the National Gugak Center? Keith Howard http://www.soas.ac.uk/japankorea/research/soas-aks-papers/ How did North Korean dance notation make its way to South Korea’s bastion of traditional arts, the National Gugak Center? Keith Howard (SOAS, University of London) © 2012 In December 2009, the National Gugak Center published a notation for the dance for court sacrificial rites (aak ilmu). As the thirteenth volume in a series of dance notations begun back in 1988 this seems, at first glance, innocuous. The dance had been discussed in relation to the music and dance at the Rite to Confucius (Munmyo cheryeak) in the 1493 treatise, Akhak kwebŏm (Guide to the Study of Music), and had also, as part of Chongmyo cheryeak, been used in the Rite to Royal Ancestors. Revived in 1923 during the Japanese colonial period by members of the court music institute, then known as the Yiwangjik Aakpu (Yi Kings’ Court Music Institute), the memories and practice of former members of that institute ensured that the music and dance to both rites would be recognised as intangible cultural heritage within the post-liberation Republic of Korea (South Korea), with Chongymo cheryeak appointed Important Intangible Cultural Property (Chungyo muhyŏng munhwajae)1 1 in December 1964 and a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2001, and the entire Confucian rite (Sŏkchŏn taeje) as Intangible Cultural Property 85 in November 1986.2 In fact, the director general of the National Gugak Center, Pak Ilhun, in a preface to volume thirteen, notes how Sŏng Kyŏngnin (1911–2008), Kim Kisu (1917–1986) and others who had been members of the former institute, and who in the 1960s were appointed ‘holders’ (poyuja) for Intangible Cultural Property 1, taught the dance for sacrificial rites to students at the National Traditional Music High School in 1980.

  • The History and Revival of the Meråker Clarinet
MOT 2016 ombrukket 4.qxp_Layout 1 03.02.2017 15.49 Side 81 “I saw it on the telly” – The history and revival of the Meråker clarinet Bjørn Aksdal Introduction One of the most popular TV-programmes in Norway over the last 40 years has been the weekly magazine “Norge Rundt” (Around Norway).1 Each half-hour programme contains reports from different parts of Norway, made locally by the regional offices of NRK, the Norwegian state broad- casting company. In 1981, a report was presented from the parish of Meråker in the county of Nord-Trøndelag, where a 69-year old local fiddler by the name of Harald Gilland (1912–1992), played a whistle or flute-like instrument, which he had made himself. He called the instrument a “fløit” (flute, whistle), but it sounded more like a kind of home-made clarinet. When the instrument was pictured in close-up, it was possible to see that a single reed was fastened to the blown end (mouth-piece). This made me curious, because there was no information about any other corresponding instrument in living tradition in Norway. Shortly afterwards, I contacted Harald Gilland, and we arranged that I should come to Meråker a few days later and pay him a visit. The parish of Meråker has around 2900 inhabitants and is situated ca. 80 km northeast of Trondheim, close to the Swedish border and the county of Jamtlandia. Harald Gilland was born in a place called Stordalen in the 1. The first programme in this series was sent on October 2nd 1976.

  • Elettromagnetico 3 Pres It. Copia
