Power has a trophy case that is only growing by the year, as he was named 2020’s USHL Defenseman of the Year when he led all USHL defensemen in scoring for the Chicago Steel and in 2021 was named to the NCAA’s All-Rookie Team as well as being named a Second Team All-Star, all of which displays the pedigree and resume he has built throughout his junior and college career . The attribute that sets Power apart in this class is his identity as a complete multi-tool defenseman with plenty of room to grow to reach his potential ceiling . Power has the frame of a stereotypical physical defenseman, but thinks the game from an offensive frame of mind as he’s consistently looking to transition pucks through the neutral zone with great mobility for a player his size and deft puck skills . In the offensive zone, Power is consistently looking for opportunities to join the attack and create offense, while more often than not displaying smarts that prevent ill-advised pinches and turnovers . Power could stand to get more aggressive and consistent in his defending, but has all the makings of a complete two-way defenseman .

The youngest brother of Jack and Quinn, Luke is the third Hughes brother to come through the draft since 2018 and will follow his oldest brothers footsteps by headed to the University of Michigan this upcoming fall . A critical part of this year’s U S. . National U18 Team, Hughes paced the team’s defense scoring in scoring with 34 points in 38 games, displaying a blossoming offensive touch to go with his elite transition game . What makes Luke Hughes special is his raw ability as a skater and transporter of the puck . Though Luke is not as dynamically skilled as his older brothers, he shares the patented Hughes trait of fantastic skating posture and mechanics . Luke is as smooth a skater as you’ll ever see, able to make quick turns and pivots on his skates to create separation from checkers and find lanes to transition the puck when it’s on his stick . Luke does a very good job of dictating the flow of play from the offensive blue line, able to walk the line with ease and facilitate offensive zone possession with strong passing ability . Luke will need to get more consistent in his defensive zone reads, but owns sky high potential .

Skating as USA’s second line center at the World Junior Championships, Beniers added a Gold Medal to his trophy case and was a constant possession-driving force throughout the tournament . Beniers is an absolute treat to watch because of how intelligent he is in all areas of the game and is bound to be a coach’s delight at the NHL level because of that . Beniers is the definition of a 200-foot player, as he’s consistently committed to play in his defensive zone by supporting his defensemen and has the mobility and skill to transition the puck with ease . Beniers is a zone entry wizard, able to weave through neutral zone coverage with ease . Beniers also displays excellent puck distribution skills in the offensive zone, able to find teammates with fantastic vision and puck manipulation .

A Bronze Medal winner for Sweden at the 2020 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, Eklund appears poised to become a fixture at the international level for Sweden for years to come . What makes Eklund such a dangerous offensive weapon is the marriage he brings between skill and sense on a nightly basis . Eklund is a crafty puck handler who can beat defenders one-on-one and open up space in the offensive zone with creative dekes and quick turns on his edges . Eklund does a fantastic job of reading defensive zone coverage and identifying attacking lanes, showing a willingness to drive high-danger areas of the ice despite having a slight size deficit at just 5’10” . Eklund’s primary strength in the offensive zone is in his playmaking tool kit, showing great vision with the puck on his stick and good puck distribution skills, but is a true dual-threat attacker due to a quick shot release and ability to find his way into open areas of ice .

The fourth overall pick in the 2019 OHL Draft, Clarke has received accolades and been apart of championship teams throughout his young hockey career, winning the GTHL Championship and OHL Cup with the Don Mills Flyers in 2019, being named to the OHL’s First All-Rookie Team in 2020, and a Gold Medal with Canada at the 2021 U18 World Championships where he was named to the tournament’s All-Star team . Clarke is the most naturally gifted offensive mind from the blue line available in this year’s draft, as it’s his smarts that allow him to break down coverage and find attacking lanes in the offensive zone . Clarke is an excellent facilitator of offense due to his ability to deliver pucks with precision to teammates and is a gifted powerplay quarterback due to those traits . The marquee aspect of his offensive game is his passing ability, but ability as a puck handler and shooter also add a level of dynamism to his offensive game . Though Clarke still has room for improvement in his consistency in his defensive game, he has plenty of room to grow into a well-rounded two-way, offensive-leaning defenseman .

McTavish spent his time with EHC Olten where he put up nine goals and 11 points in 13 pro games before winning Gold and finishing top five in scoring at the 2021 U18’s for Team Canada with 11 points in five games played . McTavish is able to make up for a lack of dynamic skill and pace in his game due to how intelligent he is in all facets of the game . McTavish is constantly aware of his surroundings when he’s on the ice, whether it be reading defensive coverage to find soft pockets of ice to make himself available for scoring chances, delivering area passes to teammates to open space in the offensive zone, or supporting his defensemen in his own defensive zone to aid in retrieval of the puck . McTavish’s shot is heavy and accurate, but is highlighted by a quick and powerful release that allows him to score from most areas of the offensive zone . On the radar of the scouting world for a very long time, Wallstedt has been a regular at nearly every international junior tournament for Sweden in recent, making appearances at the U17’s, two Hlinka Gretzky Cups, this past year’s U20 World Junior Championships, and the 2019 U18 World Championships, where he played a role in Sweden’s Gold Medal run . After a stellar junior career in Sweden’s J20 Nationell, Wallstedt officially turned pro this year for Luleå HF and proved himself while playing against men with a 2 .23 goals against average and a 908. save percentage in 22 appearances for the club . Wallstedt finds success in the crease due to his ability to play smart, positional goaltending and give himself a chance on nearly every shot . There are no wasted movements in Wallstedt’s game as he moves efficiently and plays his angles incredibly well, using his 6’3” frame to his advantage to take away shooting options from opponents . Wallstedt reads and anticipates play in his own zone incredibly well which puts him in position to make difficult stops . Wallstedt could work on his rebound control, but projects as an elite #1 goaltender .

