In the backfield, senior Victor Mitchell and Von Purvis will join converted linebacker Jamorya Cousin in a position battle at tailback.On defense, all-conference linebacker Donavan Montague is back after posting team-high totals in sacks (8.5) and tackles for loss (16.5) as a junior. Junior Buster Henderson and senior Dylan Giovine are slated to start at the other linebacker positions as camp opens. On the defensive line, senior Chris Whitealong with Bryce Harty and Davon Clayton will be joined by Rondre Knowles-Tener and DiAndre Stubbs as players in the mix for playing time. The secondary is experienced with Marcus Tarrer, Steven Hill, Josh Saunders, Marquise Hamilton and Demetrius Mann all back after extensive playing time in 2017. Trevor Owens is slated to handle punting and place kicking duties while Hamilton is back as one of the nation's top returners. A year ago, he averaged 37.1 yards per return while having two kickoff return touchdowns. As a group, the Cavaliers led the league and ranked 10th nationally with a 34.1 yards per return average. In addition to 2018 being UVa-Wise's final season in the MEC, it will mark the first time the program has played 10 games since 2002. The Cavaliers have played 11 straight weeks without the benefit of an open week for the last 15 seasons.
