  • Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret
Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret FOREWORD This record has been prepared especially for readers unfamiliar with the details of Mr. Hudson Taylor's life. Those who have read the larger biography by the present writers, or Mr. Marshall Broomhall's more recent presentation, will find little that is new in these pages. But there are many, in the western world especially, who have hardly heard of Hudson Taylor, who have little time for reading and might turn away from a book in two volumes, yet who need and long for just the inward joy and power that Hudson Taylor found. The desire of the writers is to make available to busy people the experiences of their beloved father—thankful for the blessing brought to their own lives by what he was, and what he found in God, no less than by his fruitful labors. Howard and Geraldine Taylor Philadelphia, May 21, 1932 Men are God's method. The church is looking for better methods; God is looking for better men. What the church needs today is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use—men of prayer, men mighty in prayer. The Holy Ghost does not come on machinery, but on men. He does not anoint plans, but men—men of prayer . The training of the Twelve was the great, difficult and enduring work of Christ. It is not great talents or great learning or great preachers that God needs, but men great in holiness, great in faith, great in love, great in fidelity, great for God—men always preaching by holy sermons in the pulpit, by holy lives out of it.

  • Chinese Protestant Christianity Today Daniel H. Bays
Chinese Protestant Christianity Today Daniel H. Bays ABSTRACT Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. In many ways it is the most striking example of that resurgence. Along with Roman Catholics, as of the 1950s Chinese Protestants carried the heavy historical liability of association with Western domi- nation or imperialism in China, yet they have not only overcome that inheritance but have achieved remarkable growth. Popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants. This article first traces the gradual extension of interest in Chinese Protestants from Christian circles to the scholarly world during the last two decades, and then discusses salient characteristics of the Protestant movement today. These include its size and rate of growth, the role of Church–state relations, the continuing foreign legacy in some parts of the Church, the strong flavour of popular religion which suffuses Protestantism today, the discourse of Chinese intellectuals on Christianity, and Protestantism in the context of the rapid economic changes occurring in China, concluding with a perspective from world Christianity. Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. Today, on any given Sunday there are almost certainly more Protestants in church in China than in all of Europe.1 One recent thoughtful scholarly assessment characterizes Protestantism as “flourishing” though also “fractured” (organizationally) and “fragile” (due to limits on the social and cultural role of the Church).2 And popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants.

  • Inventory to the Helen E
1 Inventory to the Helen E. Falls Collection AR 680 Prepared by: Taffey Hall, Archivist Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives August 2003 2 I. Biographical Sketch Dr. Helen Emery Falls, retired professor of Missions at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS) in New Orleans, Louisiana, dedicated her life to the teaching Southern Baptist mission studies. Though Falls never served as a missionary, her expertise in the knowledge and understanding of the history and structure of Southern Baptist missions both at home and abroad make her a connoisseur in the field of mission studies. She served as Professor of Missions and Dean of Women at NOBTS from 1945 to 1982 and has remained active in missions-education across the country since her retirement, serving as a visiting professor of missions at Boyce Bible College (a school of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary), Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She also contributed articles to the Encyclopedia of Southern Baptists project of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Historical Commission. The daughter of an active Southern Baptist minister, Helen Falls spent much of the early years of her life moving from city to city with her family as her father accepted pastoral positions at various churches across the country. She was born in Bay City, Texas on April 17, 1916 to the Rev. Oswald Benjamin and Glennie Augusta (Parker). Shortly after she was born, Helen’s father accepted the position of pastor at the First Baptist Church of Kissimee, Florida. The Falls family stayed in Florida until 1921 when Helen’s father next accepted a pastoral position in Marion, South Carolina and two years later, a position in Bamberg, South Carolina.

Guillermin Library Liberty University Lynchburg, VA 24502 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY THE ROLE OF A NEW TESTAMENT DEACON: AN OFFICE TO HOLD OR A MINISTRY TO PERFORM? A Dissertation Submitted to Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF MINISTRY By Waylan Lawrence Payne, Jf. Lynchburg, Virginia May, 1996 LIBERTY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY THESIS PROJECT APPROVAL SHEET /J- GRADE ABSTRACT THE ROLE OF A NEW TESTAMENT DEACON: AN OFFICE TO HOLD OR A MINISTRY TO PERFORM? Waylan L. Payne, Jr. Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, 1996 Mentor: Dr. Carl 1. Diemer, Jr. The function of deacons in many Southern Baptist churches is inconsistent with biblical principles, creating confusion at the local church level. This phenomenon is substantiated by information gathered from available literature, surveys, and personal interviews with professors, pastors and deacons. The purpose of this paper is to present a biblical and historical basis for the diaconate and to provide successful deacon ministries as positive role models. Two church offices are recognized--pastor/elder/overseer and deacon. Deacons are not elders or overseers. When they attempt to perform as such, administrating church business, they are functionally violating New Testament principle and practice. Abstract length: 99 words. Carns Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, 1993 Mentor: Dr. William Matheny Reader: Dr. James Freerksen The purpose of this thesis project is to provide a rationale for the pastor of an independent Baptist church to lead his church into a revitalization program. The author selected the topic for two reasons: (1) Church stagnation/decline has become a spiritual disease of epidemic proportions and (2) The author pastored a church which was experiencing decline and viable strategies needed to be understood, accepted and implemented. The main body presents the reasons a church needs to clarify its mission, analyze its program, prioritize its objectives and revitalize its ministry. The appendices delineate the steps taken in the author's church to pursue the above objectives. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF TABLES .............................................VI INTRODUCTION ..............................................1 Chapter 1.
