Match background

ACF Fiorentina will look to improve an unedifying record against Primera División opposition as they seek a first win on Spanish soil against Villarreal CF in Group C.

• The two sides have never met in European competition.

• Villarreal have played nine games against Italian opposition, winning four, drawing two and losing three. All four of those victories have come in home games and with three 2-0s and a 1-0, they have yet to concede a goal at home against a side.

• Fiorentina have played eleven games against Spanish sides, winning two, drawing three and losing six. Three of those games have been major European finals. They lost 2-0 to Real CF in the 1956/57 European Champion Clubs' Cup and then met Club Atlético de Madrid in the 1961/62 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, drawing 1-1 and then losing 3-0 on a replay.

• Fiorentina's record in Spain is not impressive. Of their five fixtures in Villarreal's home nation they have drawn one and lost four.

• Fiorentina have not won an away game in since beating Arsenal FC in the first group stage of the 1999/00 UEFA Champions League. Their last UEFA Cup away win was a 2-0 against Grasshopper-Club in the second round of the 1998/99 competition.

• Villarreal's French and Fiorentina's young striker Arturo Lupoli were team-mates at Arsenal FC in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons. However, Lupoli made no league appearances during the the first of these campaigns when Arsenal finished second in the .

• Villarreal's Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi has recent Serie A experience having spent much of last season on loan at FC. Danish striker also saw plenty of action in in three seasons at AC Milan between 2002 and 2004.

• Fiorentina defender Alessandro Potenza has experience of Spanish football after spending the 2005/06 season on loan at RCD Mallorca. Veteran striker Christian Vieri also played in the Primera División with Club Atlético de Madrid in the 1997/98 season, scoring 24 goals in 24 league games.

ACF Fiorentina UEFA club competition milestones • Victory in the 1960/61 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final remains Fiorentina’s crowning European achievement but they have reached three other continental finals, losing all. They triumphed 2-0 away and 2-1 at home against Rangers FC to take the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup trophy, having lost out to Real Madrid CF (2-0) in the European Champion Clubs' Cup showpiece four years earlier. They failed to defend their title as Club Atlético de Madrid beat them 4-1 on aggregate in the final 12 months later. They also lost to Juventus in the 1989/90 UEFA Cup final.

UEFA Cup milestones • A 3-1 defeat by Juve in the first leg of the 1989/90 UEFA Cup final put a major dampener on Fiorentina's biggest achievement in the competition, and a 0-0 draw in the return confirmed their downfall.

Competition information

The UEFA Cup grew out of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and was first held in 1971/72. The UEFA Cup is open to the holders, the teams finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top flights, the winners of national cup competitions, the winners of the League Cup in certain countries, the eleven winners of the final matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, three clubs from UEFA's Fair Play League and 16 clubs eliminated from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The eight third-placed clubs at the end of the UEFA Champions League group stage drop into the UEFA Cup, in time for the tournament's knockout phase.

• Format: If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of all the group matches, the following criteria will be applied to determine the rankings: a) superior goal difference from all group matches played; b) higher number of goals scored; c) higher number of goals scored away; d) higher number of wins; e) higher number of away wins; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from 2007/08, at least six places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2006/07 the number of locally-trained players required began at four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Competition format: Two qualifying rounds produce a first round of 80 teams who play over two legs to find the 40 clubs that make up the group stage. This phase comprises eight groups of five, with each side playing four games, two at home and two away. The winners, runners-up and third-placed teams from each section advance to the last 32 where they are joined by the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. Here, the traditional two-match knockout format resumes, until the final. The dates for the games are as follows: the Round of 32 takes place on 13/14 and 21 February; Round of 16 on 6 and 12/13 March; quarter-finals on 3 and 10 April; semi-finals on 24 April and 1 May. The 2007/08 UEFA Cup final will be held at the City of Manchester Stadium on 14 May.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Cup matches from the start of the Round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February at the latest. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Cup this season.
