INFORMATION ABOUT THE RESEARCH PROJECT The joint research project, "Acid Precipitation - Effects on Forest and Fish" (the SNSF-project) of the Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the Agricultural Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment, was started in 1972. The objective of the project is to: 1.- establish as precisely as possible the effects of acid precipitation on forest and freshwater fish; 2.- investigate the effects of air pollutants on soil, vegetation and water, required to satisfy point 1; and participate in the planning of a future national environmental monitoring programme. A Steering Committee with four representatives has overall direction of the project. The Sterring Committee is responsible for research policies and financial questions. The Director has the main responsibility for conducting the research activities of the entire project. The Project Committee consists of the Director, sub-project leaders and contact persons from the main institutes co-operating within the project. The Project Committee deals with research administration on a practical level. The project secretariat is at the Norwegian Forest Research Institute, Aas. Research activities on the project are organized and carried out interinstitu- tionally with main programs in the following institutes: Agricultural University of Norway (NLH) Bergen Technical Engineering College (BIH) Central Institute for Indus trial Research (SI) Directorate for Wildlife and Freshwater Fish (DVF) Norwegian Computing Center (NR) Norwegian Forest Research Institute (NISK) • Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) Norwegian Institute of Atomic Energy (IFA) Norwegian Water Resources and Electricity Board (NVE) University of Bergen (UiB) University of Oslo (Ui0) The research project is supported financially by the two Research Councils, the Norwegian Ministry of Environment, and participating institutes. Project research results are published in Technical notes (TN), Internal reports (IR), Research reports (FR) and in international journals. • Inquiries about the joint research project: "Acid Precipitation - Effects on Forest and Fish" can be directed to: SNSF-project, Box 61, 1432 Aas,NLH, Norway. • 2. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION 90 • BIBLIOGRAPHY 93 APPENDIX 98 • Foreword This report is based on extensive inquiries and interviews during the period 1974 - 1979. The investigation is an extension of a previous survey which was carried out during the autumn of 1974. The report presents the extent of damage caused by acidification on the inland fisheries in Southern Norway. The field investigations were carried out by Iver H. Sevaldrud. He and Ivar P. Muniz cooperated in the compilation of the material and the drafting of the final report. This extensive task was made possible only by the cooperation of private individuals and organizations. They provided the information which made it possible to paint the overall picture of the damaging • effects. We are particularly grateful to Einar.Snekvik; scientific consultant at DVF, Fisheries Research, As, who before his death began the initial recordings of lakes in which the fish populations were extinct in SçSrlandet during the early seventies. He made available to us his knowledge and all his records. We also wish to thank Jan W. Finstad of the Ostfold Agricultural Society, Bjarne Smukkestad of the Buskerud Agricultural Society, Jan P. Madsen from the Hordaland County and Per J. Berg of the Vestfold Agricultural Society. These persons collected information regarding fish populations and water chemistry for their respective areas. • We also wish to thank Lise Henriksen and Dag Svalastog of the SNSF-project fisheries group, who participated in the field work and in the preparation of the material, Sigmund Kalvenes, of the Norwegian Computing Center who was responsible for the EDP processing and Helge Leivestad of the University of Bergen for his assistance in the preparation of trends and dynamics. We also wish to mention the consultants at the Directorate for Wildlife Page 5 and Freshwater Fish, (DVF) and the colleagues in the SNSF-project who all participated in the work. Finally, we wish to thank the many landowners, fisheries associations and interested private individuals who in interviews provided information regarding their fisheries. Theirs was the major contribution and one of the most important prerequisites for the work regarding the acidification • damage in Southern Norway. Blindern, 29 September 1980 Ivar P. Muniz Iver H. INTRODUCTION As early as in the 1920's it was reported that the brown trout had disappeared from some lakes in southernmost Norway (DAHL, 1920). At the same time problems were experienced with mortality rates at some hatcheries and this was related to water acidity (DAHL, 1926; SUNDE, 1926). Dahl contended that some cases of mortality were related to acid water. It took another 30 years before the relationship between precipitation, acidity and fish population was established (DANNEVIG, 1959). For a long period, the acidity problems were related to the southernmost parts of Norway; the Agder Counties and Telemark, where the fish populations became extinct or strongly reduced in a number of lakes and streams (JENSEN and SNEKVIK, 1972). This related mainly to salmon near the coast and in the interior where the brown trout was the most important species. With time it became apparent that other parts of Southern Norway were also exposed to damage of the inland fisheries and that this apparently
