Given the relative youth of the discipline, performance studies has remained steadfast in delimiting its objects as those that are live—shared air performance—and not bound by textuality; only recently has the discipline considered the mediated, but still solely within the circumscription of shared air performance. The cinema, as cultural object, permeates our lives—it is pervasive and ubiquitous—it sets the bar for quality acting, and shapes our expectations and ideologies. The cinema, and the cinematic text, is a complex performance whose individual components combine to produce a sum greater than the total of its parts. The cinema itself is a performance—not just the acting—participating in a cultural dialogue, continually reshaping and challenging notions of liveness, made more urgent with the ever-increasing use of digital technologies that seem to further segregate what is generally considered real performance from the final, constructed cinematic text.

Quantity: 2.25 linear feet Location: Brooklyn Collection Map Room, cabinet 11 Repository: Brooklyn Public Library – Brooklyn Collection Reference Code: BC0071 Scope and Content Note The 800 items in the Brooklyn Theater Playbills and Programs Collection, which occupies 2.25 cubic feet, easily refute the stereotypes of Brooklyn as provincial and insular. From the late 1880s until the 1940s, the period covered by the bulk of these materials, the performing arts thrived in Brooklyn and were available to residents right at their doorsteps. At one point, there were over 200 theaters in Brooklyn. Frequented by the rich, the middle class and the working poor, they enjoyed mass popularity. With materials from 115 different theaters, the collection spans almost a century, from 1875 to 1972. The highest concentration is in the years 1890 to 1909, with approximately 450 items.

The foundation educates young people with The Story of Movies, its groundbreaking interdisciplinary curriculum that has taught visual literacy to over 10 million US students. Oder: Ein kleines Kapitel Kinogeschichte als Beziehungsgeschichte Vorüberlegungen Es gibt Plots (oder fabulas), die man ,urtümlich‘ nennen kann, weil das ihnen zugrundeliegende Verhaltensmuster anscheinend mit der Ins- tinktstruktur des Menschen korrespondiert und deshalb weitgehend un- abhängig von einer konkreten Kultur bzw. vom Grad der Vertrautheit mit ihr (die man gemeinhin ,Bildung‘ nennt) verstehbar ist. Etwa der- art: Ein Eindringling stört das Zusammenleben einer Gruppe. Oder: Ein Männchen tritt mit einem anderen in Konkurrenz um ein Weibchen. Die kulturelle Prägung findet sich in den Aspekten, die aus der Grundkons- tellation eine konkrete Geschichte machen, wenn z. B. die Sympathien auf die Akteure verteilt und Lösungen angeboten werden. Weil – so darf man annehmen – der junge Graf Almaviva, der in Rossinis Oper Il barbiere di Sevilla (1816) dem alten Dr. Bartolo sein Mündel Rosina abjagt, ein sym- pathischer Mann ist, sind die Zuschauer damit einverstanden und freuen sich mit ihm, dass er aus der Konkurrenz der Männchen (jung vs. alt) um das Weibchen (jung) als Sieger hervorgeht. Geschichten wie diese sind geeignet, Sympathien zu lenken und Solidarisierungen zu bewirken. Wegen der Allgemeinverständlichkeit des Konflikts sind solche urtümlichen Konstellationen gern verwendete Stoffe für populäre Genres wie etwa die Oper (im 19. Jahrhundert) oder den Film (im 20. Jahrhundert).
