I first conceptualized the project last spring as a traditional academic thesis that would cover popular culture’s fascination with murder ballads through lenses I discovered in my Honor Scholar classes like human evolution and religion. This summer, I realized I wanted to reach a general audience with the project and that I wanted to work in public musicology as a career. My 2019 play Somber and Wild interested an audience outside the School of Music and even outside of DePauw, so I felt confident that a play could attract the audience I wanted to entertain and educate. When fall came, it was clear that a play would suit my artistic and career goals better than a traditional paper. “Down in the Willow Garden” from Mike Block’s album Final Night at Camp was the first murder ballad that I ever noticed.

  • Conflicting Images of Land, People, and Nature of Native Americans and Euro-Americans Robert H
This Land Is Your Land, This Land Is My Land: Conflicting Images of Land, People, and Nature of Native Americans and Euro-Americans Robert H. Craig Abstract This paper explores varying dimensions of an enduring conflict between people of European origin and indigenous communities over land and land related issues. This means not only wrestling with differing understandings of land and natural world, especially as a visual landscape, but what we might learn from indigenous people that can lead to the creation of a common future that enhances both human and nonhuman life. Illustrative of some of the issues at the heart of white-Indian misunderstanding is a case-study of the conflict between Euro-Americans and the Lakota people over the Black Hills of South Dakota. The closing section of this paper concludes with an examination of the work of Wendell Berry and the myriad ways he can facilitate a needed dialogue between whites and Indians. 1. Introduction The title of this paper comes from a familiar American song composed by Woody Guthrie. The ballad was the theme song for George McGovern’s ill-fated 1972 presidential campaign and has been popularized by everyone from Pete Seeger and Peter, Paul, and Mary to United Airlines and the Ford Motor Company (Klein 1980:433). For many people this song is a romantic celebration of America that is embodied in refrains such as “from California to the New York Island, from the Redwood Forests, to the Gulf Stream waters, this land was made for you and me.” (Woody Guthrie Pages: 1).

This Land Is Your Land © Jake Schlapfer A Mission to Preserve You have inherited vast treasures. Some of these are close at hand, and others are located at the far corners of the country. These treasures are a link to your past and a legacy to leave for the future. Every fellow citizen shares them. These treasures are your national parks—all 392 sites. They are gifts from earlier generations, set aside not for a privileged few, but for all Americans to enjoy. These varied lands hold stories that tell the tale of our nation’s development and how we have evolved. Our national parks are part of a legacy that you, too, will pass on to future generations. Two groups are among those that can help you do this: the National Park Service and the National Parks Conservation Association. The National Park Service (NPS) www.nps.gov is a government agency established in 1916 that operates under the Department of the Interior. Its purpose is to protect and preserve our National Park System. The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) www.npca.org is an independent voice outside of government. Established in 1919, NPCA works to protect and enhance America’s national parks for current and future generations. Melissa Blair, NPCA Alaska Field Representative, with a wild silver salmon. As you can see, the two organizations have similar missions. “The mission of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) is to conserve the scenery, the natural and historic objects, and the wildlife in the United States’ national parks, and to provide for the public’s enjoyment of these features in a manner that will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” Ponder the Parks: National Parks Conservation Association’s (NPCA) mission is “To protect and enhance America’s National Park System 1.

The Banks of Ohio 3:32 Chorus: I asked my love to take a walk, I took her by her lily-white hand, Just to walk a little way, I led her down where the waters stand. And as we walked and as we talked I picked her up and pitched her in, Of our golden wedding day. And watched her as she floated down. Chorus: Chorus: Then only say that you'll be mine, In no other arms you'll find. I started back home twixt twelve and one, Down beside where the waters flow, Crying, "My God! What have I done - On the banks of the Ohio. I've murdered the only woman I love Because she would not be my bride." I drew a sword across her breast, Gently in my arms she pressed, Chorus: Crying, "Willie, Oh Willie, don't you murder me, For I'm unprepared for eternity!" www.folkways.si.edu 2. • Apartheid Revolutionary Poem-Songs. the Cases of Roger Lucey and Mzwakhe Mbuli
Corso di Laurea magistrale (ordinamento ex D.M. 270/2004) in Lingue e Letterature Europee, Americane e Postcoloniali Apartheid Revolutionary Poem-Songs. The Cases of Roger Lucey and Mzwakhe Mbuli Relatore Ch. Prof. Marco Fazzini Correlatore Ch. Prof. Alessandro Scarsella Laureanda Irene Pozzobon Matricola 828267 Anno Accademico 2013 / 2014 ABSTRACT When a system of segregation tries to oppress individuals and peoples, struggle becomes an important part in order to have social and civil rights back. Revolutionary poem-songs are to be considered as part of that struggle. This dissertation aims at offering an overview on how South African poet-songwriters, in particular the white Roger Lucey and the black Mzwakhe Mbuli, composed poem-songs to fight against apartheid. A secondary purpose of this study is to show how, despite the different ethnicities of these poet-songwriters, similar themes are to be found in their literary works. In order to investigate this topic deeply, an interview with Roger Lucey was recorded and transcribed in September 2014. This work will first take into consideration poem-songs as part of a broader topic called ‘oral literature’. Secondly, it will focus on what revolutionary poem-songs are and it will report examples of poem-songs from the South African apartheid regime (1950s to 1990s). Its third part will explore both the personal and musical background of the two songwriters. Part four, then, will thematically analyse Roger Lucey and Mzwakhe Mbuli’s lyrics composed in that particular moment of history. Finally, an epilogue will show how the two songwriters’ perspectives have evolved in the post-apartheid era.
