First-year coach Ernie McCook's team has relied heavily on freshman signal caller Tyson Bagent who has passed for 2,784 yards and 28 touchdowns in his first collegiate campaign. The Rams also have one of the league's top linebackers in sophomore Ponce DeLeon. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder has tallied five interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and six tackles for loss to go with his 53 tackles this season. In the backfield, Shepherd has seen Antwan Squire and Zyan Sturdivant split carries. Squire has gained 485 yards while averaging 5.7 yards a carry on 85 attempts while Sturdivant has posted 405 yards on 4.7 yards an attempt, both players have scored four rushing touchdowns.

UVa-Wise's defense has been among the best in the MEC and in NCAA Division II this fall. Entering Saturday, teams are passing for just 210.9 yards per game against the unit. Defensive coordinator Shap Boyd's crew has also tallied seven interceptions, 22 sacks and recovered seven fumbles in the first nine games.

Turnover margin has plagued UVa-Wise, the Cavs have turned the ball over 29 times this season and are a league worst -15 in turnover margin. Most recently, UVa-Wise forced a pair of turnovers against Notre Dame College but turned the ball over five times.

A win at Shepherd would give UVa-Wise its first win in six tries against the Rams while allowing the program to post three consecutive seasons of at least four wins for the first time since 2007-09 when the school was a member of the NAIA.

www.UvawiseCavs.com #GoCavsGo last week game recap WISE - - No. 13 Notre Dame College scored 19 fourth quarter points to overcome an 11-point deficit in the final 5:30 of play to knock off UVa-Wise 25-17 on Senior Day 2018 at Carl Smith Stadium.

UVa-Wise (3-6, 3-6 MEC) held a 17-6 lead after Tanner Bernard hooked up with Eli Marks on a 33-yard touchdown. Bernard and Marks executed a perfect pump-and-go route for Marks' first collegiate touchdown.

From there, Notre Dame (10-0, 10-0 MEC) kept its hope of a perfect season alive as Marvelle Ross capped a 4-play, 45- yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown reception off the arm of Chris Brimm to make it a 17-12 contest. The defensive duo of Buster Henderson and Dylan Giovine would stop the two-point conversion try to keep it a five point advan- tage.

On the following possession, the Cavaliers found themselves three yards from a first down on a third down play only to see the Falcons pull of a strip sack and recover the ball at the 15-yard line.

Two plays later, Brimm rushed in from 11 yards out to give the guests their first lead of the day. Again, the two point conversion failed, leaving Notre Dame with an 18-17 lead.

UVa-Wise took possession of the football with 2:57 to play on its own 10-yard line but would eventually turn the ball over on downs at its own 21-yard line.

Notre Dame seemingly put the game out of reach when Brian Walker raced 14 yards to the UVa-Wise 4-yard line only to see Marquis Hamilton strip the ball and recover it to give his team one final chance.

The chance quickly evaporated as a strip sack in the end zone was recovered by the Falcons to seal the victory.

The Cavs defense played well throughout the game as the unit held the Falcons scoreless for the first half as the hosts took a 7-0 lead to intermission.

In the second half, UVa-Wise forced a pair of fumbles as the defense finished with eight tackles for loss. Hamilton led the way as he posted a game-high 11 tackles to go with his forced fumble and fumble recovery. Senior Donavan Montague tallied six solo stops as part an stop day in his final home game at Carl Smith Stadium.

UVa-Wise built its lead to as high as 17-6 behind Marks' touchdown reception and an earlier 37-yard field goal by Trevor Owens.

Notre Dame was led by freshman tailback Jaleel McLaughlin who gained 117 yards on 32 carries, Brimm finished 16- for-33 through the air for 280 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cavs turned the ball over five times in the loss which led to 13 points for the Falcons.

www.UvawiseCavs.com #GoCavsGo last meeting vs shepherd game recap WISE - - No. 2 Shepherd University amassed 567 yards of total offense as quarterback Connor Jessop passed for 386 yards and four touchdowns in the Rams' 63-35 win over UVa-Wise at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday. The win improves Shepherd to 10-0 on the year and extends the program's winning streak to 30 inside the Mountain East Conference. Shepherd (10-0, 10-0 MEC) got on the board first as Jessop darted in from five yards out with 4:58 to play in the first quarter. Zach Wise booted the PAT to make the score 7-0 Rams. The visitors put two more touchdowns on the board in the early going of the second quarter as Jabre Lolley scored from five yards out before Jessop fired his first touchdown pass of the day, a 15-yard scoring strike to Wanya Allen. Wise made both extra points to make the score 21-0 with 11:29 to play in the half. Marquis Hamilton (Washington, D.C./Marshall University) would provide a spark for the Cavaliers (5-6, 5-5) as he fielded the ensuing kickoff and returned it to the Shepherd 22-yard line. Three plays later, Javonte Latney (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax H.S.) scored on a 2-yard run. Trevor Owens (Lebanon, Va./Middle Tennessee State) was good on the point after to make the score 21-7. Jessop would fire two more touchdown passes in the opening half, one each to Duron Norris and Ryan Feiss to send his club to intermission with a 35-7 lead. The Cavs would have their second big special teams play to begin the second half when Josh Saunders (Freeport, Bahamas/Lib- erty Christian) returned the opening kick of the second half 100 yards for a touchdown. Shepherd answered back with a Jessop-to-Allen 33-yard touchdown to push the lead to 42-14 with 12:55 to play in the third quarter. After consecutive non-scoring drives, UVa-Wise caught a break when a botched snap by Shepherd allowed the Cavs to fall on the ball at the Rams' 12-yard line. A play later, Jake Sturgill (Abingdon, Va./Abingdon H.S.) lofted a ball towards the end zone and junior Kaian Duverger (Greena- cres, Fla./Lackawanna J.C.) reached out with one hand to secure the touchdown. Owens' extra point made the score 42-21. The place kicker would then perfectly execute an onside kick attempt as Hamilton would field the ball near the sideline before stepping out of bounds. Shepherd would commit three penalties on the next drive before Duverger would make his second one handed touchdown grab of the day. This time the 6-foot-6 receiver would work his way around four Rams before coming down with the one handed grab. Following the PAT, UVa-Wise had cut the lead to 42-28. Jabre Lolley would cap an 11-play, 76-yard drive for Shepherd with his second score of the day, a 2-yard touchdown run. Wise's PAT pushed the Rams' lead back to 21 at 49-28. Sturgill would proceed to lead his team on another scoring drive as the Cavs marched 64 yards on eight plays before Devontae Jordan scored from two yards out. Following an unsuccessful onside kick attempt, Lolley scored from 44 yards out on the first play from scrimmage to quickly push the lead back to three scores. Chrys Lane provided the final points of the day for Shepherd when his pick-six went for 26 yards. Feiss finished with 12 catches for 173 yards while Allen added eight catches for 118 yards in the win. Kwadwo Diawuo (Alexandria, Va./Norfolk State) finished with a game-high 11 tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception to lead the UVa-Wise defense. Duverger caught five passes for 61 yards to go with his two touchdown receptions on a day when UVa-Wise honored 17 seniors prior to kickoff.
