God’s reckoning upon a wayward world For years, Israel has had to live with existential threats from Iran and its neighbors, yet hardly anyone has done anything about it. The world seems to take for granted that Israel must live with such threats without ever doing anything about it either. Imagine what would happen if Russia, or China, made such threats to America, or vice versa. A few years ago, when the media went into another one of those cyclical frenzies with the notion that Israel was about to attack Iran and destroy that nation’s nuclear facilities before it developed nuclear weapons, we said that according to biblical prophecies it is Iran who will attack Israel, not the other way around. Our prediction has proven true. In February 2012, Iran attacked a number of Israeli missions abroad – in Georgia, India, and Thailand, to mention those that made it into the media. From there, attacking Israel itself is only a short step away. Iran has shown that its threats to Israel are not mere talk; that it is prepared to act on them. This has changed the name of the game. Israel is now entitled to reply and take action before a greater disaster hits the nation. This is not going to make Israel many friends. On the contrary, biblical prophecies tell us that this tiny nation will face the wrath of the entire world. We have said much about those prophecies in the past, and may yet say more in the future, God willing, but for now we will only post this prophecy as a reminder.

And isn’t this what the term “to acknowledge” means with its simultaneous reference to knowledge itself, to a recognition of receipt, and to an expression of indebtedness and gratitude? With regard to this book, which at some level is a book like any other, I do not want to lose sight of the extent to which any knowledge it seems to profess needs to be embedded within an unequivocal act of ac- knowledgment that, beyond being a mere formality, is in fact a call to rethink what we imagine knowledge to be.

  • “Sex Abuse, the Catholic Church, & the Media” George Weigel Ethics
ABRIDGED TRANSCRIPT “Sex Abuse, the Catholic Church, & the Media” George Weigel Ethics and Public Policy Center John L. Allen, Jr. National Catholic Reporter November 2010 MICHAEL CROMARTIE: Welcome. George Weigel is Distinguished Senior Fellow and a colleague of mine at Ethics and Public Policy Center. He’s written a definitive book on Pope John Paul II, but now he’s got a new book out called The End and the Beginning: John Paul II — The Victory of Freedom, the Last Years, the Legacy. George, we’re delighted to have you. GEORGE WEIGEL: Thank you, Mike, and good morning, everyone. My role today is to raise questions about the way in which sexual abuse by the Catholic clergy was and is covered and to suggest some possible new angles of exploration for the future. This is, of course, a complicated story. Eight years ago in this little book during the Long Lent of 2002, I insisted that “it was a serious mistake for some Catholic leaders and some Catholic traditionalists to argue that the crisis of sexual abuse was created by a media frenzy. It was not. The crisis was and is,” I wrote, “the Church’s crisis.” Moreover, the Church owed the press a debt of gratitude for “forcing to the surface issues that have for far too long been ignored or downplayed by the Church’s American leadership.” I meant that then and I would mean it now with reference to eight years ago. To be sure that praise in 2002 was not unqualified, some things were gotten wrong.

1. • How Is Contemporary English Spiritual and Religious Identity Constructed and Reconstructed by Performance?
How is contemporary English spiritual and religious identity constructed and reconstructed by performance? Submitted by Sarah Joanne Goldingay, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Drama, April 2010. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (signature) ......................................................................................... Goldingay | 550026153 1 Abstract The relationship between theatrical performance and religion in Western culture has always been complex and often troubled; and yet at points of encounter each provides fertile ground for exploring questions about how our religious and spiritual identity is constructed through society. This is particularly true of England today. The arrival of the 21st century seems to have heralded a renewed interest in questions surrounding religious practice and spiritual seeking. When debates about the nature and implications of religious belief are so high on the cultural agenda, performance inevitably becomes a public site of these debates. This is reflected in the academy, and while sociologists of religion have become increasingly aware of the 'performative' aspects of religious practices, contemporary performance practitioners and theorists have become more concerned with questions of religion, spirituality and the sacred. This thesis acknowledges both aspects of this nexus. It contextualises these manifestations in popular culture through recent scholarship from the sociology of religion, and uses frameworks and discourse from performance scholarship to consider the implications of psychophysical practice on performative identity construction.

