Our Healthy Streets – The Facts

Summary-

Streets in the area carry much higher than the average traffic on similar residential streets in the borough.

In the peak hours some residential streets are carrying more traffic than major A- roads.

The peak hours are between 7am-10am and 3pm-8pm. This unusual traffic pattern shows that traffic using the area includes significant volumes of commuter traffic.

The pollution profile shows that air pollution is worse between 7am-10am and 3pm-7pm.

There are significantly high numbers of pupils crossing the roads during the peak hours.

Over 7000 through journeys are made in the area in a typical day. They enter and exit the neighbourhood within less than 10-15 minutes.

Key Findings

Dulwich Village / Calton Avenue/Court Lane junction – Can the junction cope with the volume of traffic? Morning

 Calton Avenue is over saturated or over capacity i.e. this arm has too much traffic for the junction to cope with, which means that long queues are formed.  Dulwich Village northbound and southbound is near saturation i.e. this arm of the junction is reaching its limit to cope with traffic, so queues are formed.  Turney Road has spare capacity, i.e. this arm of the junction can accommodate additional traffic.

Afternoon

 Calton Avenue is over saturated, this arm has too much traffic for the junction to cope with, and so long queues are formed.  Dulwich Village northbound and southbound is over saturated: this arm has too much traffic for the junction to cope with, so long queues are formed.  Turney Road is at capacity: this arm of the junction is reaching its limit to cope with traffic, so queues are formed.

When are the busiest hours? In the morning, weekday traffic levels are high between 7am and 10am.

In the afternoon weekday traffic levels are high between 3pm and 8pm.

This demonstrates that while school-related traffic is clearly an issue in this area, traffic remains very high outside of school travel hours, traffic flows indicating large numbers of people travelling through the Dulwich area without stopping.

How does traffic volumes in the Dulwich Village area compare with typical residential streets and A-Roads ?

Typical residential streets in carry on average around 3000 motor vehicles per day – as can be seen above, Turney Road, Burbage Road and Court Lane are carrying significantly higher volumes of traffic than this.

A typical ‘B Road’ in Southwark carries on average around 8000 motor vehicles per day – Dulwich Village is carrying far more traffic than this.

Major roads like Lordship Lane and East Dulwich Grove are carrying comparable traffic at the peak time to residential roads such as Burbage Road and Dulwich Village.

Dulwich Village / Calton Avenue /Turney Road Junction :How does northbound traffic compare with southbound ?

Morning Peak:

 Dulwich North is the busiest arm of the junction, with most traffic going northbound, toward Red Post Hill.

Afternoon Peak:

 Dulwich Village south is the busiest arm of the junction , with most traffic going southbound (If Calton Avenue is closed and traffic from Turney Road is restricted then southbound traffic on Dulwich Village will be reduced).

Generally there is more traffic on Dulwich Village, south of Calton Avenue than on the northern section. This is due to significant traffic turning right into Calton Avenue in the AM or exiting from Calton Avenue going southbound.

Dulwich Village North Traffic profile

6

Dulwich Village South: Traffic Profile

Burbage Road Morning Peak - There is significant traffic in the morning peak, heading northbound, mostly to avoid the area.

Afternoon peak:The southbound peak is higher than northbound.

7

Turney Road :(west of Burbage Road )

Morning peak – The eastbound peak is higher than the westbound.

Afternoon peak –The eastbound peak is higher than the westbound.

Turney Road east of Burbage Road carries less traffic than the western section. This is likely due to traffic using Burbage Road to avoid the Herne Hill area.

9

Court Lane Court Lane experiences high flows of traffic westbound in the morning peak, and a sustained eastbound evening peak between around 3pm and 8pm.

10

Townley Road Morning: most traffic turning out of Townley Road.

Afternoon: most traffic tuning into Townley Road.

How many vehicles use the area for short cuts? The tables below show all routes travelling through the area that have more than 50 motor vehicle journeys in a typical weekday 12 hour period. The figures show the total number of vehicle movements in that period, as well as the numbers for the morning and evening peaks.

This shows high volumes of traffic on many routes through the area – particularly on Turney Road in both directions, and northbound routes through Dulwich Village.

The table below shows the total number of daily through journeys that would be affected by the measures proposed in Our Healthy Streets – Dulwich: Phase 3. Potentially over 7000 journeys per day could be removed from the Dulwich Village area.

What is pedestrian traffic like on key routes in the area? The diagrams below show the daily pedestrian counts at two of the key junctions in this project. As the diagrams indicate, there is an extremely high volume of pedestrian traffic at Dulwich Village and at the junction of East Dulwich Grove with Townley Road – two junctions which also see very high volumes of motor vehicle traffic.
