Vasconcelos Abstract One new subspecies of Sevenia amulia (Cramer, 1777) (Nymphalidae, Biblidinae) is described from Príncipe Island and compared with the previously known subspecies. Two faunistic novelties are reported from São Tomé Island and for the country: one species of Lycaenidae (Polyommatinae), another of Nymphalidae (Heliconiinae). The presence on Príncipe Island of another species, an endemic Hesperiidae (Hesperiinae) not reported from the country for almost a century, is confirmed and commented. BROWER2 and SÖREN NYLIN1 1Department of Zoology, Stockholm University, S-106 91 Stockholm, Sweden 2Department of Zoology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon 97331–2907, USA Received 10 January 2004; accepted for publication 12 November 2004 We infer for the first time the phylogenetic relationships of genera and tribes in the ecologically and evolutionarily well-studied subfamily Nymphalinae using DNA sequence data from three genes: 1450 bp of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) (in the mitochondrial genome), 1077 bp of elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-a) and 400–403 bp of wing- less (both in the nuclear genome). We explore the influence of each gene region on the support given to each node of the most parsimonious tree derived from a combined analysis of all three genes using Partitioned Bremer Support. We also explore the influence of assuming equal weights for all characters in the combined analysis by investigating the stability of clades to different transition/transversion weighting schemes. We find many strongly supported and stable clades in the Nymphalinae. We are also able to identify ‘rogue’ -

Temporal variation and phenology of tropical insect communities and the role of environmental factors controlling this variation is poorly understood. A better understanding is needed, for example, to predict the effects of climate change on tropical insect communities and to assess the long- term persistence of tropical communities. We studied seasonal and inter-annual variation in tropical fruit- feeding butterflies by exploiting a unique 137-month abundance time series of .100 species, sampled at 22 locations in the medium altitude montane rain forest of Kibale National Park, western Uganda. Precipitation peaked twice per year, about 20 d after each equinox. Vegetation greenness peaked approximately 33 d later. Species richness and abundance of butterflies peaked about 2 and 3 months, respectively, after the greenness peak. -

Site A represented a muddy flat with high water capacity while Site B represented a less muddy flat Department of Zoology and with low water capacity. The result showed that class Insecta was Department of Zoology and the most abundant group recording (71.2%), Crustacea (18.0%), Arachnida (7.6%), Diplopoda (2.0%), Environmental Biology, Symphyla (1.1%) and the least abundant was Chilopoda (0.1%).The study revealed a high distribution University of Calabar, P.M.B and abundance of arthropods in site. -

Abstract Background: Plant-feeding insects make up a large part of earth's total biodiversity. While it has been shown that herbivory has repeatedly led to increased diversification rates in insects, there has been no compelling explanation for how plant-feeding has promoted speciation rates. There is a growing awareness that ecological factors can lead to rapid diversification and, as one of the most prominent features of most insect-plant interactions, specialization onto a diverse resource has often been assumed to be the main process behind this diversification. However, specialization is mainly a pruning process, and is not able to actually generate diversity by itself. Here we investigate the role of host colonizations in generating insect diversity, by testing if insect speciation rate is correlated with resource diversity. -

Chapter 10 The Butterflies and Skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) of Angola: An Updated Checklist Luís F. Mendes, A. Bivar-de-Sousa, and Mark C. Williams Abstract Presently, 792 species/subspecies of butterflies and skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) are known from Angola, a country with a rich diversity of habitats, but where extensive areas remain unsurveyed and where systematic collecting pro- grammes have not been undertaken. Only three species were known from Angola in 1820. From the beginning of the twenty-first century, many new species have been described and more than 220 faunistic novelties have been assigned. As a whole, of the 792 taxa now listed for Angola, 57 species/subspecies are endemic and almost the same number are known to be near-endemics, shared by Angola and by one or another neighbouring country. The Nymphalidae are the most diverse family. The Lycaenidae and Papilionidae have the highest levels of endemism. A revised check- list with taxonomic and ecological notes is presented and the development of knowl- edge of the superfamily over time in Angola is analysed.
