Plus 38 Where, a Game for Arizona The Finger Rock Canyon drainage is located in the front range of the Santa Catalina Plant Nuts Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona. My study area, shown in Figure 1, is approximately 1,100 acres and constitutes about 0.06% of the mountain range. It is remarkable that about 45% of the known taxa of the Santa Catalina Mountains (Verrier 2018) are found in this small area. I monitor the 599 gymnosperms and angiosperms, plus 222 vertebrate taxa, recording species diversity by trail mile. Looking for vertebrates actually helps me see tiny flowers because as I keep changing my focus, I see more. A database record is a taxon (in “flower” for plants) on a mile and on a date. Each record may represent a single flower or vertebrate of a given species. Viable pollen (on anthers for angiosperms or airborne in the case of gymnosperms) is the Figure 1. The database currently includes Theresa Crimmins based on data supplied by the author. 181,213 flowering records and 82,610 vertebrate records, collected during 1,713 surveys. A more detailed description of the study area, methodology, and flora may be found in Bertelsen (2018). Area Climate Absent weather stations in the canyon, Parameter- elevation Regression on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) data is the best available source to characterize the climate of the study area. PRISM provides monthly climatic data interpolated from point station data for the continental United States (Daly et al. 2008). Among the many factors included in the interpolations is elevation. Although data is available from 1885 onward, data for the study area prior to 1930 has limited value because few weather stations existed in the vicinity of the canyon prior to that time (Michael A. Crimmins, personal communication, 2017). In late 2006, I installed three rain gauges near the bottom, middle, and top of the drainage and have collected monthly data since 2007 (except for 2013 when I was unable to check the gauges regularly). The gauges correlate well with the PRISM data (r = 0.89, 0.89, 0.85 respectively). continued next page Figure 2. NESOM 2925 Hartwood Drive Fort Worth, Texas 76109 [email protected] ABSTRACT Four new species of Baccharis are described from western Mexico and one is raised in rank from variety. Baccharis charucoensis Nesom, sp. nov. , from the Rio Mayo region along Chihuahua-Sonora border, is similar in habit and related to B. macrocephala of eastern Mexico but differs in its linear leaves with stiffly ciliate margins. Baccharis horizontalis Nesom, sp. nov. , from western Durango and adjacent Sinaloa, is similar and closely related to the widespread B. serrifolia but differs in its sessile leaves and distant geographical location. Baccharis supplex Nesom, sp. nov. , from southeastern Durango (mpios. Mezquital and Súchil) differs from the sympatric B. thesioides in its rhizomatous habit with one or few stems from the base, broader leaves, and few-flowered capitulescence. Baccharis praetermissia Nesom, sp. nov. , from the Cape Region of Baja California Sur, is distinct in its erect habit, nearly glabrous stems, glabrous, elliptic leaves, dense capitulescence, and non-accrescent pappus, and disjunct geography within sect. Aristidentes . Baccharis multiflora var. herbacea McVaugh from western Michoacan is recognized here at specific rank: Baccharis herbacea (McVaugh) Nesom, comb. et stat. nov. Each of these five species apparently is rare. In a review of Baccharis in CAS-DS, TEX-LL, and UC-JEPS, collections indicate that four distinct species are without names. They are formally described here, and another is recognized by raising its rank from variety to species.

    LEARNING ECOLOGY: ETHNOBOTANY IN THE SIERRA TARAHUMARA, MEXICO by FELICE SEA WYNDHAM (Under the Direction of Brent Berlin) ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates social-environmental factors contributing to differential ethnobotanical expertise among children in Rarámuri (Tarahumara) communities in Rejogochi, Chihuahua, Mexico. This research contributes to understanding processes of transmission and acquisition of environmental knowledge and to the development of an ecological, interactionist model of indigenous education. The first section describes an ethnography of Rarámuri childhood, focusing on children’s life stages, work, play, and family environments. Some aspects of Rarámuri epistemologies of learning are explored. Among these is the importance of relationship maintenance through ritual and thinking/behaving well. Structured interviews with Rarámuri children between the ages of 5 and 18 showed consensus as to the primary importance of mothers, fathers, aunts and uncles as teachers of plant knowledge. Secondarily, siblings, cousins and playmates were identified as teachers. The second section presents a quantitative study of children’s knowledge of a set of 40 culturally significant local plants in three use-categories: medicinal, edible, and other material utility. The social-environmental factors significant in predicting levels of plant knowledge among children were, most notably, which primary school (of two local choices) children attended and, to a lesser extent, age of the child completing the interview. Plant-name and plant-use interviews suggest that many children today are not acquiring their parents’ full repertoire of plant knowledge, but rather, exhibit knowledge of a restricted set of plants that are most salient culturally and ecologically. The discussion of results highlights the importance of understanding how knowledge distribution patterns correspond to social relationships, social roles, and individual and family interest and experience.

Trees or tree-like plants are defined here broadly as perennial, self-supporting plants with a total height of at least 5 m (without ascending leaves or inflorescences), and with one or several erect stems with a diameter of at least 10 cm. We continue our compilation of an updated list of all native Mexican tree species with the dicotyledonous families Asteraceae (36 species, 39% endemic), Leguminosae with its 3 subfamilies (449 species, 41% endemic), and Rubiaceae (134 species, 24% endemic). The tallest tree species reach 20 m in the Asteraceae, 70 m in the Leguminosae, and also 70 m in the Rubiaceae. The species-richest genus is Lonchocarpus with 67 tree species in Mexico. Three legume genera are endemic to Mexico (Conzattia, Hesperothamnus, and Heteroflorum). The appendix lists all species, including their original publication, references of taxonomic revisions, existence of subspecies or varieties, maximum height in Mexico, and endemism status.     Lake Havasu City Recommended Landscaping Plant List Lake Havasu City Recommended Landscaping Plant List Disclaimer Lake Havasu City has revised the recommended landscaping plant list. This new list consists of plants that can be adapted to desert environments in the Southwestern United States. This list only contains water conscious species classified as having very low, low, and low-medium water use requirements. Species that are classified as having medium or higher water use requirements were not permitted on this list. Such water use classification is determined by the type of plant, its average size, and its water requirements compared to other plants. For example, a large tree may be classified as having low water use requirements if it requires a low amount of water compared to most other large trees. This list is not intended to restrict what plants residents choose to plant in their yards, and this list may include plant species that may not survive or prosper in certain desert microclimates such as those with lower elevations or higher temperatures. In addition, this list is not intended to be a list of the only plants allowed in the region, nor is it intended to be an exhaustive list of all desert-appropriate plants capable of surviving in the region. This list was created with the intention to help residents, businesses, and landscapers make informed decisions on which plants to landscape that are water conscious and appropriate for specific environmental conditions. Lake Havasu City does not require the use of any or all plants found on this list. List Characteristics This list is divided between trees, shrubs, groundcovers, vines, succulents and perennials.
