Si le présent numéro déroge à cette coutume, c’est que sa sortie coïncide avec une période qui sort dramatiquement de l’ordinaire. La rédaction a donc choisi ce graffiti photographié au Brésil, qui met à l’honneur un peuple emblématique (les Yanomami), une couleur qui ne l’est pas moins (le rose)1 et, surtout, un concept dont le besoin se fait aujourd’hui cruellement sentir : celui de respect. 2 Du nord au sud du continent, en ces temps de coronavirus, les populations amérindiennes subissent la pandémie de plein fouet. Beaucoup ont été affectées de façon disproportionnée, laissées à l’abandon, victimes de taux de létalité bien supérieurs à ceux du reste de la population. Ces situations désastreuses sont évidemment corrélées au manque chronique de ressources et à des états de santé déjà fragiles. Mais elles résultent tout aussi incontestablement de l’irrespect, du mépris, voire de la haine trop souvent affichés à leur égard par les autorités publiques de leurs pays respectifs. 3 La communauté scientifique n’a pas non plus été épargnée par le Covid-19. Elle aussi compte ses morts, comme en attestent les hommages publiés dans notre rubrique nécrologique pour honorer la mémoire de ces éminents américanistes emportés par le coronavirus : Gérald Taylor (01/04/2020), Sylvie Vincent (30/04/2020), Robert Laughlin (28/05/2020). 4 Sur un registre moins tragique, mais non moins préoccupant, notre appel au respect s’adresse aussi à nos instances de tutelle. À l’unanimité moins une voix, notre comité de rédaction a en effet décidé de se solidariser avec le mouvement « Revues en lutte », qui réunit à ce jour 156 revues scientifiques de sciences humaines et sociales, en publiant l’éditorial commun qui ouvre ce numéro. Son contenu exprime notre inquiétude – partagée par la quasi-totalité de la communauté scientifique hexagonale – de voir fragilisé, par des réformes annoncées et en cours, un service public de l’enseignement supérieur et de la recherche dont les revues scientifiques constituent un rouage essentiel. Journal de la Société des américanistes, 106-1 | 2020 4 5 Sans doute serait-il vain d’essayer de traduire le terme respeito dans une langue amérindienne, du moins sans recours à l’emprunt ou à des paraphrases aussi élaborées que celles qui seraient nécessaires pour rendre le concept yanomami de waitheri dans une langue d’origine européenne2. NOTES 1. À en juger par leur ornementation faciale, ce sont des femmes qui sont représentées sur cette peinture murale. La couleur rose constitue donc vraisemblablement un clin d’œil aux revendications féministes. 2. Le terme waitheri a été initialement popularisé par la très sulfureuse œuvre de Napoleon Chagnon, qui proposait de le traduire par « féroce » ou « agressif », conformément au portrait belliciste qu’il brossait de ce peuple. Des études subséquentes et plus subtiles ont cependant fait émerger des valences moins brutales de ce terme qui – entre autres qualités éminemment respectables – renvoie aussi au courage, à l’audace, à la superbe et à certaines formes de générosité et d’altruisme. Journal de la Société des américanistes, 106-1 | 2020 6 Sciences en danger, revues en lutte Par le collectif des revues en lutte 1 Depuis le début de l’année 20201, plus d’une centaine de revues académiques, en grande majorité issues des sciences humaines et sociales françaises, se déclarent les unes « en lutte », les autres « en grève ». Prenant part au mouvement social en cours, leurs comités de rédaction protestent à la fois contre le projet visant les retraites, contre la réforme de l’assurance chômage adoptée à l’automne 2019 et contre les propositions contenues dans les rapports pour la loi de programmation pluriannuelle de la recherche (LPPR)2. Par son ampleur et par sa forme – la grève et le vote de motions qui incitent les comités de rédaction à sortir de leur réserve habituelle –, cette mobilisation est historiquement inédite. La dynamique collective qu’elle suscite, par-delà les disciplines, les écoles et les conditions d’exercice de chacune des revues, témoigne du sentiment de révolte que provoquent ces réformes. Pour l’enseignement supérieur et la recherche, la réforme des retraites telle qu’envisagée actuellement par le gouvernement conduira à l’accroissement général des inégalités (entre hommes et femmes, entre titulaires et précaires, etc.) et à l’appauvrissement futur de toutes et tous, fonctionnaires, contractuel·le·s ou précaires. La réforme de l’assurance chômage augmentera, elle aussi, la vulnérabilité déjà difficilement supportable du très grand nombre des travailleur·euse·s précaires sur lesquel·le·s repose massivement la vie des universités et des laboratoires : ils et elles représentent d’ores et déjà plus d’un quart des effectifs d’enseignant·e·s, et encore bien davantage parmi les travailleurs et travailleuses administratif·ve·s et techniques. La LPPR, enfin, ne fera qu’aggraver le manque de moyens, de postes et de stabilité, et approfondir les inégalités qui minent l’enseignement supérieur et la recherche, et que deux décennies de « réformes » massivement contestées n’ont cessé d’amplifier. During the Spanish colony and the two centuries of Creole neo-colonialism, the troop of all armies were and continues to be, essentially composed of anahuacas. 