Guenther was named the 2020 WHL Rookie of the Year after an over point-per-game campaign of 26 goals and 59 points in 58 games played . In Guenther’s abbreviated sophomore season, he was the only WHL player to produce at a 2 00. points-per-game pace with 24 points in 12 games, 12 of which were goals . Guenther’s game is defined by how he combines an elite-level shot with fantastic hockey sense and a high motor . Guenther has great shooting posture, able to shoot off both feet and load his stick to generate power all the way through his release, while also more often than not displaying good accuracy and can pick corners when given time to shoot . Guenther does a great job of fighting for dirty areas of the offensive zone, driving high danger areas to clean up scrambles at the net mouth and score from in tight and shows great awareness to find soft pockets of ice to make himself available for teammates . Guenther’s playmaking and skill can be basic at times, but is capable of making flashy plays .

During the 2019-2020 season, Johnson led the BCHL in both goals (41) and total points (101) during his 52 game campaign, clinching the Vern Dye Trophy as the league’s Most Valuable Player . After producing at a point-per- game clip in his freshman season, Johnson was rewarded with All-Rookie honors and will look to continue his development at Michigan in the coming years . The hallmark of Johnson’s game is his elite puck skills and how he is able to manipulate defenses in order to open up space in the offensive zone . Johnson possesses excellent one-on-one intelligence, able to use strong deception to create holes for him to attack through with his puck skills and excellent puck control, capable of making things happen out of nowhere to score flashy goals . Though Johnson is not the fastest, his edgework can be quite good at times, allowing him to make quick cuts to gain space in the offensive zone . Primarily a playmaker, but owns a quick release on his shot as well .

A growing star in the Swedish junior ranks, Lysell was able to find pro playing time in the SHL after transferring from Frölunda HC to Luleå HF mid-season, becoming one of only eight U18 players to record a point in the SHL this season . In international play, Lysell has become a go-to contributor at both the U17 and U18 levels, highlighted by his performance at the 2021 U18 World Championships where he led Sweden in scoring with three goals and nine points in seven games en route to clinching a Bronze Medal . What has made Lysell such a dangerous presence at the junior level is his ability to play the game with pace, able to make plays at top speed and put defenses on their heels with excellent speed and agility . Lysell is incredibly smooth on his skates, able to generate power efficiently with great skating mechanics . While skating with the puck, Lysell does a great job at surveying the ice and recognizing attacking lanes while moving at top speed, which allows him to create offense quickly while in transition and secure controlled zone entries . Fairly undersized and has to do more to get to hard areas of the ice, but has dual threat offensive ability and can create from the perimeter .

Committed to the University of Minnesota for his NCAA career, Lucius will continue to hone his skills as an all-around player and build on his goal-per-game performance for the U S. . Development Team in 2021 . Though Lucius is not the most fleet-of-foot player available in this draft, it is his raw skill, sense, and shooting ability that allows him to be a dynamic offensive player . Lucius is able to read defensive zone coverage with ease and get himself into position to receive high danger offensive chances, as he always seems to be in the right place at the right time and that is not by accident . Lucius also owns arguably the best shot in the draft with a lightning-quick release that allows him to generate power in a hurry and can pick corners regularly . Lucius’ hands in tight are smooth and deceptive, allowing him to make flashy plays at the goal mouth .

In his first season of USHL play, Sillinger didn’t miss a beat, leading the Stampede in scoring with 24 goals and 46 points in 31 games en route being named the league’s Rookie of the Year while also receiving All-Rookie and Second Team All-Star honors . Sillinger’s one clear weakness as a player is his skating ability, however, his ability to process the play at high speeds allows him to make decisions and play quicker than his feet would lead you to believe . Sillinger’s ability to read and manipulate defensive coverage off the give-and-go to create space is top notch, and his quick shot release ensures he doesn’t need much space to be dangerous . Sillinger’s shot release is likely the best of this class; the puck rifles off the blade of his stick with a quick snap of the wrists, allowing him to score from distance by catching netminders off guard with surprising power and accuracy .

This past season in Sweden, Edvinsson dipped his toes into each level of play, splitting the season evenly between the junior level, Sweden’s second-tier pro league, and finally the SHL, demonstrating varying levels of comfort before likely moving full-time to pro hockey as early as next season . Edvinsson’s game is defined by his blend between high-end mobility and physical tools . Edvinsson is remarkably smooth on his skates for a player his size, able to move in all four directions with ease to control gaps and lead offensive transitions through the neutral zone . Edvinsson’s puck moving ability is one of his key selling points, able to weave through the neutral zone to evade pressure and secure both zone exits and entries . Edvinsson’s defensive zone awareness can waver at times as he can get caught puck watching, but he’s generally well-positioned and just needs refinement in that area to round out his defensive game .
