‘A huge moment for the fast-growing company’ Robinhood makes its $32bn debut on Wall Street NEW YORK, July 29, (AP): Robin- hood’s stock began trading Thursday on Wall Street, the very place the on- line brokerage has rattled with its stated goal of democratizing fi nance. Through its app, Robinhood has introduced millions to investing and reshaped the brokerage industry, all while racking up a long list of contro- versies in less than eight years. Robinhood Markets and three of its executives are selling up to 60.5 mil- lion shares of its stock in the initial public offering, with trading expected to begin on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “HOOD.” It was priced late Wednesday at $38 a share, the low end of its expected range of $38 to $42, perhaps a sign of tepid investor interest. That price puts the company’s total value at close to $32 billion, which puts it on par with companies like Stanley Black & Decker and V.F. Corp., whose apparel brands include Timberland boots and Supreme streetwear. Robinhood itself raised nearly $1.9 billion in the deal, which it plans to use to expand and to help pay for expected tax obligations. Still, it’s a huge moment for the fast-growing company based in Menlo Park, California, which is reserving many of the shares for its own custom- ers, rather than just big professional in- vestors. Can Robinhood convince them to embrace its stock, just as it helped a generation of investors take on trading stocks, options and cryptocurrencies? Here are a few things to keep in mind ahead of what’s one of the most antici- pated IPOs on Wall Street this year: How does a free service make money? US extends J&J expiry dates Youth focus of infection in Mexico’s third wave

MEXICO CITY, July 29, (AP): Hours after Mexico City au- thorities raised the capital’s COVID-19 alert level in the face of surging infections, especially among young people, resi- dents packed a plaza on a pleasant evening in the charming Coyoacan borough. Among them was Mario Estrada Flores, a lanky 21-year-old college student, who along with nine friends — all without masks — started up an impromptu rap performance that drew dozens of applauding onlookers. “I’m not worried about getting infected because I’m young,” Estrada Flores said. “I have more defenses than an older per- son ... we have the idea that since we’re young nothing bad is going to happen to us or if we do get it it’s not going to be so strong.” Specialists say that attitude is com- mon in Mexico’s youth, a population that is driving the increase in infections in the country’s third pandemic wave. Mexico has registered 2.75 mil- lion confi rmed infections and more than 238,000 COVID-19 deaths, both fi gures the government concedes are signifi cant undercounts. The country’s death total places it behind only the United States, and India. Throughout the pandemic, Mexico Obrador President Andrés Manuel López Ob- rador has resisted imposing strict lock- downs seen in other countries or limiting travelers arriving from abroad. His government opted for a rapid expansion of hospital beds to treat COVID-19 patients, recognizing early on that much of the population had to leave home every day to A student wears a face mask while doing work at his desk at the Post Road Elementary School, in White Plains, NY, in this Oct 1, 2020, file photo. Top Spotify charts ’s Maneskin enjoy blurring stereotypes

ROME, July 29, (AP): Several years ago they were four teenagers busking in the piazzas of Rome. These days, the members of the rock band Maneskin are basking in adoration after triumphing in the Eurovi- sion Song Contest and consistently riding high in Spo- tify charts. With their androgynous outfi ts, in-your-face videos and what their lead singer calls “cathartic anger,” they tell The Associated Press they’re having a blast blur- ring stereotypes. Taking a break from their high-octane artistic routines, Maneskin members sat still on a couch in a Rome hotel on Tuesday evening for a half-hour to refl ect on how they plan to use their new-found fame. “We feel free to wear what- ever makes us feel right, and we are also trying to send a message about blurring all these kinds of stereotypes, be- tween gender norms and stuff,” said bassist Victoria De Ange- lis. “We think it’s just fi ne to wear whatever makes you feel good with yourself.” Whatever it is they do — defying neat categories in the De Angelis process- music listeners love it.
