Southwest Virginia's Team www.UvawiseCavs.com Last Meeting vs. Charleston Recap WISE - - UVa-Wise committed a school record eight turnovers as No. 16 University of Charleston posted a 59-7 Mountain East Conference win Thursday. The win assures Charleston its first NCAA Division II playoff berth in program history while the loss con- cludes the worst season in UVa-Wise history; the Cavaliers finished with a school-low one victory. Charleston (10-1, 9-1 MEC) dominated the contest from the onset. The Golden Eagles took the opening kickoff and scored on the third play from scrimmage. Following a 54-yard pass from Jeremy Johnson to Joey Augustin, Johnson scored on a 6-yard quarter- back keeper to give the visitors a 6-0 lead they would not relinquish. Bret Benes' PAT was good, leaving the score 7-0. Following a 30-yard field goal by Benes, UVa-Wise (1-10, 1-9 MEC) had its strongest drive of the day, trailing 10-0. After eight con- secutive rushes moved the ball from the Cavaliers' 21-yard to the Golden Eagles' 9-yard line, Daniel Lewis first pass of the drive was intercepted and returned to the Charleston 14-yard line. The interception was the first of six thrown by Lewis and Max Rodgers. Charleston finished the first half by scoring 28 points in the second quarter to take a 38-0 lead to intermission. Jermaine Kelly had a pair of touchdown runs in the quarter while Johnathan Pruden had a 34-yard interception return and D'Andre Brooks caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Johnson. Things got worse for UVa-Wise in the third quarter, Tevion Cappe scored on a 4-yard touchdown run before Kane Roush scored from 22 yards out. Benes was perfect on the PAT attempts extending the lead to 52-0. The Cavaliers scored their lone touchdown of the game when Tyquan Weston scooped up a fumble and raced 36-yards for the touchdown. Trent Martin's PAT made the score 52-7 with 4:22 to play in the third period. Kelly's third touchdown run of the day came with 11:34 to play in the contest, Benes' final extra point left the final margin of 59-7. Zachary Blair recorded 12 stops, including two behind the line of scrimmage. His two tackles for loss gave him 28.5 on the season, a new single-season school record at UVa-Wise. The Cavs' Timmy Meador posted a game-high 14 stops. Max Rodgers received the most extensive playing time of his young career as he passed for 127 yards and ran for 71 more. Both are career-highs for the former Grayson County standout. As a team, UVa-Wise hit on just 12 of 43 pass attempts while Charleston tallied 416 yards of total offense.

www.UvawiseCavs.com Southwest Virginia's Team Last Week's Game Recap WISE - - Michael Anderson rushed for 193 yards and three touchdowns as part of a day that saw the senior amass 237 all-purpose yards in West Virginia Wesleyan's 35-10 win over UVa-Wise at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday. Anderson's big day helped propel the Bobcats to their second consecutive victory and the program's fourth consecutive win over the Cavaliers.

West Virginia Wesleyan (4-6, 4-5 MEC) scored 35 unanswered points in the come from behind win as the guests out gained the hosts 228 to 99 over the final three periods.

UVa-Wise (6-4, 5-4 MEC) jumped out to an early 10-0 lead as Dane Damron's team took the opening kick and moved 58 yards to the West Virginia Wesleyan 4-yard line before being forced to attempt a field goal. Senior Trent Martin connected on the 21-yard boot to give the Cavs a 3-0 lead.

An interception by senior Tevin McCleave would set UVa-Wise back up in good field position at the Wesleyan 49-yard line. Mc- Cleave's pick would lead to a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jeremy Eubank to James Cousins. Following Martin's conversion kick, the Cavs led by two scores with 5:34 to play in the opening period.

The Cavs appeared to be on the cusp of going up 17-0 when the Bobcats Nate Simmons picked off a pass at the 2-yard line. Sim- mons' INT would turn the momentum for the remainder of the game.

Anderson hauled in a 4-yard TD pass from Ryan Deal to cap a 12-play 98-yard drive to get Wesleyan on the board. Tyler Fischer's point after attempt was good to make the score 10-7.

On Wesleyan's next offensive possession, UVa-Wise senior linebacker Zachary Blair would enter the record book when he stopped Raymond Myers for a six yard loss. It marked Blair's 77.5 tackle for loss in his career, a new NCAA Division II record.

The Bobcats would take the lead for good with 55 seconds to play in the opening half when Marcus Smith caught a 47-yard TD pass from Deal on a fourth down play. Following Fischer's extra point, Wesleyan led 14-10.

A trio of touchdown runs by Anderson in the second half would provide the winning margin of 35-10.

Prior to the game, UVa-Wise honored senior members of the football team. With six wins this season, the group has helped propel the program to its first winning season since 2008.

Including three interceptions, UVa-Wise forced four turnovers in the loss. Ed Kargbo and Latony Davis joined McCleave in the INT column.

Alvin Enahoro led the Cavs with nine tackles, including 3.5 TFLs while Will Clift added five solo stops in defeat.

Brandon Grayson led the Bobcats with 10 stops. Simmons, Trey Lee and Tavaris Anderson each had an INT in the win.

The 2008 season football coach in school marked the first-ever varsity football team in Kentucky history in December of Christian history. 2015. Later, he moved on to Lake Gibson High School in Lakeland where the school reached previously unchartered waters on the football field. The Braves won their first playoff game in school history and ad- vanced to the regional finals in each of Damron’s last two seasons as head coach. Following his time in Florida, the coach returned to his native state of Kentucky to become the head coach at Boyd County High School in Ashland, Kentucky.
