See, it came out when I was a poor college student, so I put off buying them because of the expense. I didnt want to buy just one then come back and buy another later. I wanted to devour them all in a matter of days.I was wrong. So very wrong. This is the kind of visceral artistic mastery that one should grab however it is made available, in whatever form & wherever one must travel for it. Its amazing. This book can be bought and savored for weeks. It doesnt need the others to be appreciated. I naturally saw the movie, and while they did a superb job with it, nothing touches the gritty feel you get with Millers words, artwork and lettering. This is only the second time Ive been in awe of lettering ... the first being Deliriums words in Gaimans Sandman. This is nothing short of mastery. All I can say with perfect accuracy is, Wow. • Sin City: O Neo-Noir Como Emergência Do Noir Enquanto Gênero a Posteriori E a Influência Múltipla Entre Diversas Linguagens (Literatura, Cinema E Quadrinhos)
SIN CITY: O NEO-NOIR COMO EMERGÊNCIA DO NOIR ENQUANTO GÊNERO A POSTERIORI E A INFLUÊNCIA MÚLTIPLA ENTRE DIVERSAS LINGUAGENS (LITERATURA, CINEMA E QUADRINHOS) ADÉRITO SCHNEIDER UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE GOIÁS (UFG) RESUMO: Este artigo parte do filme Sin City: A cidade do pecado (Robert Rodriguez e Frank Miller, 2005) para analisar o conceito de noir. ABSTRACT: This essay analyses the concept of noir in the Sin City film, by Robert Rodriguez e Frank Miller (2005). The hypothesis raised is that noir is a sub-genus cinematographic and literary which is built a posteriori, as a result of multiple and complex influences through a tautological dialogue between different artistic languages, such as, literature, fimls and graphic novels. Thus, this paper is an attempt to rebuilt, in a summarized manner, the trajectory of noir going through the detective novels of the 1940 and 1950 until reach on the analysis of the Sin City graphic novel serie (1990) and its screen adaptation of the beginning of XXI century.

  • Nevada's Restrictions on Advertisements for Legal Brothel Services
BUT I THOUGHT THIS WAS SIN CITY!: NEVADA'S RESTRICTIONS ON ADVERTISEMENTS FOR LEGAL BROTHEL SERVICES Denise S. Balboni* INTRODUCTION Advertisements enjoy First Amendment protection because, as "tasteless and excessive" as they may sometimes seem, our national economy depends on the free flow of such commercial information to aid "intelligent and well informed" private economic decisions.1 However, this First Amendment pro- tection is not absolute. Advertisements, unlike political speech, are considered commercial because they are "expression[s] related solely to the economic interests of the speaker and its audience." 2 Consequently, state and local lawmakers enjoy some latitude to define and restrict the dissemination of advertisements in accordance with public policy. Within Nevada, the commer- cial speech debate has historically concerned the extent to which the legislature can restrict gaming advertisements. However, a matter of more current debate concerns the legality of the restrictions placed upon advertisements for legal brothel services.3 Despite prostitution's legality in certain Nevada counties, Nevada law sig- nificantly limits the locations in which the brothels may advertise their services. This Note discusses the constitutionality of these statutory restrictions in light of current Supreme Court jurisprudence on the regulation of commercial speech. Part I surveys the development of First Amendment protection granted to commercial speech in general by the U.S. Supreme Court and explains the two types of restrictions states or localities frequently utilize. Part II examines the level of First Amendment protection granted to commercial speech con- cerning vice activities or products.4 Part III explains the modern test for deter- mining the constitutionality of commercial speech restrictions.

  • Frank Miller's Sin City
WHEN MACHO ANGST TURNS INTO VIOLENCE: FRANK MILLER'S SIN CITY NATALIA MARTÍNEZ MARTÍNEZ UNED Frank Miller is a legend in the comic industry, in fact many of his graphic novels have been praised by the critics. He draws himself many of his comic books and he has even directed two movies adapting his Sin City series, composed by the comic books that will be discussed in this article. All these reasons make him a complete and extraordi- nary artist. Miller, as a pioneer of the comics aimed at an adult public, overtly displays sex, more blood, and more violence in his works than it was ever conceivable in the graphic novel world. Part of that violence depicted in his comics is directed against women, as in the case of the Sin City series. In an article called “Violence Against Women” published in the WHO’s webpage, The United Nations define gender violence as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life” (“Violence Against Women” 2017). Un- fortunately, this is a situation suffered by many women in the world every day. The American psychologist Lenore E. Walker affirmed that “the single most powerful risk marker for becoming a victim of violence is to be a woman.” (1999, 23) This is a very revealing and powerful statement; according to Walker, a woman, just because of her gender, has more chances to become a victim of violence than any man.

These are just some of the many typical themes in horror movies today. “Sin City” is no different. Written and directed by Frank Miller, “Sin City” takes on a new level of terror, masquerading itself not only under the guise of a graphic novel, but also as a cinematographic piece of art – the film is shot entirely in black and white with only one or two objects in color in each scene. In analyzing this movie from a feminist standpoint, the list of things to critique goes on quite a bit.

Building upon the theory of remediation defined by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin, I describe a contemporary facet of the relationship between these two media forms as exemplifying stylistic remediation, or the representation of one medium’s stylistic characteristics within another medium. Through the following chapters, I will investigate the complex and ever evolving formal relationship between these two media forms, which are also experiencing convergence at the levels of the industries which produce them and the customers who consume them. Moreover, I will also offer commentary upon the potential economic future of stylistic remediation and what new hybrid forms of media these trends in form and conglomeration have begun to produce.

I greatly appreciate their invaluable help, which came via many hours of reading, critiquing and offering suggestions, as well as weeding through typos and muddled syntax. Not only has their input improved the quality of this project, but they have each helped form me into a better scholar. I am truly grateful for this, and I have enjoyed getting to know each of them along the way. Thanks also to the University and the Institute for American Thought for providing a fellowship and assistantship, respectively, without which it would have been much more difficult to pursue graduate studies. My lovely wife Sarah deserves the highest praise for her encouragement and support both in this project and in my studies in general. The decision to allow me to pursue fulfillment (not to mention vocational preparation) through deeper study was not an easy one, as it required both many hours apart for these pining newlyweds as well as monetary sacrifice. Her wit, intelligence and humor have sustained me through the last couple of years, and I am incredibly fortunate to be her husband.
