An in-situ occurrence of tourmaline-corundum rock at Menglembu, Kinta Valley, Perak T.T. KHoo 17 Orange St. Eastwood 2122, Australia Abstract: An in-situ occurrence oftourmaline-corundum rock was discovered in the Yu Wan Ring Tin Mine, Menglembu. The rock is interlayered with marble-phyllite and striking east west. The contact of the rock with the marble-phyllite shows evidence of the selective replacement ofthe phyllite by the tourmaline-corundum rock leaving the unconsumed marble as slivers or fragments within the tourmaline-corundum rock. It is interpreted that the tourmaline-corundum rock is derived from the phyllite and not from other parental rocks like bauxite as suggested in some studies. INTRODUCTION Ingham and Bradford (1960) and Senathi Rajah (1979), in-situ outcrops of the rock are always The tourmaline-corundum rock (Scrivenor, associated with schists and indeed the sketches 1910, 1913, 1928, 1931; Scrivenor and Jones, of occurrences of the rock enclosed within 1919; Willbourn, 1931) occurring in the Kinta schistose pelitic rocks in Scrivenor (1931) and Valley, Perak is a lithological oddity usually Willbourn (1931) are most instructive in with ovoid or spherical corundum bodies in a providing important leads for unravelling the groundmass of dark tourmaline. • "Menteri Besar Designate" Factor Will Boost Bn's Chances in Gerik
20 NOV 1999 Tajol-MB "MENTERI BESAR DESIGNATE" FACTOR WILL BOOST BN'S CHANCES IN GERIK GERIK, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- There was much excitement at the nomination centre here for the Gerik Parliamentary and the three state seats within it, not only because of the straight fights but also among the candidates was someone who is likely to be Perak's next Chief Executive. When the Returning Officer announced that Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali, 55, has been accepted as a candidate for the Kenering state at 1.15pm, there was loud applause from the crowd of 4,000 which believed that the Gerik MP since 1978 would be their new Menteri Besar. Gerik has 38,637 voters spread among three state constituencies of Pengkalan Hulu (14, 848 voters), Temenggor (11,879) and Kenering (11,910) and are known to be a BN stronghold where PAS and Keadilan are trying to sneak in. Tajol Rosli had won the Kenering seat and had been the assemblyman for nine months in 1977 after his father Tan Sri Ghazali Jawi vacated the seat and was named an ambassador. The soft-spoken Tajol Rosli insisted that he did not receive any indication from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir about the Menteri Besar's post. Nevertheless the majority of the people in Gerik were confident that he would be the next Menteri Besar of Perak. "He has a clean record and is a moderate figure," said the BN candidate for Pengkalan Hulu, Ibrahim Mohamed Hanafiah. He said the "Menteri Besar Designate" factor would greatly help the BN campaign and there had been no personal attack against Tajol by the opposition.

Under the so called Perak Amanjaya Development Plan, some of the things that we have tried to do are the same things that I believe many others here are concerned about: first, balanced development and economic distribution between the urban and rural areas by focusing on developing small towns; second, poverty eradication regardless of race or religion so that no one remains on the fringes of society or is left behind economically; and, third, youth empowerment. Under the first one, the state identifies viable small- and medium-size companies which can operate from small towns. These companies are to be working closely with the state government to boost the economy of the respective areas.

SUSAN M. MARTIN MARTIN SUSAN M. The UP Saga Susan M. Martin Histories of the plantations sector in Malaysia have largely focused on the rubber industry and on the rise and fall of big British-owned colonial enter- prises. But since independence, the sector has entered a new phase of spectacular growth founded on the oil palm. This volume offers a radically different history by telling the fascinating story of United Plantations Berhad (UP), a firm of Scandinavian origin that has spanned both eras and evolved along quite different lines from the normal models of British imperial business. The book is also unusual in that the author had full access to well-preserved company records. Tracing the company’s origins before the First World War, The UP Saga describes the crisis years of economic depression, Japanese occupa- T tion and the turmoil of the Emergency, followed by Merdeka and the years he of spectacular growth that have lasted to the present day. ‘[The UP Saga] is expertly researched and is therefore a radically differ- UP ent history of the plantation industry. It offers the reader an authoritative and quite remarkable study … authenticated by the personal experiences The of many recognised experts in this field. … Through her work on The UP S Saga Susan Martin has produced a work of historic importance and great aga interest to all those interested in the development of the global palm oil industry.’ ~ William King, London Metropolitan University UP ‘Potential purchasers should not be fooled by the title into believing that this book is merely yet another company history.

The remaining seats went to Barisan Nasional (BN). On 17.3.2008, the appellant was appointed the Menteri Besar of Perak (the MB) by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak (HRH). On 5.2.2009 three members of the LA for Behrang, Changkat Jering and Jelapang declared and informed HRH that they no longer supported the PKR and instead threw their support behind BN. The appellant then had an audience with HRH on the same day where he was informed that his request for dissolution of the LA was rejected by HRH.