  • The Pope Meets the Press: Media Coverage of the Clergy Abuse Scandal
The Pope Meets the Press: Media Coverage of the Clergy Abuse Scandal June 11, 2010 Newspaper coverage of the Catholic clergy sexual abuse scandal grew more intense this spring than at any time since 2002, and European newspapers devoted even more ink to the story than American papers did, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center. The heavy coverage in Europe was a reversal of the pattern in 2002, when a Boston Globe series triggered an avalanche of reporting on sexual abuse by priests in the United States but relatively few stories appeared in the European press. In early 2010, by contrast, much of the reporting focused on sexual abuse of children in Europe, and English-language European newspapers published three times as many articles on the scandal as U.S. papers did, the new study finds. In addition, the media scrutiny this year zeroed in on the pope himself. During the six-week period from March 12 through April 27, Pope Benedict XVI was a major focus of more than half the stories on the scandal in the mainstream U.S. media, including print, radio, network television, cable TV and online news sources. These are among the key findings of the study, conducted jointly by the Project for Excellence in Journalism and the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, both of which belong to the nonprofit, nonpartisan Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C. The amount of coverage devoted to the pope may not be unusual, given his role in the church and the media‟s tendency to focus coverage of scandals on individuals rather than institutions.

For those of you who are new, you may want to know how we select our topics. You’ll see in that little brochure in your pamphlet on the Faith Angle Forum we have eight advisors to this program. They are: E.J. Dionne, Carl Cannon, Frank Foer, Michael Gerson, Ross Douthat, David Brooks, Jeffrey Goldberg, and Barbara Bradley Hagerty. We meet twice a year, and we talk about topics that would be of interest to you at the intersection of religion and public life and that is something that is in the news that you’re wanting to know more about. We try to get the best speakers on those topics. That’s how we arrived at this. This is all being recorded. Everything will be on the record except when someone asks for it to be off the record. But we do like to transcribe these and put them up on our Website. People do read them, and they’re wonderfully rich conversations. Now, our first topic. We have two of the best people on this subject in the world. They have written books about it, but also when we asked around who would be the best people to speak on this subject, the first two people I went to are these two right here. They said yes, and we’re delighted. As you know, George Weigel is Distinguished Senior Fellow and a colleague of mine at Ethics and Public Policy Center.

  • Bbc Reports on Sexual Abuse: from Jimmy Savile to the Catholic Church
BBC REPORTS ON SEXUAL ABUSE: FROM JIMMY SAVILE TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Bill Donohue President Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights 450 Seventh Avenue New York, NY 10123 2016 www.catholicleague.org © Copyright 2016 by The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights Overview The Dame Janet Smith Review Report on BBC serial rapist Jimmy Savile has many strengths and weaknesses. Her greatest strength is her ability to understand the sociological underpinnings of Savile's predatory behavior and the reasons why his conduct was not taken seriously at work. What makes this particularly commendable is that her training is in law, not social science: she is a former judge. Smith's greatest weakness is her readiness to exculpate the BBC hierarchy: she wants us to believe that no one in a senior management position ever knew anything about Savile's sexual offenses. What makes this so remarkable is Savile's long history of abuse: he worked at the organization for more than 25 years—molesting some of his victims on the premises of the BBC—and he bragged about his exploits in public. To come to this conclusion, Smith sets the evidentiary bar quite high. A less legalistic examination would not have been so forgiving. The report was three years in the making and it runs more than 700 pages. By any measure, Jimmy Savile was one of the most beastly sexual abusers in recent history. Predictably, he showed no remorse. If anything, he was in perpetual denial, claiming how awful it was for someone to force himself on someone else.
