YURTCAN Abstract Eleven agricultural and silviculturally important species of Noctuidae and their parasitoids were determined in 33 localities from the Western Black Sea region between 2001 and 2004. The ichneumonid biological control agents Enicospilus ramidulus, Barylypa amabilis and Itoplectis alternans were obtained by rearing the host larvae. Larvae of some species are par- ticularly harmful to agricultural and silvicultural regions worldwide. Consequently, for years intense efforts have been carried out to control them through chemical, biological, and cultural methods (LIBURD et al. 2000; HOBALLAH et al. 2004; TOPRAK & GÜRKAN 2005). In the field, noctuid control is often carried out by parasitoid wasps (CHO et al. 2006). Ichneumonids are one of the most prevalent parasitoid groups of noctuids but they also parasitize on other many Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera and Araneae (KASPARYAN 1981; FITTON et al. 1987, 1988; GAULD & BOLTON 1988; WAHL 1993; GEORGIEV & KOLAROV 1999). -

Witkowski Marquette University, 2010 What was the legal status of women in early colonial Maryland? This is the central question answered by this dissertation. Women, as exemplified through a series of case studies, understood the law and interacted with the nascent Maryland legal system. Each of the cases in the following chapters is slightly different. Each case examined in this dissertation illustrates how much independent legal agency women in the colony demonstrated. Throughout the seventeenth century, Maryland women appeared before the colony’s Provincial and county courts as witnesses, plaintiffs, defendants, and attorneys in criminal and civil trials. Women further entered their personal cattle marks, claimed land, and sued other colonists. This study asserts that they improved their social standing through these interactions with the courts. By exerting this much legal knowledge, they created an important place for themselves in Maryland society. Historians have begun to question the interpretation that Southern women were restricted to the home as housewives and mothers. -

(=Ectognatha), comprise the largest and most diversified group of living organisms, accounting for roughly half of the biodiversity on Earth. Understanding insect relationships and the specific time intervals for their episodes of radiation and extinction are critical to any comprehensive perspective on evolutionary events. Although some deeper nodes have been resolved congruently, the complete evolution of insects has remained obscure due to the lack of direct fossil evidence. Besides, various evolutionary phases of insects and the corresponding driving forces of diversification remain to be recognized. In this study, a comprehensive sample of all insect orders was used to reconstruct their phylogenetic relationships and estimate deep divergences. The phylogenetic relationships of insect orders were congruently recovered by Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses. A complete timescale of divergences based on an uncorrelated log-normal relaxed clock model was established among all lineages of winged insects. The inferred timescale for various nodes are congruent with major historical events including the increase of atmospheric oxygen in the Late Silurian and earliest Devonian, the radiation of vascular plants in the Devonian, and with the available fossil record of the stem groups to various insect lineages in the Devonian and Carboniferous. Over half of all described living species are insects, and they dominate all terrestrial ecosystems1. -

SMITH, Assistant Entomologist, Division of Cereal and Forage Insects, Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture. ^ INTRODUCTION Heterospilus cephi ^ Kohwer is a major parasite of the European wheat sawfly, Cephus pygmaeus (Linnaeus). It was first reared from this host in 1924, by Donald T. Ries. In 1925, it was described by Rohwer,^ and the following year reference was made to it by Ries ^ in a paper on the wheat-stem sawfly. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain details of the mor- phology and life history of this parasite. GEOGRAPHICALIDISTRIBUTION Heterospilus cephi has been found throughout most of the western wheat areas of the State of New Xork, from Syracuse and the Finger Lakes westward to Lake Erie, and over a limited area in northern Pennsylvania, but has not yet been recovered south of Lycoming County, Pa. Figure 1 shows the districts of New York and Penn- sylvania from which it has been recovered. How- ever, when- introduced into a large outdoor cage containing whea- infested with the black grain-stem sawfly, Trachelus tabidus (Fab.), it parasitized this species freely and passed through its complete normal life cycle on this host without difiiculty. 'This would indicate its ability to adapt itself to this host even though it does not already normally parasitize it. It is possible that the different geographical ranges of these two sawflies may account for the apparent failure of H. -

