Israel: a Concise History of a Nation Reborn
Israel: A Concise History of a Nation Reborn SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER READING A book like Israel: A Concise History of a Nation Reborn, by definition covers Israel’s history from a bird’s-eye view. Every event, issue, and personality discussed in these pages has been the subject of much investigation and writing. There are many wonderful books that, by focusing on subjects much more specific, are able to examine the issues the issues covered in this book in much greater detail. The following are my rather idiosyncratic recommendations for a few that will be of interest to the general reader interested in delving more deeply into some of the issues raised in this book. There are many other superb books, not listed here, equally worth reading. I would be pleased to receive your recommendations for works to consider adding. Please feel free to click on the “Contact” button on my website to be in touch. Introduction: A Grand Human Story • Gilbert, Martin. Israel: A History. Adler-Rudel's Visits to Sweden1
1 Adler-Rudel's visits to Sweden1 C.G.McKAY While Raoul Wallenberg's detention by the Soviet organs and his final fate in Russian hands still remain matters for speculation , there has, by contrast, been a steady and useful accumulation of material disgorged from non-Russian archives casting new light on the broader context of his mission to Budapest . This has been valuable because the mission itself- and not just its aftermath – is worthy of careful historical study. The present essay is to be seen essentially as a contribution to an ongoing process of contextualization – that is to say, placing the mission in context . In particular , it aims at improving understanding of some of the preliminary work paving the way for the Swede's eventual dispatch to Hungary in mid-1944. In a year devoted to celebrating Raoul Wallenberg's individual contribution to rescue efforts, it is easy to lose sight of a familiar truth: most of what is worthwhile in life is not the product of a moment and the work of a single person. Rather it is something which is embedded in a historical process and depends on the efforts – not always successful - of many different people with different skills. 1. A Jewish Visitor from Britain On 24 February 1943, an unusual visitor flew into Sweden from Britain. As he was to recall later, For more than three years no representative of a foreign Jewish organisation had visited Stockholm and my arrival created something of a stir. The visitor's name was Solomon Adler-Rudel 1 © C.G.McKay . -

Ilona Duczynska meets Ervin Szabo: The making of a revolutionary personality — from theory to terrorism, April-May 1917 Kenneth McRobbie "I'm not against bombs. Not all bombs are bad..." Ilona Duczynska (1969)1 The Unknown City Ilona Duczynska (1897-1978),2 born near Vienna and a resident of Cana- da after 1950, has been called one of Hungary's outstanding revolutionary personalities.3 In the first part of what was to have been an auto- biography,4 she describes, with no little satisfaction, how her "rebellious" nature developed in opposition to her mother's Hungarian gentry family, and then outlines how it became truly revolutionary under the impact of the momentous events of March 1917. Duczynska was just twenty in the late spring of 1917 when she was privileged to spend several weeks in the company of Ervin Szabo (1877-1918). Through Hungary's leading social- ist theoretician, she became exposed, as never before or since, to ques- tions of ideology, and the variety of the conflicting currents of socialist theory. These made little impression, however. What did leave a perma- nent mark were two things that spoke most directly to her nature: Szabo's emphasis upon the importance of the critically thinking individual, and the imperative of action. Duczynska considered herself a socialist, on the basis of her reading, since the age of fifteen. Certainly, she was not uncri- tical5 of the early betrayals of the principles of peace and proletarian internationalism after 1914 by social democratic parties, nor later of the infinitely greater betrayals of Marx's moral injunctions by national com- munist parties and the degenerate Soviet system. -

HU ISSN 1588-9025 BUSINESS STUDIES A Publication of the University of Miskolc VOLUME 7, NUMBER 2. (2010) MISKOLC UNIVERSITY PRESS Editorial board: Sandor KARAJZ: Editor in Chief Institute of Economic Theories Tibor PAL Institute of Business Information and Methods György KOCZISZKY Institute of European Economics István PISKÓTI Institute of Marketing Mária ILLÉS Institute of Business Science Istvan SZINTAY Institute of Management Science E-mail: [email protected] University of Miskolc Faculty of Economics DEDICATION The economic crisis made the practitioners of economics face facts that can hardly be disregarded. It has become clear that new theories are needed to replace the ones prevailing so far. The belief in the autocracy of markets has failed, and the views on the monetary markets have to be grounded in new foundations. In this way the crisis affects not only our everyday lives, but the economic theoretical foundations as well. The neoclassical theory prevailing in the past three decades attracts more and more criticism. More and more experts voice the opinion that the current crisis is not only a consequence of the incompetence of greedy bankers and irresponsible politicians, but the theories on the basis of which the decisions were made are also to be blamed. Education in economics and in the theory of economics faces a change of paradigm. Therefore the responsibility of academics and researchers preparing the economic experts of the future for their tasks is not small. It is not inconsequential what approach and way of critical thinking they leave as inheritance to future generations. The Faculty of Economics of the University of Miskolc wishes to be involved in the change of paradigm to an extent commensurate with its weight, modest though it may be. -

A Reply to Ian Lustick's Article
Cont Jewry (2017) 37:171–181 DOI 10.1007/s12397-017-9213-x A Reply to Ian Lustick’s Article Editor’s Note: This Comment is a Response to Ian Lustick’s Article in This Issue of Contemporary Jewry v37(1) 1 2 Dan Michman • Sergio DellaPergola • 3 1 Paul Burstein • Adam S. Ferziger Received: 4 March 2017 / Accepted: 15 March 2017 / Published online: 24 April 2017 Ó Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2017 According to Ian Lustick, Israel has built and, in turn, is dominated by an overemphasized Holocaust ethos that he calls ‘‘Holocaustia.’’ To be sure, his extensive essay describes three other distinct Holocaust narratives that emerged in the course of Israel’s history. But the central focus of the article is on this fourth one, its assumed domination of contemporary Israeli discourse, and its implications for the Israel-Arab conflict. As Lustick argues: Contemporary Israel is marked unmistakably with ‘‘Holocaustia,’’ by which I mean a universe of discourse based on the centrality in Jewish life of the Holocaust, its effects, and memories of it. The result, opines Lustick, is distortions and severe limits placed on the ability of Israeli society and Israeli leaders to exploit or even perceive opportunities for moving toward mutually advantageous arrangements with their neighbors. & Sergio DellaPergola [email protected] Dan Michman [email protected] Paul Burstein [email protected] Adam S. Ferziger [email protected] 1 Ramat-Gan, Israel 2 Jerusalem, Israel 3 Seattle, Washington, USA 123 172 D. Michman et al. The ongoing dominance of Holocaustia, moreover, may eventuate the demise of the Jewish polity itself. -
