Londons Warming Technical Report
Final Report 61 5. The Potential Environmental Impacts of Climate Change in London 5.1 Introduction There are several approaches to climate change impact assessment. These include: extrapolating findings from existing literature; fully quantitative, model-based simulations of the system(s) of interest; or eliciting the opinions of experts and stakeholders. All three approaches will be implemented in this section by a) reviewing the formal literature where appropriate, b) undertaking exemplar impacts modelling for specific issues identified through c) dialogue with stakeholders. Two workshops were held in May 2002 in order to engage expert and stakeholder opinion regarding the most pressing potential climate change impacts facing London. Following stakeholder consultation, five environmental areas were highlighted: 1) urban heat island effects (including London Underground temperatures); 2) air quality; 3) water resources ; 4) tidal and riverine flood risk and 5) biodiversity. Although these are addressed in turn – and where appropriate, case studies have been included – it is also acknowledged that many of these are cross-cutting (for example, river water quality impacts relate to flood risk, water resources and biodiversity). The final section delivers a summary of the most significant environmental impacts of climate change for London. Policy responses are addressed elsewhere. 5.2 Higher Temperatures 5.2.1 Context Throughout this section the reader is invited to refer to the downscaling case study provided in Section 4.7). Heat waves may increase in frequency and severity in a warmer world. Urban heat islands exacerbate the effects of heat waves by increasing summer temperatures by several more degrees Celsius relative to rural locations (see Figure 3.2b). -

With half-term about to commence, Achieving for Children will run a food voucher scheme to address the pressing issue of local hard-pressed and vulnerable families in the borough not being able to cover the cost of meals during the school holiday. Guidance will be launched early next week to let eligible families know how they can collect their voucher. Fourteen school streets now live in Richmond Earlier this year, Richmond Council used emergency powers to ensure that three local primary schools were the first in the borough to receive ‘School Street’ status prior to the summer holidays. -
Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907)
Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks. -

It is the nation’s clock, instantly recognizable, and brought into Britain’s homes everyday by the BBC. It is part of the nation’s heritage and has long been established as the nation’s timepiece heralding almost every broadcast of national importance. On the morning of August 5th 1976 at 3:45 AM a catastrophe occurred to the movement of the great clock in Westminster Palace. The damage was so great that for a brief time it was considered to be beyond repair and a new way to move the hands on the four huge exterior dials was considered. How did this happen and more importantly why did this happen and how could such a disaster to one of the world’s great horological treasures be prevented from happening again? Let us first go through a brief history leading up to the creation of the clock. -

Anno Dracula - Johnny Alucard Pdf, Epub, Ebook
ANNO DRACULA - JOHNNY ALUCARD PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Kim Newman | 480 pages | 19 Sep 2014 | Titan Books Ltd | 9781781164228 | English | London, United Kingdom Anno Dracula - Johnny Alucard PDF Book It includes references to Taxi Driver , Ms. I think part of it is due to it being mostly composed of short stories, but it seemed more like a way for Newman to play around with references instead of give us a full plot. Son of the Dragon. I still enjoyed it, but maybe not as much as the other books in the series. Hollywood, the glitz, the glamour, the stars. This is a denser, much more complex and nuanced book in the Anno Dracula series, which shows an intelligence, an intensity, a knowing wink in a novel designed to homage as well as entertain that many other similar books lack. It's an assemblage of some previously published stories and new material, and the seams show, but these concerns are largely silenced by its many inspired moments and an unexpectedly moving finish. When the red thirst was on them, their famed powers of insight and persuasion turned to fuzz and fudge. Maybe there is more to be said. A relic of the past. Just a touch. The only attachment that I had to the three female leads is mostly due to my prior encounters with them. The series currently consists of five novels and a number of short stories and novellas. The stories have a lot to do with movies, and you can see Newman's love of film shine through as he takes us through the world of making movies, but what I wanted was more story, more depth, and more coherence. -

The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes

The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes "Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness." PSALM lxxxviii. 18 CHAPTER I Robert Bunting and Ellen his wife sat before their dully burning, carefully-banked-up fire. The room, especially when it be known that it was part of a house standing in a grimy, if not exactly sordid, London thoroughfare, was exceptionally clean and well-cared-for. A casual stranger, more particularly one of a Superior class to their own, on suddenly opening the door of that sitting-room; would have thought that Mr. page 1 / 387 and Mrs. Bunting presented a very pleasant cosy picture of comfortable married life. Bunting, who was leaning back in a deep leather arm-chair, was clean-shaven and dapper, still in appearance what he had been for many years of his life--a self-respecting man-servant. On his wife, now sitting up in an uncomfortable straight-backed chair, the marks of past servitude were less apparent; but they were there all the same--in her neat black stuff dress, and in her scrupulously clean, plain collar and cuffs. Mrs. Bunting, as a single woman, had been what is known as a useful maid. But peculiarly true of average English life is the time-worn English proverb as to appearances being deceitful. Mr. and Mrs. Bunting were sitting in a very nice room and in their time--how long ago it now seemed!--both husband and wife had been proud of their carefully chosen belongings. -
