Walking behind to hem my journey Going ahead to light my way And from beneath, above, and all ways (refr ain) 5. Christ in the eyes of all who see me Christ in the ears who hear my voice Christ in the hearts of all who know me (refr ain) Welcome to Worship Welcome to worship at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. It is the season of Pentecost, the time when we celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit among God’s people. Each new year, God’s people must listen for God’s Spirit. But Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to his followers. Th at means to know the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we just have to ask. Ask with me. Where are you, Holy Spirit? We want to know. We want to know the contagious joy of love that knows no bounds. We want to feel your translating power with those we do not understand. We want to hear the words of scripture as though you speak them to us. We want to know God like an old friend who never goes away. Where are you, Holy Spirit? We want to know. Th e Holy Spirit is already here. Th e Holy Spirit brought you here. Th e Holy Spirit gave you hunger and thirst for the things of God. And the Holy Spirit helps us sing. Gathering Song – “Your Name Is Power,” Chris Llewellyn and Gareth Gilkeson 1. You’re the only answer to the darkness You’re the only right among the wrong You’re the only hope among the chaos You are the voice that calls me on Pre-Chorus: Louder than ev’ry lie My sword in ev’ry fi ght Th e truth will chase away the night Chorus: Your name is power over darkness Freedom for the captives Mercy for the broken and the hopeless Your name is faithful in the battle Glory in the struggle Mighty it won’t let us down or fail us Your name is power Your name is power 2. I know it is written hope is certain I know that the Word will never fail I know that in ev’ry situation You speak the power to prevail (pre-chorus, chorus) Bridge: When You speak You scatter darkness Light arrives and heaven opens Holy Spirit let us hear it When You speak the church awakens We believe the change is coming Holy Spirit let us see it (repeat bridge) Final Chorus: Your name is power over darkness Freedom for the captives Mercy for the broken and the hopeless Your name is faithful in the battle Glory in the struggle Mighty it won’t let us down or fail us Tag: Your name is power over darkness Your name is power in the chaos Your name is power Confession and Forgiveness We long to be holy; we feel desperate for goodness. But every day we fi nd ourselves setting our minds on that which passes away—on things that are temporary, wasteful, meaningless, even harmful. In the scripture, setting our minds on what is temporary is to set our minds on death. And when the Spirit helps us recognize this, we are driven to confess our sins. Please, join me as we confess our sins. Holy Spirit, when we look back on our lives, and we try to count our sins, we fail. Sin fi lls our lives. We live with regret. We carry mistakes we cannot for- get. We live in the shadow of the problems we’ve caused and the damage we’ve done. Our sins even become the way we think of ourselves, as if we are defi ned by our failures. If this is how we see ourselves, what do you see? People of God, this is the remarkable Good News: when the Holy Spirit forgives, that forgiveness is total. Th at means when God beholds you, God does not see your sin. God cannot. Because it is as if our sins never happened. Friends, can you confess what this means? It means: I see my guilt. God sees someone worthy of love. I see my failure. God sees someone fi lled with gift s. I see my meaninglessness. God sees a person gift ed with purpose. Th e Holy Spirit enabled you to ask for forgiveness; the Holy Spirit has forgiven you. You can breathe easy, my friends; because now you know that the Holy Spirit breathes new life into dead bones. Th ank you, Holy Spirit! Amen. Song of Praise – “It Is Well,” Horatio Spaff ord and Philip Bliss 1. When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, “Even so, it is well with my soul.” Chorus: It is well with my soul. It is well, it is well with my soul. 2. And Lord haste the day when my faith shall be sight, Th e clouds be rolled back as a scroll, Th e trumpet shall resound and the Lord shall descend; Even so, it is well with my soul. (chorus, solo) Ending: Whatever my lot, though hast taught me to say, “Even so, it is well with my soul.” It is well, with my soul. It is well, it is well with my soul. It is well, with my soul. It is well, it is well with my soul.

  • A Music and Lyric Analysis of 259 Finalists from the Eurovision Song Contest 2010-2019
Songs for Europe: a music and lyric analysis of 259 finalists from the Eurovision Song Contest 2010-2019 Prof Joe Bennett (Berklee College of Music, USA), Simon Troup (Digital Music Art, UK) Abstract: This corpus study provides an overview of the common musical and lyric characteristics of songs from the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) during the past decade. It uses as its dataset 259 songs, comprising the 25-27 finalists in each year’s Grand Final. Hard data includes high-level musical characteristics such as tempo, key, tonality, dynamic range, and melodic pitch range. Soft data includes lyric themes and musical style. Song styles were categorized according to six ‘archetypes’, adapted from existing categories suggested by previous ESC journalism and academic writing.1 Lyric themes were categorized according to six core themes identified by the researchers through detailed listening and text analysis. The full corpus was analysed, to discuss common musical and lyric characteristics of each archetype, and high and low-scoring subgroups were compared, to investigate whether there are common music or lyric characteristics that correlate with success (measured in numbers of aggregated points per song). Methodology included computer-aided audio analysis (BPM detection, dynamic range), subjective listening (archetype and lyric classification), music analysis (key centre, tonality) and statistical analysis of the dataset. The research, which is an ongoing project 2020-2021, aims to identify the high-level characteristics (of tonality, archetype, lyric theme, dynamic range, tempo etc) exhibited by finalists, and to investigate any characteristics that differentiate winners and other high- scoring songs. 2 1 Jess Carniel, “‘Schlager’, Scandi-Pop and Sparkles: Your Guide to the Musical Styles of Eurovision,” The Conversation, May 9, 2018, http://theconversation.com/schlager-scandi-pop-and-sparkles-your-guide-to-the-musical-styles-of-eurovision-96268.
