Wickware, Jr. 2018 Abstract In this dissertation, I examine the widespread failure of racial reconciliation work between black and white Christians in US American churches. I treat such failure as a failure of love, specifically the failure of black and white Christians to love each other as enemies. This sets two primary tasks for the dissertation. First, I work to understand this failure of love. Drawing on black studies—on the work of Frank Wilderson, in particular—I examine what I call the racial enemy relation, which I argue is a fundamental antagonism between black people and white people. This antagonism is grounded in and perpetuates white supremacist systems of violence and exploitation. I turn to affect theory to argue that this enemy relation is obscured by a distorted love. At the heart of this distorted love is what Sara Ahmed calls the promise of happiness. In short, I argue that racial reconciliation work fails insofar as Christians embrace an idea of love that confuses good feelings with good relations and, in doing so, are unable to confront the racial enemy relation with faithful love. Second, I give a Christian theological account of faithful love that can guide intervention into the distorted love of white supremacy and promote a constructive approach to love of the racial enemy. In conversation primarily with black, womanist, and feminist theologies, I argue for a notion of faithful love as the embrace of the lover’s need for the beloved, while holding such love accountable to self-love, love for God, and iv God’s love for those who suffer. I ground this account of love in an understanding of divine love as driven by God’s need for creation, including humanity. My wife, Elizabeth, has handled her shifting responsibilities—sometimes working full-time, sometimes taking on extra childcare, usually handling matters of finance that just don’t make sense to me—with the grace, intelligence, and kindness that are apparent to all those who are lucky enough to love her. Our older child, Nathaniel, has been a constant source of encouragement to me, and his deep sensitivity has pushed me to think more deeply about the importance and power of feelings. The giggling, wailing, and babbling of Gabriel, our younger child, have kept my work in perspective, reminding me of my limits and humbling me daily. My parents, Marvin Sr. and Jenifer, as well as my sister, Carmen, have frequently traveled hundreds of miles from Indiana to provide childcare and to keep the bonds of family strong. Without their love and encouragement, I could never have even made it to a doctoral program, and would have lacked the stubbornness to make it through. My parents-in-law, John and Suzanne Kilner, have worked faithfully to love their difficult son-in-law. My brother-in-law, Paul, has endured regular disruptions of the rhythm of his life, not only in travel between Chicago and Durham, but also in meeting the challenges of adding small children to the time we spend together. Suzanne, in particular, dropped everything to be with us when we lost our first pregnancy and made an isolating, painful experience into a lesson on ix love’s healing power. Our church family at Durham Presbyterian Church has also been crucial to the completion of this dissertation, not only as the community in which I have tried to live out the ideas that arose in my work, but also as a source of material and social support

It is not only an open- hearted and hopeful little effort at theoretically codifying the expansive revolutionary promise of the second wave of the Women’s Movement, a promise that would soon be dashed from within and without. Marcuse’s political and philosophical assumptions were also vulnerable to emerg- ing postfoundational critiques of the humanist subject, progressive his- toriography, and their entailments: essentialized identities, totalizing identities, undeconstructed binary oppositions, faith in emancipation, and revolution.     religions Essay Historiography and Remembrance: On Walter Benjamin’s Concept of Eingedenken Charlotte Odilia Bohn Institute for Art Theory and Cultural Studies, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, 1010 Vienna, Austria; [email protected] Received: 15 November 2018; Accepted: 5 January 2019; Published: 10 January 2019 Abstract: Engaging with Walter Benjamin’s concept of Eingedenken (remembrance), this article explores the pivotal role that remembrance plays in his attempt to develop a radically new vision of history, temporality, and human agency. Building on his essay “On Some Motifs in Baudelaire” and on his last written text, “Theses on the Philosophy of History”, it will trace how memory and historiography are brought together in a curious fusion of materialist and messianic thinking. Emerging from a critique of modernity and its ideology of progress that is cast as crisis—the practice of remembrance promises a ‘way out’. Many of Benjamin’s secular Marxist critics such as Max Horkheimer and Rolf Tiedemann, however, denied the political significance of Eingedenken—dismissing it as theological or banishing it to the realm of aesthetics. Rejecting this critique, I suggest that the radical ethical aspects of Eingedenken can be grasped only once the theological dimension is embraced in its own right and that it is in precisely this blend of materialist and messianic thought that revolutionary hope may be found. Mapping Girls’ Aff ective Encounters with Femininity, Sexuality, and Feminism at School Jessica Ringrose and Emma Renold International research has documented the phenomenon of contem- porary young women repudiating or disinvesting from identifi cations with feminism (Jowett 2004: 99; Baker 2008; Scharff 2012). Indeed, femi- nism is frequently constituted as both abject and obsolete by a postfem- inist media context that suggests women are now equal in education, the workplace, and the home (McRobbie 2008; Ringrose and Renold 2010). Most of the scholarship on the relationship between new fem- ininities (Gill and Scharff 2011) and diff erent forms of feminism or postfeminism (Budgeon 2011), does not, however, explicitly deal with adolescence and teen girls’ relationships to feminism, although there is some writing on how the girl and associations with girlishness have historically been set in contradiction to a feminist identity, and the need to overcome this and take girls’ political subjectivities seriously (Baumgardner and Richards 2004; Eisenhauer 2004). One particularly promising area is a growing literature exploring girls’ political, activist, or counter-cultural subjectivities, via girls’ on- line identity formation (Weber and Mitchell 2008; Currie et al. 2009) through new media practices such as blogging, zines, and digital social networking (Piepmeier, 2009; Zaslow 2009; Ringrose 2011; Keller 2012; see also Keller’s contribution to this volume, among others). However, there is still a limited amount of research that focuses on teenage girls explicitly taking up feminist activist identities and practices. Indeed, much research, including our own, has focused on what Currie et al. call “de facto feminism” (2008: 39) that is, discursive traces of feminist ideology or resistance in the talk and experiences of teen girls, even if they do not explicitly identify with or defi ne themselves as feminist (Renold and Ringrose 2008, 2011).
