FIRST GRADE SOCIAL SCIENCE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS & BENCHMARKS STUDENTS COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE ABSOLUTE AND RELATIVE LOCATIONS OF PLACES AND PEOPLE AND DESCRIBE THE PHYSICAL AND/OR HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS OF PLACES. First Trimester: Benchmarks Locate and identify California, United States of America on map. Compare maps and globes including cardinal directions. Describe affects of location, weather and physical environment on food, clothing, shelter, transportation and recreation in California and United States. Second Trimester: Benchmarks Locate local community on a map. Use map symbols including cardinal directions. Describe and discuss affects of location, weather and physical environment on food, clothing, shelter, transportation and recreation of local community. Third Trimester: Benchmarks Construct a simple map. Locate and identify the seven continents and four oceans. Understand affects of location, weather and physical environment on food, clothing, shelter, transportation and recreation on the world. March 15, 2004 1 STUDENTS KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THE SYMBOLS, ICONS, AND TRADITIONS OF THE UNITED STATES THAT PROVIDE CONTINUITY AND A SENSE OF COMMUNITY. First Trimester: Benchmarks Recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Sing one patriotic song (America The Beautiful, National Anthem, This Land is Your Land, etc.). Recognize the American flag, bald eagle, and Statue of Liberty. Demonstrate knowledge of national holidays that fall within the first trimester (Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, etc.). Second Trimester: Benchmarks Sing two patriotic songs (America The Beautiful, National Anthem, This Land is Your Land, etc.). Identify and name the American flag, bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, and the White House. Demonstrate knowledge of national holidays that fall within the second trimester (Thanksgiving, Veteran’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, etc.). Third Trimester: Benchmarks Understand the significance of American ideals through songs and poems. Identify and name the American flag, bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, White House, and name of the current president. Demonstrate knowledge of national holidays that fall within the third trimester (Memorial Day, etc.). STUDENTS COMPARE AND CONTRAST EVERYDAY LIFE IN DIFFERENT TIMES (PAST AND PRESENT) AND PLACES AROUND THE WORLD. First Trimester: Benchmarks Understand the ways in which they are all part of the same community. Second Trimester: Benchmarks Identify and understand the similarities and differences between present and past communities (including different cultures). Third Trimester: Benchmarks Compare and contrast the benefits and challenges of a diverse population. DEVELOPMENT OF PERSONAL AND CITIZENSHIP SKILLS Respectful to people and property. Shows interest in learning. Prepared and organized. Completes documents/assignments when due.
