Opportunities provided by Acceleration in

The accelerated math courses in grades 7 and 8, including Accelerated Math 7, Algebra 1/Accelerated Math 8 and , are rigorous and require students to take semester and final exams. Students may not earn high school credit for accelerated math courses taken in ; however, success in the Algebra 1/Accelerated Math 8 course or in Geometry will allow students to continue their acceleration in the math curriculum in high school. • students who earn a final grade of A (93%) or better in Algebra 1/Accelerated Math 8 may wish to consider enrolling in two math courses, Geometry and Algebra 2, to be taken concurrently in . • Eighth grade students who earn a final grade of B (83%) or better in Algebra 1/Accelerated Math 8 may enroll in Geometry, Level I for ninth grade. • Eighth grade students who earn a final grade of B (83%) or better in Geometry, Level I may enroll in Algebra 2, Level I for ninth grade. • Seventh grade students who earn a final grade of B (83%) or better in Algebra 1/Accelerated Math 8 may enroll in Geometry, Level I as their math course for eighth grade.

Math achievement in middle school does impact science course placement at the high school. • Students who earn a B- or better in Grade 8 Math and eighth grade science are eligible for recommendation to Level 1 Geophysical Science. • Students who earn an A- or better in Algebra 1/Accelerated Math 8 and eighth grade science are eligible for recommendation to Accelerated Geophysical Science. • Students who earn an A or better in Algebra 1/Accelerated Math 8 and eighth grade science are eligible for recommendation to Accelerated Chemistry in grade nine, as long as they also enroll in both Geometry and Algebra 2 to be taken concurrently. • Students who earn a B or better in Geometry and an A or better in eighth grade 8 science are eligible for recommendation to Accelerated Chemistry in grade nine, as long as they enroll in Algebra 2 concurrently.
