A celebration of life, art and exhibition This year Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest celebrates 75 years of art practice and exhibition on this site. In 1942, Gerald Lewers purchased this property to use as an occasional residence while working nearby as manager of quarrying company Farley and Lewers. A decade later, the property became the family home of Gerald and Margo Lewers and their two daughters, Darani and Tanya. It was here the family pursued their individual practices as artists and welcomed many Sydney artists, architects, writers and intellectuals. At this site in Western Sydney, modernist thinking and art practice was nurtured and flourished. Upon the passing of Margo Lewers in 1978, the daughters of Margo and Gerald Lewers sought to honour their mother’s wish that the house and garden at Emu Plains be gifted to the people of Penrith along with artworks which today form the basis of the Gallery’s collection. Received by Penrith City Council in 1980, the Neville Wran led state government supported the gift with additional funds to create a purpose built gallery on site. Opened in 1981, the gallery supports a seasonal exhibition, education and public program. The sense of place, both classical and Aboriginal, is explored through letters and diaries from Greece in 1967 and from Bathurst Island in the Northern Territory in 1974. -

SCULPTURE BY THE SEA: AN OVERVIEW “The idea of Sculpture by the Sea was simple… to stage a large free to the public sculpture exhibition along the spectacular 2km Bondi Coastal walk for the people of Sydney and its visitors to enjoy.” David Handley, Founding Director. Sculpture by the Sea’s mission is to provide a major, free to the public, sculpture exhibition that transforms beautiful and popular coastal locations into temporary, large-scale outdoor exhibition spaces for all to enjoy. The exhibition aims to broaden audience engagement and understanding of sculpture. Sculpture by the Sea continues to grow each year in both scale and diversity, providing more opportunities for a wide range of local, interstate and international artists to showcase their remarkably varied outdoors works. HISTORY Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi In 1995, Sculpture by the Sea’s Founding Director, David Handley, was living and working in Prague. During this time, he visited an outdoor sculpture park in Klatovy, Northern Bohemia, and felt inspired to begin something similar in Australia. Upon his return to Sydney in 1996, David took the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk and noticed a myriad of natural plinths in the landscape. With this inspiring location at hand, and the idea of creating an outdoor, free to the public, visual arts event, Sculpture by the Sea was born! It is designed to provide a starting point to generate discussion and activities before, during and after a visit to National Anthem and A New Order, to be used in conjunction with the exhibition catalogue, didactic labels and artworks. The resource is intended for use in the design of projects related to subject strands and curriculum outcomes. It is broadly aimed at students from years 7 to 10 and VCE Units 1–4, however, it provides generalised information that can be tailored to suit younger students. While the focus of the resource is on the artistic practices of artists included in National Anthem and A New Order, it can be adapted to explore modes of artistic practice more broadly, and to extend avenues for further discussion and research. Similarly, the scope of this resource may be modified to suit cross-curricular activities in various subject strands and to enable a range of pedagogical outcomes. -

August 2017 Newsletter Weaversbazaar Masterclass: Colour and the Bauhaus Tradition, led by Fiona Rutherford. weaversbazaar are delighted to announce their next Masterclass, ‘Colour and the Bauhaus Tradition’, which will be led by masterweaver Fiona Rutherford. It will take place in West Sussex on 28th and 29th October 2017. We are inspired by the Bauhaus weavers and their legacy of colour and design that continues to ‘Find the ways (detail)’, designed and inform us nearly a hundred years on. woven by Fiona Rutherford Understanding how to balance and blend colour is fundamental to tapestry weaving. Fiona’s focus will be on helping to determine how to choose a colour palate and yarns to create a strong design through a simple use of pattern. Design is integral to this workshop. We will be looking at how to create asymmetrical patterns and lines through a controlled balance of colour. Fiona Rutherford lives in Edinburgh where she has a home-based studio. She has been weaving and teaching workshops for over twenty-five years and her tapestries are marked by a strong use of colour and pared abstract imagery. Fiona exhibits widely in the UK and internationally and her tapestries are held in major public collections. She is currently exhibiting in “Here and Now” at the Holburne ‘Time to Dance’ designed and woven by Fiona Rutherford Museum in Bath and next year she will be exhibiting in ARTAPESTRY 5 in Denmark.
