On behalf of the Secretary-General, I would like to thank you for your letter dated 18 July 2006, inviting him to join you in Montreal on 30 November 2006 to deliver an address in tribute to His Excellency Mr. Paul Martin, former Prime Minister of Canada.
The Secretary-General is honoured by your invitation to take part in this event. As you know, the Secretary-General holds Mr. Martin in high esteem, and he is pleased to see that he is being given this tribute for his work for Canada both at home and abroad. I regret to inform you, however, that the Secretary-General will be unable to attend owing to the pressures on his schedule in the last quarter of his term in office.

On die night of November 30, 2006, over five thousand friends and colleagues of the Right Honourable / Paul Martin will come togcdicr in Montreal, Quebec, to pay tribute to a remarkable life in Canadian politics.
From a childhood spent running dirough the halls of the House of Commons, to international success in die business world and, finally, to a distinguished decade as Canada's Finance Minister and then Prime Minister, Paul Martin's achievements reflect a life of service and commitment. His time in public office saw rbc nation's return to economic prosperity and expansion of its strong social foundations.
As Canadians, we arc especially proud of his efforts lo add to our country's long tradition of multilateral activism and assisting die world's poor. As Finance Minister he led the charge in promoting debt relief to Heavily Indebted Poor Countries and founded the creation of G-20 Finance Ministers. As Prime Minister, he became a tireless advocate of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, acted to help those in Haiti and Sudan among odiers and in every respect, furdicrcd Canada's robust vision of a belter world.
We arc writing today to «sk for your participation in paying tribute to Mi. Murlin and his legacy. Youi March 2004 visit to Canada marked the first international visit during Mr. Martin's tenure as Prirnc Minister- It is our great hope diat you might visit once again to be pan of our evening recognizing Paul Martin's contribution. By addressing our audience you would once again be speaking to the whole of the nation as the evening will be televised nationally. Moreover, you will be die only international guest who will appear at the Tribute to speak in person.
