The Blues Society of Omaha, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 1998. We are an all-volunteer organization with over 800 dues-paying members. BSO’s mission is “Keepin’ the Blues Alive”. We are recognized as one of the top Blues Societies in the country. With the help of your tax-deductible donation we continue to promote blues music, blues musicians, and live music venues & events. Among our many projects and accomplishments are these: • BSO promotes musicians and venues by maintaining a comprehensive live music calendar on our website, omahablues.com. BSO also distributes free monthly news flyers with calendars to numerous public gathering spots to inform the general community of live music shows in the area. • BluesEd is a non-profit youth artist development program created and sponsored by Blues Society of Omaha. The BluesEd program began in 2001 to provide opportunities for young musicians to learn blues music in a series of workshops and to play with other students in a band format. Our BluesEd bands always are impressive and they have performed at some of the finest festivals & venues in and around Omaha. • The Blues Society of Omaha has hosted an annual Nebraska Blues Challenge competition for local bands since 2011. All of the participating bands are showcased in judged public events as they compete for a package of prizes and the honor of representing BSO at the International Blues Challenge competition held in Memphis. All of the winning Nebraska bands have gone on to receive national attention and acclaim while making BSO proud! • BSO produces and/or sponsors various music events throughout the year. • BSO is a contributor to and supporter of Playing With Fire, a series of free outdoor concerts held each summer in Omaha since 2004. • BSO provides support to The Zoo Bar, Lincoln’s legendary and award-winning blues venue. BSO is a sponsor of the annual ZooFest music festival. • In conjunction with Toy Drive for Pine Ridge, BSO hosts an annual toy drive and concert fundraiser for the children of Pine Ridge Reservation. • BSO regularly produces charitable events for musicians in need. As a member and donor, you are entitled to great membership benefits: • Free subscription to “Blues Notes”, our monthly newsletter that will keep you abreast of blues events in the area, blues CD reviews, and other articles of interest to blues connoisseurs! • E-blasts with late-breaking blues news. • Special pre-sale and discounted tickets to select events. • Discounts offered by generous local businesses. • Pride in belonging to a group dedicated to “Keepin’ The Blues Alive”! • Tribute to Three Giants Figures of the Sixties' Pop
TRIBUTE TO THREE GIANTS FIGURES OF THE SIXTIES’ POP MUSIC IN THE 50th ANNIVERSAIRE OF THEIR DEATH. ALAN WILSON, JIMI HENDRIX AND JANIS JOPLIN: ASTROLOGICAL REVIEW OF THREE 27’ CLUB MEMBERS. We were at the end of the “sixties”, a remarkable decade of 20th century for popular music, revolutionary movements, technological achievements and radical changes in human relationships. It was also the time of “hippie liberation”, the spread of drugs through young people. Everything was fine when, just in the span of thirty days, three outstanding members of musical background suddenly died. 1970, September the 3th: Alan Wilson, “Canned Heat” guitar, harmonica and vocal, commit suicide at home of another member group, Bob Hite, in Topanga Canyon, California. An overdose was the cause of his death. He was 27 years old. 1970, September the 18th: Jimi Hendrix, one of the bests guitarrist of all times, share his last night with Monica Dannemann in Samarkand Hotel, London. When she woke up Jimi was inconscious, yet breathe. He was moved at St. Mary Abbot Hospital, but he was not alive. The cause of his death: asphyxia per vomit. His partner declared that Jimi had had seven tablets of Vesparax, a barbituric, say, 18 times the recommended dose. He was 27 years old. 1970, October the 4th: Janis Joplin, a singer and contraculture icon of the sixties was found dead in her hotel room, at Los Angeles, just when she was going to record the vocal part of Buried Alive in the Blues next morning. A portent, maybe a synchronicity. The official cause of her death was an heroine overdose, probably combined with alcohol effects.

  • Blues Tour De Forst
    | 1 Monday, June 22, 2020 Blues Tour de Forst It’s June 2008. Tom Forst, a regional vice president at Cox Communications Group, is about to walk away from 25 years as a corporate suit to chase a lifelong passion. The dream to be a full-time musician had been on hold since his post-college touring days, circa 1974. It’s June 2008. Tom Forst, a regional vice president at Cox Communications Group, is about to walk away from 25 years as a corporate suit to chase a lifelong passion. The dream to be a full-time musician had been on hold since his post-college touring days, circa 1974. He recalls the exact moment his life changed course. “My wife was sitting in the living room. She pays the bills, and she said, ‘Look at that, I’m paying our last two $30,000 college tuition bills for our last two kids.’ I looked at her and said, ‘I’m going to quit.’” “My wife simply said, ‘Go ahead,’ and that’s kind of the way she is. Her attitude was, what’s the worst that can happen?” She only wanted assurances they wouldn’t starve. © 2021 CAPTRUST Financial Advisors Blues Tour de Forst | 1 | 2 So Forst, then 57, gave his six-month notice at Cox Communications. At the end of that year, he stepped away from legions of direct reports, the jet-setting lifestyle, power, prestige, and pay. Big pay. What followed is a wild ride of a second act—from boardroom to bandstand, Forst was on his way to be a successful indie blues musician.

  • North Mississippi Allstars: up and Rolling
North Mississippi Allstars: Up and Rolling A forgotten roll of film inspired a musical accompaniment, the North Mississippi Allstars’ new record Up and Rolling. Shot before the turn of the century, the photographs resonate with the music of four families from the Mississippi hills. The album captures the communal spirit upon which the band was founded. In 1996, a photographer from Texas, Wyatt McSpadden, traveled to North Mississippi looking to photograph local musicians. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson had grown up just south of Memphis and cut their teeth playing experimental rock & roll together, as well as the roots repertoire pioneered by their father, Jim Dickinson, a legendary producer (Big Star, the Replacements) and session player (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan). Their feet were firmly planted in the North Mississippi mud and music scene, and they were excited to show Wyatt around their community, to introduce him to the musical families of Otha Turner, RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Their first stop was Otha Turner’s farm.
