The variety of cooking methods and colourful ingredients blend together in a hot wok to create signature dishes of particular cuisines. Nevertheless, a cuisine needs to be clearly defined by definite individual characteristics so it is recognised. The primary objective of this study is to understand how Malaysian cuisine is used in marketing Malaysia as a tourist destination. Content analysis is used on selected Malaysian cuisine promotional materials such as brochures, travel guides, and webpages to extract relevant data. Results show that “close-up meal” had the highest image count from among the eight categories identified. As for text, ten categories were identified. “Creating desire” topped the list, followed by “sensory appeal”. The Malaysian Government is particular in the details selected for images of and narrative on the local cuisine. As a result, the marketing collateral could provide excitement and help tourists to anticipate the type of food experience that they can find when travelling in Malaysia. Rombouts Co-reader: S. Bekker Executive summary Creating equal opportunities and equity in the area of employment is a challenging policy decisions for all nations. In trying to address inequality in the labour market, some countries have chosen to adopt “positive discrimination” measures, otherwise referred to as affirmative action. Yet, years after their implementation, the measures are the target of enduring objections. Critics argue that the model provides unfair opportunities for a selected group, stressing market inequalities while supporters relentlessly point out the need for such measures in remedying past discrimination. In a first time, the study provides a set of definitions surrounding the measures as well as and overview of international and regional interpretations of affirmative action. Further arguments for and against the implementation are discussed. The second part of the research provides and in-depth analysis of how affirmative action is understood at national level in three different countries: Canada, South Africa and Malaysia. Having compared the three methods of implementation, the study analyses labour market changes incurred by the adoption of such policies in the three countries. The study finds more encouraging labour market results in Canada and Malaysia but denotes adverse spill over effects of these policies in all countries. The research notes that affirmative action measures have been necessary in addressing numerical representation issues. -

For multi-ethnic nations such as Malaysia, diversity is perceived as a challenge to national unity. Extant literature shows that the different ethnic groups in Malaysia have expressed different ideals on inter-ethnic unity and differ in their ideas on how it may be achieved. To what extent do these differences exist? The purpose of this research was to investigate the perceptions of inter-ethnic unity in Malaysia among the three main ethnic groups. A survey measuring perceptions on the issue of inter-ethnic unity was distributed among 575 university students at four different institutions of higher learning in the Klang Valley, Malaysia. The results show that the different ethnic groups held similar problem perceptions in terms of problem recognition, involvement, constraint recognition, and did not differ significantly in terms of their social position on the problem. There were however, significant differences between the Chinese and Malay/Bumiputeras, as well as between the Chinese and Indians when it came to perceived level of knowledge and experience about the problem. The findings indicate that different ethnic groups may be differently equipped to handle the issue of inter-ethnic unity in Malaysia. -

This construct is used to explain the influence of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and its consequence towards firm performance. Design/methodology/approach Multiples Linear Regressions (MLR) analysis was conducted to test the hypothesis on surveyed firms selected from the current available list given by MARA (the government agency for Indigenous or Bumiputera SMEs). The specific research question is: Does the relationship between government supports received by entrepreneur and firm performance is mediated by entrepreneurial orientation (EO)? Findings In Malay firms, the relationship between government supports with firm performance was not mediates by entrepreneurial orientation (EO). However, the construct is significant as predictor towards firm performance. Practical implications This research provides a better understanding of the indigenous entrepreneurs for policy makers, NGOs, business support organizations and the indigenous entrepreneurs themselves particularly in planning or utilizing government supports programmes. Originality/value The impact of government supports towards firm performance observed in Malay firms is unique to the paper. Our studies provided the empirical test in understanding indigenous entrepreneurship in Malay firms in Malaysia towards developing a more holistic entrepreneurship theory. CHAPTER 6 English for the Indigenous People of Sarawak: Focus on the Bidayuhs Patricia Nora Riget and Xiaomei Wang Introduction Sarawak covers a vast land area of 124,450 km2 and is the largest state in Malaysia. Despite its size, its population of 2.4 million people constitutes less than one tenth of the country’s population of 30 million people (as of 2015). In terms of its ethnic composition, besides the Malays and Chinese, there are at least 10 main indigenous groups living within the state’s border, namely the Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Bisaya, Kelabit, Lun Bawang, Penan, Kayan, Kenyah and Kajang, the last three being collectively known as the Orang Ulu (lit. ‘upriver people’), a term that also includes other smaller groups (Hood, 2006). The Bidayuh (formerly known as the Land Dayaks) population is 198,473 (State Planning Unit, 2010), which constitutes roughly 8% of the total popula- tion of Sarawak. The Bidayuhs form the fourth largest ethnic group after the Ibans, the Chinese and the Malays. In terms of their distribution and density, the Bidayuhs are mostly found living in the Lundu, Bau and Kuching districts (Kuching Division) and in the Serian district (Samarahan Division), situated at the western end of Sarawak (Rensch et al., 2006). However, due to the lack of employment opportunities in their native districts, many Bidayuhs, especially youths, have migrated to other parts of the state, such as Miri in the east, for job opportunities and many have moved to parts of Peninsula Malaysia, espe- cially Kuala Lumpur, to seek greener pastures. Traditionally, the Bidayuhs lived in longhouses along the hills and were involved primarily in hill paddy planting. -

