CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1. Curcuma zedoaria Curcuma zedoaria is a starchy rhizomatous/tuberous from the Zingiberaceae family (table 1.1), commonly known as ginger family. “Ginger” is a general term for members or species of the ginger families. “Curcuma” is the genus name of the rhizomatous herb, of Zingiberaceae. The name was first given by the Linnaeus species Plantarum from the Arabic term meaning yellow colour, probably referring to the colour of the rhizomes (Govindarajan, 1980). Description and distribution Curcuma zedoaria is locally known as “kunyit putih” or “temu putih”. It is able to grow up to one and half meters or even more. The leaves are around eighty centimetres long and they usually have a purple-brown flush along the midrib on both surfaces of the leaf. The rhizomes are frequently confused with those of Curcuma aeruginosa because both are of a similar colour (yellow). However, they can be distinguished easily by conducting a cross section on the rhizomes of the mature plants of Curcuma aeruginosa which are slightly dark purplish. In comparison, the colour of the rhizomes of Curcuma zedoaria is pale yellow or white. The rhizomes of Curcuma aeruginosa are highly aromatic due to the high amount of 1, 8-cineol as 25.20% (Ibrahim et al. 2003). Ingwer erlebte im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder höchste Beachtung. Vor allem im Mittelalter fehlte die Pflanze auf keiner Tafel, da sie Linderung nach Völlerei und fettem Essen verschaffte und den Reichtum des Gastgebers unterstrich. Eine weitere schon lange bekannte Wirkung ist die Hilfe bei Übelkeit, insbeson- dere Reiseübelkeit und Seekrankheit. KAMM). 2 Name Der deutsche Name Ingwer, das lateinische Zingiber und der englische Ginger leiten sich von der altindischen Bezeichnung srngavera her, wobei das altindische srnga für Horn/Geweih steht und auf die hornförmige Gestalt des Rhizoms hinweist und veru aus dem Tamilischen für Wurzel stammt (MARZELL 1979). Nach GENAUST (1983) ist der erste Wortteil wahrscheinlich eine Abwandlung des Begriffs inchi aus der südindischen Sprache Malayalam und kann mit Wurzel übersetzt werden. Somit würde der Ingwer die wörtliche Bezeichnung „Wurzel-Wurzel“ tragen. -

Prioritization of Medicinal Plant for Their Development
PRIORITIZATION OF MEDICINAL PLANT FOR THEIR DEVELOPMENT Criteria for prioritization The National Medicinal Plant Board initially prioritized 32 medicinal plants at national level for their conservation and development. Recently, the list has been revised and 82 species have been included in the list. For the overall development of the medicinal plant sector in the state, there is a need to prioritize various medicinal plant species. This prioritization has to be based on different criteria such as ,(i) criteria for economic development, (ii) Prioritization to address the primary health care of the local community, (iii) medicinal plants prioritized for home and institutional garden, and (iv) prioritization of medicinal plants with conservation value. In the following section we have tried to touch upon different priorities relevant to the state. Medicinal Plants prioritized for trade for high income. The most important criterion they needs to be considered while prioritizing the species for high income is that the plants should be suitable to grow in the prevalent agroclimatic conditions of the state. The species should have high trade value. It should have consistently high demand. The collection, harvest and post harvest technology should suit to the site conditions of Meghalaya.There should have easy access to planting material and it should be comparatively easy to grow. Preference will also be given to those species which are suitable to grow in multi-tier plantations. The selected species should not get easily deteriorated on storage and continued cultivation. They should have enhanced scope for value addition either through primary processing or through secondary processing. A list of top ten prioritized species for obtaining high income through cultivation and trade is given in Table 18. -

Abstract: Wine is one of the functional fermented foods that have many health benefits. Commercially, wine is produced by the fermentation of yeast which involves the conversion of sugar to alcohol. Wine can act as a nutrient supplement for seasonal fruits and vegetables throughout the year. Using fruits and vegetables having medicinal and nutritional value as a substrate for wine production, the health benefits of them can be improved widely. Ginger and Indian gooseberry, which are known for its high medicinal and nutritional value are used as the substrate here. Fermentation is carried out with Saccharomyces cerevisiae commonly known as bakers yeast. Daily monitoring was done to study the composition and characteristics of the wine. The wine produced resembled the commercial wine in terms of its composition, taste and aroma. During the fermentation period the wines were analyzed for pH, titratable acidity, specific gravity, biomass content, alcohol and reducing sugar on a daily basis. pH show a decreased trend then attains minima and then increased. As the fermentation days proceed, the specific gravity increased and the alcohol percentage increased gradually. Batch 1 Amla (A1) showed a pH range of 3.79-3.56, specific gravity ranges from 1.09 -1.17 and alcohol content was 10.5%. -

However, this common name refers to three different botanical species with different pharmacological effects. To facilitate the genetic identification of these three species for their more precise application in Chinese medicine we here want to provide chloroplast sequences with specific identification sites that are easy to amplify. We therefore sequenced the complete chloroplast genomes of all three species and then screened those for suitable sequences describing the three species. The length of the three chloroplast genomes ranged from 161,053 bp to 161,541 bp, with a total of 131 encoded genes including 31 tRNA, eight rRNA and 92 protein-coding sequences. The simple repeat sequence analysis indicated the differences existed in these species, phylogenetic analyses showed the chloroplast genome can be used as an ultra-barcode to distinguish the three botanical species of rhubarb, the variation of the non-coding regions is higher than that of the protein coding regions, and the variations in single-copy region are higher than that in inverted repeat. -

It is important natural resources that provide many useful products for food, spices, medicines, dyes, perfume and aesthetics to man. Zingiber officinale, for example, has been used for many years as spices and in traditional forms of medicine to treat a variety of diseases. Recently, scientific study has sought to reveal the bioactive compounds of the rhizome. It has been found to be effective in the treatment of thrombosis, sea sickness, migraine and rheumatism. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FAMILY ZINGIBERACEAE Perennial rhizomatous herbs. Leaves simple, distichous. Inflorescence terminal on the leafy shoot or on the lateral shoot. Flower delicate, ephemeral and highly modified. All parts of the plant aromatic. Fruit a capsule. HABITATS Species of the Zingiberaceae are the ground plants of the tropical forests. They mostly grow in damp and humid shady places. They are also found infrequently in secondary forest. Some species can fully expose to the sun, and grow on high elevation. DISTRIBUTION Zingiberaceae are distributed mostly in tropical and subtropical areas. The center of distribution is in SE Asia.
