"What time is it? " is the rallying cry from funk and R&B group Morris Day & The Time. Established by in 1981 , The Time honed an outrageous, theatrical stage act in and released the ground breaking funk The Time ( 1981 ), What Time Is It? ( 1982), ( 1984), and Pandemonium (1990). Their records spawned a string of hit dance singles in the 80's-including "," "Cool," "Jungle Love," "777-9311," and the song that created a dance of the same name, "The Bird." Led by flamboyant frontman Morris Day, The Time's infectious, multi-layered concerts are a unique musical experience that includes comical skits, Zoot-suits, and dance routines. The Time' s music, along with Morris Day' s antics with colleague , were featured in the classic cult film Purple Rain. Their latest It's About Time was released in 2004-a year which also saw the band open for Prince on select dates of his "Musicology" tour.

The show opens with the old-school soul of Brooklyn's own Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. Smoky-voiced Sharon Jones honed her vocal skills in the church. As a teenager she moved with her family from Augusta, to Brooklyn, NY, and found herself doing back-up vocals for gospel, soul, and blues artists. She teamed with the Dap-Kings-the formidable house band for Brooklyn-based funk and soul label , led by bassist and producer -and they released 2002's Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. After extensive worldwide touring, the band released its most recent album, Naturally, in 2005. According to The Houston Press, the album captures the "analog swing classic of funk and the pop-minded soul of vintage ." The Austin Chronicle says of the band: "Brooklyn took it, placed it in the trusty hand of Bosco Mann, and the funk has been better for it ever since."

A special screening of Purple Rain will be shown in the BAM Rose Cinemas following the concert. In the movie Prince plays "The Kid", a cynical, struggling at the First A venue, a popular club in Minneapolis. His career is suffering when a young singing hopeful (Apollonia Kotero) arrives at the club in search of her own fame. Their blossoming relationship is short lived when she accepts an offer from Morris Day, the Kid 's club competition. The screening will take place on Saturday Jan 28 at 11 pm. Tickets for this screening are $8 for concert ticket holders, $10 for non-ticket holders and can be purchased by calling BAM Ticket Services at 718.636.4100 or visiting www.bam.org.
