Begrüssung der Gäste und Eric Stupp, Präsident, Schweizer Gesellschaft Eröffnung des Symposiums der Freunde des Weizmann Institute of Science Born in Padova, , Prof. Lia Addadi obtained her MSc degree in organic Welcome & OpeningRemarks Eric Stupp, Chairman, Swiss Society of chemistry at the Università degli Studi di Padova (1973) and earned a PhD in Friends of the Weizmann Institute of Science structural chemistry from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1979. After conducting postdoctoral studies at the Weizmann Institute and at Harvard University, she joined the faculty of Weizmann’s Department of Structural Chemistry (now the Department of Structural Biology) in 1982. Prof. Addadi served as Head of the Department of Structural Biology (1994-2001) and as Dean of the 2019 Dr. Bessie Lawrence Kurzer Bericht eines Summer Camp Schülers Faculty of Chemistry (2001-2004). In 2008 she became Dean of the Feinberg International Summer Short report by a Summer Camp student Graduate School, a position she held until 2014. In October 2018, she became the Science Institute (ISSI) President’s Advisor for Advancing Women in Science. She is the incumbent of the Dorothy and Patrick E. Gorman Chair. Prof. Addadi pursues a broad range of research interests that relate to crystals and biological interfaces. She studies mineralization in biological systems, with a particular interest in crystallizations that have either a physiological function or BIOMINERALIZATION: HUNDREDS OF MILLION YEAR’S FUTURISTIC are related to disease in a wide variety of organisms, including humans. She has TECHNOLOGIES AND PATHOLOGIES investigated biological processes such as cell adhesion and the interactions of antibodies with structured surfaces. Her work may further the understanding of such disorders as osteoporosis, , and kidney stone formation. Her Prof. Lia Addadi Vortrag (auf Englisch) research on biomineralization, undertaken in conjunction with departmental Lecture (in English) Department of Structural Biology colleague Prof. Steve Weiner, may also lead to the development of new ways to Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel produce composite materials for advanced technologies in mechanics, optics, or electronics. She is the recipient of numerous prizes and honors, including the 2011 Aminoff Prize for Crystallography by the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, the 2009 Prize for Excellence from the Israel Chemical Society, the 2006 Kolthoff Prize in Schlussworte Chemistry from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, the Spiers Medal of Eric Stupp Closing Remarks the Royal Society of Chemistry (2007), and the Prelog Medal in Stereochemistry from the Federal Polytechnic Institute (ETH) in Zurich (1998). In 2017, she was elected as a foreign member to the U.S National Academy of Sciences. Prof. Addadi and her husband Ruben have two children, Yael and Sefi, and seven Apéro / Refreshments Lichthof - UniversitätZürich grandchildren. She loves art and is a voracious reader.