Mechanisms behind the Usurpation of Thyrinteina leucocerae by Glyptapanteles sp. Introduction It has frequently been proposed that parasites purposefully manipulate their hosts in order to increase their fitness, usually to the detriment of the host (Lefevre et al. 2008, Poulin & Thomas 1999). A recent hypothesis known as the ‘usurpation hypothesis’ argues that parasites manipulate hosts in such a way that the host guards their larvae from hyperparasitoids, or predators of the parasitoids (Harvey et al. 2008). Examples demonstrating the usurpation hypothesis are limited, but a few compelling instances do exist. In one system, parasitoid wasps cause aphid hosts to mummify in more concealed sites in order to protect diapausing aphid larva (Brodeur & McNeil 1989). The parasitoid Hymenoepimecis sp. has also been shown to induce its spider host Plesiometa argyra to build a specialized web designed to carry developing parasitoid cocoons (Eberhard 2000). It appears that the wasps may utilize some kind of fast acting chemical, as removal of the wasp larva results in spiders reverting back to normal web construction (Eberhard 2001). While these examples are compelling, evidence for the specific mechanisms utilized by parasitoids to alter their host’s behavior is largely unknown. However, a recent system of study may provide interesting insight on the mechanisms behind host usurpation. In this system parasitic wasps lay their eggs in the larva of caterpillars until they are ready to egress from the caterpillar and pupate (Grosman et al. 2008). Following parasite egression the host caterpillars cease to feed and walk, and defend the parsitoid pupae by producing head swings against approaching predators (Grosman et al. -

ABSTRACT Predatory hornets are considered as one of the major constraints to beekeeping industry. Therefore, its incidence and predation rate was studied throughout the year at two locations rural and forest areas of mid-hill in Laliptur district during 2016/017 to 2017/018. Observation was made on the number of hornet and honeybee captured by hornet in three different times of the day for three continuous minutes every fortnightly on five honeybee colonies. During the study period, major hornet species captured around the honeybee apiary at both locations were, Vespa velutina Lepeletier, Vespa basalis Smith, Vespa tropica (Linnaeus) and Vespa mandarina Smith. The hornet incidence varied significantly between the years and locations along with different observation dates. -

Results obtained that 72% respondents commercially rearing Apis millifera and 11% rearing Apis cerana. Farmers having 22-117 numbers of hives found maximum (77%). Maximum number of hives rearing found was 500 by commercial bee keepers. Average hive number and Average productivity found were 98 and 31.2kg per hive per year (Apis millifera). -

Bacteria Associated with Larvae and Adults of the Asian Longhorned Beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)1 John D. Podgwaite2, Vincent D' Amico3, Roger T. Sci. 48(2): 128·138 (April2013) Abstract Bacteria representing several genera were isolated from integument and alimentary tracts of live Asian longhorned beetle, Anaplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky), larvae and adults. Insects examined were from infested tree branches collected from sites in New York and Illinois. Staphylococcus sciuri (Kloos) was the most common isolate associated with adults, from 13 of 19 examined, whereas members of the Enterobacteriaceae dominated the isolations from larvae. Leclercia adecarboxylata (Leclerc), a putative pathogen of Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), was found in 12 of 371arvae examined. Several opportunistic human pathogens, including S. xylosus (Schleifer and Kloos), S. intermedius (Hajek), S. hominis (Kloos and Schleifer), Pantoea agglomerans (Ewing and Fife), Serratia proteamaculans (Paine and Stansfield) and Klebsiella oxytoca (Fiugge) also were isolated from both larvae and adults. One isolate, found in 1 adult and several larvae, was identified as Tsukamurella inchonensis (Yassin) also an opportunistic human pathogen and possibly of Korean origin .. We have no evi dence that any of the microorganisms isolated are pathogenic for the Asian longhorned beetle. Key Words Asian longhorned beetle, Anaplophora glabripennis, bacteria The Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky) a pest native to China and Korea, often has been found associated with wood- packing ma terial arriving in ports of entry to the United States. The pest has many hardwood hosts, particularly maples (Acer spp.), and currently is established in isolated popula tions in at least 3 states- New York, NJ and Massachusetts (USDA-APHIS 201 0).
