His verse play Schnauzer was recently published by Exot Books. A former director of the Unterberg Poetry Center of the 92nd Street Y in New York, he is chair of the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins and editor of the The Hopkins Review. He is currently at work on the biography of Anthony Hecht. 3-DAY CRITICAL SEMINAR ON AMERICAN MASTER ANTHONY HECHT WITH DAVID YEZZI Anthony Hecht (1923-2004) returned from combat in WW II devastated by the horrors he had seen. Soon after, he established a lifelong connection to Italy that began with a move to the island of Ischia (where he met W. H. Auden) and ended at the Bogliasco Foundation, near Genoa, where he wrote his final poems in 2004. A longtime professor of Shakespeare and a United Sates Poet Laureate, Hecht won the Pulitzer Prize for The Hard Hours in 1968. Possible areas of interest for seminar participants include Shakespeare, the Bible, war poetry, Post Traumatic Stress, the Holocaust, Renaissance poetry, twentieth-century poetry, Jewish studies, the New Criticism, dramatic poetry, and W. H. Auden. In addition to experiencing a high level of discourse on one of America’s most important poetic voices, participants will present brief papers on an individual Hecht poem or on an aspect of Hecht’s life and work. The example of Dylan Thomas to the contrary notwithstanding, the life of a modern poet is not supposed to be dramatic, exciting, full of unexpected detours and flamboyant adventures. Take a look at the contributors' notes of a poetry anthology and you’ll see the typical profile: the poet has an MFA degree, teaches writing workshops at a university or college, has several publications, has gained some recognition, and lives with spouse plus a pet with a cute name in Tuscaloosa or Kalamazoo, or maybe Iowa City or Ann Arbor. How different from this paradigm is the life and career of Dana Gioia. After college at Stanford, Dana studied comparative literature at Harvard, picking up a master’s degree but deciding that the academic life was not for him. In 1975, he returned to Stanford to study business. With his MBA in hand he began working for General Foods in Rye Brook, NY, becoming a vice president of marketing, with responsibilities for such accounts as Jell-O and Kool-Aid.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.24197/ersjes.39.2018.255-280 Abstract: The aim of this paper is to look at American poet Mark Strand’s thinking about what poetry is all about, as expressed in his poetry collections and prose works, especially in The Monument (1978), a book of “notes, observations, rants, and revelations” about literary immortality, but also a meditation on “the translation of a self, and the text as self, the self as book”; in The Continuous Life (1990), a collection of luminous pieces on various aspects of the literary enterprise, including reading, translation and the multitude of selves making up the self; and in The Weather of Words: Poetic Invention (2000), a collection of insightful essays in which the poet discusses the essentials of poetry as something made by the human imagination, the meaning or content of a poem, and the creative process with the guidance of such preeminent minds as those of Carl Jung, Paul Valéry and Wallace Stevens.
