BOOK OF THE MONTH: Under the Harrow by Flynn Berry
Under the Harrow opens with a gruesome scene. Nora, a young woman who lives in London, arrives at her sister Rachel’s home in the English countryside anticipating a weekend filled with home-cooked meals and sisterly companionship. Instead, she finds a grisly crime scene. In a state of grief and disbelief, Nora remains in her sister’s small town to help with the police investigation and to begin her own investigation of sorts.
Under the Harrow reads like a memoir, featuring vivid descriptions of the English landscape and almost palpable images of the sights, sounds, even the foods the sisters share on weekends together. First time author Berry focuses on how grieving possesses “a sense of rules being broken”, as Nora struggles to keep a hold on reality. Weaving in subplots without being conventional, this is an intense, well- written, albeit short, psychological thriller. Nora’s present-tense narration will grab your attention from the start and keep a tight grip on it throughout – it may even leave you wondering about the people you think you know best. - Colleen All Staff Picks are available through the Ocean State Libraries system
