West Virginia State faced an opposite dilemma in its season opener. The Yellow Jackets posted 496 yards of total offense, including 217 on the ground but, allowed 580 yards in a 35-31 loss to the University of Charleston.

Calil Wilkins gained 138 yards on 25 carries while posting two rushing touchdowns against the Golden Eagles. Quarterback Austin Hensley passed for 260 yards while completing 22-of-34 pass attempts before the West Virginia University transfer was injured and replaced by Faustino Saucedo.

Saucedo, a 6-foot-2 graduate student who started his career at Pace University will be making his first career start for the Yellow Jackets after attempting just one pass in the season opener.

An area to watch is the red zone, West Virginia State led all of NCAA Division II by scoring on 47 of 48 trips last fall and begin 2018 by reaching the area five times with three scores in the opener.

West Virginia State was susceptible to the big play on defense as Charleston passed for 303 yards on just 10 completions. The Golden Eagles started the game with a 59-yard touchdown pass on the team's opening play from scrimmage, it was one of 12 plays that went for at least 20 yards against the Yellow Jackets.

The loser of Saturday's game will face an uphill climb in the Mountain East Conference standings. UVa-Wise will play three of its next four games against schools that won their season opener while West Virginia State has a road tilt at Notre Dame College (who upset Shepherd last week) before returning home to face preseason favorite Shepherd on Sept. 22.

www.UvawiseCavs.com #GoCavsGo last week game recap WISE - -Despite limiting Glenville State to 222 yards of total offense, UVa-Wise dropped its season opener 17-7 at Carl Smith Stadium Thursday night. The game was delayed 1-hour, 26-minutes by lightning and featured 18 penalties for 179 yards.

Glenville State (1-0, 1-0 MEC) broke a scoreless game with 3:12 to go in the first half when Tre Cutcher hauled in a 27- yard touchdown pass from Jaylen McNair.

Two plays later, the Pioneers pushed their lead to two scores when UVa-Wise (0-1, 0-1 MEC) quarterback Brycen Lee fired a pass backwards only to see it skip off the turf and be recovered and returned for a 14-yard touchdown by D'Andre Brown.

The lightening then sat in and delayed the contest for nearly 90 minutes before play resumed.

On the following possession, UVa-Wise moved the ball to near mid-field before the drive stalled, sending the game to an abbreviated halftime.

The two defenses would trade blows in the third quarter before the Cavaliers dented the scoreboard on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Lee delivered a 55-yard touchdown pass to Kaian Duverger and following a Trevor Owens conversion kick the score was 14-7.

UVa-Wise's defense would provide its offense with plenty of opportunities to tie the game up. After the touchdown, the Cavs forced a three-and-out. On the next offensive possession, UVa-Wise perfectly executed a reverse only to see the play brought back by a chop block.

After punting, the UVa-Wise defense returned to the field and after allowing Glenville State to advance to the Cavs' 29-yard line; the unit stepped up again and held the visitors on a fourth down play to give the offense the ball back.

On the first play from scrimmage, the Cavs turned the ball over; it was the third turnover of the game for UVa-Wise.

Glenville State took over on the UVa-Wise 36-yard line and after moving just five yards in three plays, Head Coach Eric Smith elected to try a 48-yard field goal. Justin Watts was good on the attempt to provide the winning margin of 17- 7.

Marcus Tarrer posted a career-high 16 tackles while Chris White added nine in defeat. Duverger hauled in six recep- tions for 112 yards to go with his 55 yard touchdown reception. Jamorya Cousin ran the ball 14 times for 60 yards in his first collegiate game at tailback. Dez Hopkins recorded an interception on defense for the hosts.

Glenville State was led by middle linebacker Dom Cizauskas who posted a game-high 19 tackles in his first game as a Pioneer. Cizauskas was one of two transfers who had a big night for the guests as former Florida State Seminole Mario Pender led all players with 124 rushing yards on 25 attempts.

UVa-Wise was penalized 11 times for 114 yards in the loss while converting just 5-of-16 third down conversions and failing to make a fourth down attempt in two tries. The Cavs' offense failed to make the red zone in the loss.

