I sit on the USBID’s Streetscapes and Public Realm Advisory Committee who put forth this project. When the public realm is activated in a positive way such as with public art, it creates a sense of place. In this case, we want those who work, play, and live around Union Square to have a positive experience. I firmly believe this art installation will enhance their experience. I urge the City and County of San Francisco’s Art Commission to support this project as it would celebrate the rich diversity of the Union Square District. Holding a fair in a former place of worship in a time of post-pandemic insecurity and enduring hardship for the arts has resulted in many artists growing understandably obsessed with issues of climate change and the very fate of Planet Earth, has made this A Leap of Faith indeed. 36 artists, showcasing over 200 works in what may seem an eclectic feast of visual triggers – are connected in this undercurrent of apocalyptic obsession, and in what follows there are references to Earth aplenty – the use of earth itself as a media, depictions of the landscape irradiated and images of its denizens such as feasting meat ants. There are found objects rearranged – even the bulk of a Volkswagen Golf, grown obese with strange metallic fungus. All in all, |notfair| 2021 remains a stubborn celebration of creativity and imagination and skill in the face of adversity. The Curators |notfair| acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon we gather and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and future. Sculpture by the Sea’s mission is to provide a major, free to the public, sculpture exhibition that transforms beautiful and popular coastal locations into temporary, large-scale outdoor exhibition spaces for all to enjoy. The exhibition aims to broaden audience engagement and understanding of sculpture. Sculpture by the Sea continues to grow each year in both scale and diversity, providing more opportunities for a wide range of local, interstate and international artists to showcase their remarkably varied outdoors works. HISTORY Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi In 1995, Sculpture by the Sea’s Founding Director, David Handley, was living and working in Prague. During this time, he visited an outdoor sculpture park in Klatovy, Northern Bohemia, and felt inspired to begin something similar in Australia. Upon his return to Sydney in 1996, David took the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk and noticed a myriad of natural plinths in the landscape. With this inspiring location at hand, and the idea of creating an outdoor, free to the public, visual arts event, Sculpture by the Sea was born! Our oil on linen represented artists have created an artwork specifically 82cm x 137cm for the exhibition, based around the curatorial premise of representing Melbourne, and what our city means to each individual artist. The responses are varied and rich. The artists involved in the 25th Anniversary Exhibition are as follows, with a brief statement on their work. MARGARET ACKLAND Ackland’s practice has previously dealt with the relics of human experience, albeit a more urbane and contained version.