A survey of 200 respondents in the Song district was conducted. To determine the objective eth- nolinguistic vitality, a structural analysis was performed on their sociolinguistic backgrounds. The results show the Iban language dominates in family, friend- ship, transactions, religious, employment, and education domains. The language use patterns show functional differentiation into the Iban language as the “low language” and Malay as the “high language”. The respondents have positive at- titudes towards the Iban language. The dimensions of language attitudes that are strongly positive are use of the Iban language, Iban identity, and intergenera- tional transmission of the Iban language. The marginally positive dimensions are instrumental use of the Iban language, social status of Iban speakers, and prestige value of the Iban language. Inferential statistical tests show that language atti- tudes are influenced by education level. However, language attitudes and useof the Iban language are not significantly correlated. By viewing language use and attitudes from the perspective of ethnolinguistic vitality, this study has revealed that a numerically dominant group assumed to be safe from language shift has only medium vitality, based on both objective and subjective evaluation. -
The Study of Xi Jinping Malaysia Overseas Chinese Affairs Policy
The Study of Xi JinPing Malaysia Overseas Chinese Affairs Policy Toh, Jin-Xuan Xi Jinping, the President of the People’s Republic of China adopted the ideology of “Chinese Dream” as the highest guiding principle in his reign. He also developed the “One Belt One Road” economic strategy as one of his global initiatives. Xi’s aggressive style of ruling means that he has abandoned Deng Xiaoping’s strategy in keeping China in a low profile. His government is getting more active and vocal in the fields of foreign and Overseas Chinese affairs. In this paper, systematic theories are applied to study Xi’s Overseas Chinese policies. With a background research of the history of Overseas Chinese affairs, this paper includes studies on Xi’s “Chinese Dream”, on the assignments of personnel in the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, and on Xi’s strategies of foreign trade and diplomacy. This paper also explores China’s soft power and its influences upon Malaysian political parties and the Chinese community throughout the implementation of Overseas Chinese policies. This study shows that Xi’s Overseas Chinese policies towards Malaysia are full of challenges. First, China’s active participation in the Overseas Chinese affairs imposes high risks on the fragile relationships among ethnic groups in Malaysia. It might also affect the diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China. Second, China might have to face pressure from the Malaysian government and the Malays when they are working on Overseas Chinese policies towards Malaysia. Third, the Malaysian Chinese community generally upholds “One China policy”, and the business and political leaders of the community have stood up to support the ideology of “Chinese Dream”. -

Abstract This paper contributes to the scant body of literature on inequalities among and within ethnic groups in the Philippines by examining both the vertical and horizontal measures in terms of opportunities in accessing basic services such as education, electricity, safe water, and sanitation. The study also provides a glimpse of the patterns of inequality in Mindanao. The results show that there are significant inequalities in opportunities in accessing basic services within and among ethnic groups in the Philippines.
