The Argentine is 5-16 against Federer with all five wins on hard courts, none more meaningful than when he rallied from a set-and-a-break down to deny Federer a sixth straight US Open title. Del Potro can prevent history from being made again as Federer and Rafael Nadal are one win from meeting for the first time at the US Open. The Swiss and Spaniard have been this close six times now, including in 2009, when del Potro defeated Nadal 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals before beating Federer in the final. • Nadal’s quarter-final opponent on Wednesday is #NextGenATP player Andrey Rublev. The 19-year-old Russian is the youngest US Open quarter-finalist since Andy Roddick in 2001. Rublev would be the youngest semi-finalist at the US Open since Lleyton Hewitt in 2000 and at any Grand Slam event since Nadal at 2005 Roland Garros. A teenager has never defeated a World No.

On Saturday against Andrey Rublev, he can start anew with a championship to begin 2018. The Frenchman arrived as a wild card following a four-month hiatus due to a right knee injury. Monfils has found success in familiar territory, falling to then-No. 1 Roger Federer (2006), then-No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2012) and then-No. 1 Rafael Nadal (2014) in his previous Doha finals. Monfils is one of three wild cards to reach the final in Doha’s 26-year tournament history, joining Younes El Aynaoui in 1996 and Nicolas Escude in 2004. • DOMINIC THIEM Thiem – Fucsovics 7-5, 6-1
Press Conference 24 July 2019 with DOMINIC THIEM Thiem – Fucsovics 7-5, 6-1 QUESTION: Congrats on the win. What do you think was the key moment in the match? Was it finally being able to break him at 5 all in the first set or was it another moment? THIEM: The first set was very close and I missed the first eight break chances, some of them I played good points. I missed two forehands I think very close, I missed this one backhand return on the net cord. So, I played some good points, still didn’t make it and then last possible chance at 6-5 I broke him. So, of course I was happy it didn’t go into the tiebreak, and that was also the key moment because from then on I gained more and more confidence, almost everything what I played went in. It was a very good match from my side in the second set. QUESTION: You’ve got Andrey Rublev up next, a different player to Marton today but what do you think? Do you think you need to change your style of play to play Andrey? THIEM: I think I played very good tennis especially in the second set. That’s what I’ll try to continue like this against Andrey but, of course, a completely different match-up. I think in one specific zone he is hitting the ball amazing, almost from every position on the court winners. So, my main goal is to bring him out of his comfort zone and of course not to let him too much in the offence because there he is amazing.
