PREFACE, Voici une petite grammaire qui est moins petite que je ne l'eusse voulu. Si je l'ai faite aussi grosse, 9'a ete pour rendre plus claires mes explications, et aussi afin qu'elle put etre employee par les eleves qui se preparent aux examens des colleges. J'ai confiance que ceux qui l'auront etudiee pourront subir avec succes cette epreuve, pourvu que les examinateurs eux-m^mes connaissent assez la langue fran9aise pour e^tre serieux daus les questions qu'ils posent. Cette grammaire embrasse tout le sujet traite dans la Gram- maire frangaise pour les Anglais. Cependant, je me suis efforce d'etre assez simple dans mon style pour etre compris de tous, meme de ceux-la qui sont peu avances dans l'etude du fran- 9ais, ou qui sont encore trop jeunes pour entendre rien a la philosophic d'une langue. Dans ce but, des exercices nom- breux ont ete mis dans le livre a cote des regies, et parmi ces exercices on trouvera un certain nombre de phrases anglaises et de courts extraits des auteurs anglais, destines a etre tra- duits par les eleves. lis ont ete choisis avec le plus grand soin, en vue d'enseigner l'application des regies, et de les faire mieux comprendre et mieux retenir. Quand il les a trouvees bonnes, Fauteur n'a pas hesite a prendre a Chardenal les phrases de ses exercices. II saisit cette occasion pour recommander aux professeurs cet excellent livre, intitule : ChardenaVs French Exercises. Dans les classes peu avancees le professeur fera bien de passer ceux des exercices qui lui paraissent trop difficiles. v vi PREFACE. La traduction de l'anglais dans le francais est line portion tres importante de notre enseignement, et nous la jugeons in- dispensable pour completer l'etude d'une langue etrangere. C'est en outre une forte gymnastisque intellectuelle, la plus puissante que je connaisse, et un merveilleux travail pour ins- pirer a l'eleve une haute idee des deux langues qu'il met en presence, et qu'il compare dans leurs moyens de rendre la pensee humaine. Mais pour que cette gymnastique soit vrai- ment forte et efficace, il faut que le professeur lui-meme soit maitre des deux langues, et qu'il exige que le francais de ses eleves rende l'anglais precisement, sans addition, sans retran- chement, sans alteration aucune de la pensee originale. Afin d'encourager les professeurs a faire dans leurs classes ce travail de traduction, on a mis a la fin de cette grammaire le premier acte de La Dame de Lyon (The Lady of Lyons), et un chapitre des Aventures d" Alice dans le pays des merveilles (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland). On trouvera ces pas- sages traduits dans le Corrige des exereiees qui accompagne ce livre. Certaines parties de la grammaire, le subjonctif, l'emploi des temps, l'article et le participe, sont traitees plus complete- ment dans les Entretiens sur la Grammaire et dans la Gram- maire frangaise pour les Anglais. Jerecommande aux profes- seurs d'avoir ces deux livres dans leur cabinet d'etude et de les consulter tres frequemment. Qu'on me permette de mettre ici encore la lettre que m'a ecrite M. Monsieur: J'ai recu vos deux volumes, Entretiens sur la Grammaire et Causeries avec mes eleves. Je vous en remercie. J'en ai pris connaissance avec inter£t. Je suis d'accord avec vous sur l'utilite d'apprendre la langue d'abord, et de ne venir a la grammaire que subsequemment. Par ce procede, la grammaire cesse d'etre une abstraction difficile a concevoir, difficile a appliquer. Mise a sa place, elle devient a la fois plus facile, plus lumineuse et plus feconde. La methode de s'appuyer plus sur les bons ecrivains que sur les grammairiens me parait digne de tout eloge. II est vrai qu'en ceci je ne puis etre que partial ; car c'est cette me- thode que j'ai suivie dans mon Dictionnaire de la langue Vos chapitres sur le participe passe et sur le subjonctif ont attire particulierement mon attention. Vous avez beaucoup facilite la theorie et la pratique du premier. Quant au second, qui comporte tant de nuances, vous 6tes un guide excellent pour toutes ces delicatesses de langage. Dans ce qu'on lit, vous trouverez naturel que Ton cherche son profit particulier. Ce profit particulier a ete pour moi dans une serie d'observations et de discussions auxquelles vous avez ete conduit en examinaut certains articles de mon Dic- tionnaire. Je ne hais pas de me voir critique quand la cri- tique est fructueuse. Je suis bien vieux, et ne puis songer a aucun travail de revision ; mais mes successeurs, si j'en ai, fe- ront bien d'extraire de votre livre ce qui me concerne, afin de le discuter et de l'approprier. Jane has written of women doing many extraordinary things from running a wagon train to becoming a pho- tographer in the early days of photography. But this time Jane has written something entirely different. Barcelona Calling had a working title of Oprah Doesn’t Know My Name. Trademark issues required a different title, but the talk show maven is still a presence in the book. Annie Shaw is an author being published by a romance publisher. Understandably her publisher expects the books to follow the program, boy meets girl, boy gets girl (or vice versa).