The Pioneers posted the win despite an 8-for-20 showing in the passing game while throwing for just 61 yards.

www.UvawiseCavs.com #GoCavsGo last meeting vs west virginia state game recap WISE - - Senior Javonte Latney scored on a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 21 seconds to play as UVa-Wise upended West Virginia State 34-24 in the Cavaliers' home opener at Carl Smith Stadium Thursday. Latney's put-away score put an exclamation mark on junior linebacker Donavan Montague's career night as he finished with two interceptions and a fumble recovery in the triumph. West Virginia State (1-1, 1-1 MEC) jumped out to an early lead as Calil Wilkins raced 54 yards for the first score of the game. Aaron Ball's PAT split the uprights to give the visitors a 7-0 lead with 13:46 to play in the opening quarter. With 5:49 to play in the first play quarter, Montague (Altavista, Va./Altavista H.S.) began his big night as the UVa-Wise (2-0, 2-0 MEC) linebacker intercepted a Matt Kinnick pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown. The conversion kick by Daryian Basco (Suwanee, Ga./St. Francis H.S.) knotted the game at 7-7. Montague would continue to assert himself on the Yellow Jackets ensuing possession. Kinnick would complete a pass to Zach Pate down to the Cavs' 10-yard line only to see Montague recover a fumble and return it 42 yards. Senior Carlton Griffith (Ft. Belvoir, Va./Mt. Vernon H.S.) would give UVa-Wise the lead when he capped a 4-play, 32- yard scoring drive with a 3-yard touchdown scamper. Following Basco's extra point, the Cavs had a 14-7 lead. The score would remain unchanged until the final minutes of the first half as the Yellow Jackets' Dionta Brown capped a 6-play, 81-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown catch. Following a PAT by Ball, the game was again tied. UVa-Wise quickly answered as redshirt sophomore Brycen Lee (Mayo, Fla./Eastern Kentucky University) went a per- fect 3-3 on a scoring drive that was finished off with a 38-yard touchdown pass to James Cousins. Basco's extra point would send Dane Damron's team to intermission up 21-14. After the Cavs would be forced to punt on their opening possession of the second half, West Virginia State took over on its own 10-yard line. Kinnick would direct his team's most impressive drive of the game as the Yellow Jackets put together a 13-play, 90-yard drive that consumed 7:17 of game clock to again tie the game. Kinnick finished the drive with an 18-yard scoring strike to Quinton Gray. The momentum for West Virginia State was short lived as junior Darius Jones (Hampton, Va./Phoebus H.S.) returned the ensuing kickoff 44 yards to near midfield. A play later, Griffith rushed 38 yards to the Yellow Jackets' 15-yard line. Two plays later, Lee found junior Kaian Duverger (Greenacres, Fla./Lackawanna J.C.) on a fade pattern in the corner of the end zone to put the Cavs back in front. The extra point sailed wide left leaving the score 27-21. UVa-Wise would have a chance to go in front by two possessions but Lee would be picked off by Kyle Alexander in the end zone. With 13:43 to play in the game. Kinnick would once more march his team down the field as the quarterback and Wilkins opened the drive with six consecutive rushes to get the ball to the Yellow Jackets' 49-yard line. After a 22-yard completion to Gray, West Vir- ginia State moved the ball inside the 10-yard line on a personal foul against UVa-Wise. The guests appeared to have taken the lead but a Kinnick pass was ruled to be caught out of bounds on third and goal forcing a field goal attempt. Ball would boot a 24-yard field goal to make the score 27-24 in favor of UVa-Wise. West Virginia State would force a UVa-Wise punt only to see Montague come up big one more time. The former Alta- vista Colonel picked off a Kinnick pass to give his team the ball inside the Yellow Jackets' 20-yard line. UVa-Wise would milk the clock down before Latney (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponox H.S.) scored what proved to be the game securing touchdown with under 30 seconds to play. The Yellow Jackets tallied 477 offensive yards in the loss but were doomed by four turnovers. Wilkins finished with one of the greatest individual performances in school history as he finished with 201 rushing yards. Lee passed for 251 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Duverger hauled in four catches for 52 yards in addition to his touchdown reception. Defensive back Ed Kargbo (Springfield, Va./South Co. H.S.) led all players with 14 tackles while Dylan Giovine (Staunton, Va./R.E. Lee Staunton H.S.) registered 10 tackles and a sack. With the win, UVa-Wise is 2-0 for the first time since 2008.
