Super Scheibe !!!! Running head: NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 1 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Renée Barbosa Moura Master‟s thesis Digital Culture University of Jyväskylä Department of Art and Culture Studies Jyväskylä 2014 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 2 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ Faculty Department Humanities Art and Culture Studies Author Renée Barbosa Moura Title National Imagery in FFM: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Subject Level Digital Culture MA Thesis Month and year Number of pages June 2014 90 pages Abstract Folk metal is a music genre originated from heavy metal music. For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness.

  • Exploring the Chinese Metal Scene in Contemporary Chinese Society (1996-2015)
"THE SCREAMING SUCCESSOR": EXPLORING THE CHINESE METAL SCENE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SOCIETY (1996-2015) Yu Zheng A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2016 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2016 Yu Zheng All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This research project explores the characteristics and the trajectory of metal development in China and examines how various factors have influenced the localization of this music scene. I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. And, this localized trajectory is influenced by the accessibility of metal resources, the rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the progress of modernization in China, and the overall development of cultural industry and international cultural communication. iv For Yisheng and our unborn baby! v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First of all, I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr.

Music is an art that often defines the education and values of peo- ple. Extreme Metal is a controversial musical genre that at times, in some of its subgenres, has caused episodes of exceptional violence. Metalheads make up a cultural movement that is present on all conti- nents. Metal movements are difficult to dissolve in the magma of social acceptance: they create a consciousness of transnational solidarity, of response to waste and ostentation that destroys the planet, while claim- ing the place in which it is lived. Extreme Metal is not an artistic fashion, it is profoundly changing the mentality of many young people who reject the social organisation of the capitalist and Christian world and try to find alternatives for the future. In this article we ask how their convic- tions are formed and in what way the school’s teachings influence them. One of the ways of studying the phenomenon is by analysing the lyrics of the songs. Not all subgenres can be covered and three Melodic Death Metal bands from Finland have been chosen for study, especially in rela- tion to their feelings about nature and the cosmos. It is evident that their songs are often based on classical and popular poems learned at school, by the legacy left by the great Finnish poets, and even by the literary cre- ations of musicians for that school resonance.

www.soundmagnet.eu Markus A., Redaktion Attached you find the original Interview before the translation from english to german between Markus for Soundmagnet.eu and Sami Hinkka from Ensiferum. Markus A. (Soundmagnet): Thalassic is a loose concept album, all songs are about the sea and, in general, about water. How did you come up with this concept and what fascinates you so much about it? Sami Hinkka (Ensiferum): That's true that this time we had a theme for an album. I was listening to the raw demos we had on my long walks and because Helsinki is by the sea, I often found myself on the seashore and I guess that inspired with the theme. Sea and water are present in all mythologies around the world and it's the cradle of life so it felt like a perfect theme. Different stories, myths and fairy tales are treated. How was the selection made and why did exactly those stories end up on the album? There obviously was a problem because there were just too many interesting topics. As the songs progressed we could see much better the mood of each song so then it was quite easy to find the right topic for each song. I picked out two songs with nordic backgrounds. In Austria people don't know Sampo and Midsummer is for many people just a term from the IKEA commercials. Please explain to us what "The Defence of the Sampo" and "Midsummer Magic" are all about. True, those songs are quite Finnish plus "The Cold Northland" is based on Kalevala, our national epic.

  • Viking, Pagan Or Folk? Distinguishing Possibilities for Metal Sub-Genres
ČLANCI ALEXANDER HOFMANN VIKING, PAGAN OR FOLK? DISTINGUISHING POSSIBILITIES FOR METAL SUB-GENRES Izvorni znanstveni članak / Original Scholarly Paper UDK: 78.036 "19/20" aBStraCt The different sub-genres of metal music, which have formed in the last decades, are not only of interest due to their diverse and unique characteristics, but also evidence a variety in metal music whereby its clichéd black and gloomy world gains a bit of color. This multitude of sub-genres will inevitably lead to musicians, fans and even researchers no longer being able to differentiate between the genres. With Viking, pagan, and folk metal, this interesting process of fusion is already taking place, although it is possible to distinguish Viking and pagan at least from folk metal. Keywords: instrumentation, metal sub-genres, musical analysis, popular music introDuCtion During the last few decades many different metal sub-genres have developed, from the classic, and especially from the extreme, metal genre. Comprising bands such as Ensiferum, Finntroll, Korpiklaani and Turisas – surprisingly only Finnish bands – so-called folk metal is one of these sub-genres, which became part of the metal mainstream during the 2000s.1 For Spracklen the popularity of Finnish folk metal is based on commercialization, while other possible reasons could be the national distinction from Norwegian black and Swedish death metal, or, at least in Finland, a phase of increased inclusion of folk elements in popular music. “The combination of a nationally institutionalized folk tradition and the transnational genre of […] metal”2 is also mentioned by Neilson as a reason for the success of Finnish folk metal.