1. Mesoweb Publications The Rulers of Palenque INTRODUCTION The unsung pioneer in the study of Palenque’s dynastic history is Heinrich Berlin, who in three seminal studies (Berlin 1959, 1965, 1968) provided the essential outline of the dynasty and explicitly identified the name glyphs and likely accession dates of the major Early and Late Classic rulers (Stuart 2005:148-149). More prominent and well deserved credit has gone to Linda Schele and Peter Mathews (1974), who summarized the rulers of Palenque’s Late Classic and gave them working names in Ch’ol Mayan (Stuart 2005:149). The present work is partly based on the transcript by Phil Wanyerka of a hieroglyphic workshop presented by Schele and Mathews at the 1993 Maya Meet- ings at Texas (Schele and Mathews 1993).     Text and pictures adapted from http://www.crystalinks.com/toltec.html Toltec The Atlantes are columns in the form of Toltec warriors in Tula The word Toltec in Mesoamerican studies has been used in different ways by different scholars to refer to actual populations and polities of pre-Columbian central Mexico or to the mythical ancestors mentioned in the mythical/historical narratives of the Aztecs. It is an ongoing debate whether the Toltecs can be understood to have formed an actual ethnic group at any point in Mesoamerican history or if they are mostly or only a product of Aztec myth. The scholars who have understood the Toltecs to have been an actual ethnic group often connect them to the archeological site of Tula, Hidalgo which is then supposed to have been the Tollan of Aztec myth. This tradition assumes the "Toltec empire" to have dominated much of central Mexico between the 10th and 12th century AD. Other Mexican cities such as Teotihuacán have also been proposed to have been the historical Tollan "Place of Reeds", the city from which the name Tolteca "inhabitant of Tollan" is derived in the Nahuatl language. The term Toltec has also been associated with the arrival of certain Central Mexican cultural traits into the Mayan sphere of dominance that took place in the late classic and early postclassic periods, and the Postclassic Mayan civilizations of Chichén Itzá, Mayapán and the Guatemalan highlands have been referred to as "toltecized" or "mexicanized" Mayas. For example the striking similarities between the city of Tula, Hidalgo and Chichen Itza have often been cited as direct evidence for Toltec dominance of the Postclassic Maya.

This could apply, for example, to a PhD dissertation or a catalogue of archaeological data. All Access Archaeology publications are available in open-access e-pdf format and in print format. The open-access model supports dissemination in areas of the world where budgets are more severely limited, and also allows individual academics from all over the world the opportunity to access the material privately, rather than relying solely on their university or public library. Print copies, nevertheless, remain available to individuals and institutions who need or prefer them. The material is refereed and/or peer reviewed. Copy-editing takes place prior to submission of the work for publication and is the responsibility of the author. Academics who are able to supply print-ready material are not charged any fee to publish (including making the material available in open-access). In some instances the material is type-set in-house and in these cases a small charge is passed on for layout work. Our principal effort goes into promoting the material, both in open-access and print, where Access Archaeology books get the same level of attention as all of our publications which are marketed through e-alerts, print catalogues, displays at academic conferences, and are supported by professional distribution worldwide.

I propose a comparison of the general characteristics of the cities of Calakmul, Balamku, and Nadzca’an, all of which occupied the geographic area known as the Campeche Peten, so as to analyze elements of the cities of this space. En la actualidad resulta problemático proponer una explicación o modelo de patrón de asentamiento general para los diferentes centros urbanos que integran el área Maya, de hecho, se ha necesitado retomar la visión particular de los casos de estudio para poder generar líneas de investigación que realmente respondan interrogantes sobre la manera en que los antiguos Mayas planearon y construyeron los espacios donde desarrollaron su sociedad por un periodo de ocupación continua de más de 1200 años.
