Hood, My Street: Ghetto Spaces in American Hip-Hop Music
Pobrane z czasopisma New Horizons in English Studies http://newhorizons.umcs.pl Data: 22/08/2019 20:22:20 New Horizons in English Studies 2/2017 CULTURE & MEDIA • Lidia Kniaź Maria Curie-SkłodowSka univerSity (uMCS) in LubLin [email protected] My City, My ‘Hood, My Street: Ghetto Spaces in American Hip-Hop Music Abstract: As a subculture created by black and Latino men and women in the late 1970s in the United States, hip-hop from the very beginning was closely related to urban environment. Undoubtedly, space has various functions in hip-hop music, among which its potential to express the group identity seems to be of the utmost importance. The goal of this paper is to examine selected rap lyrics which are rooted in the urban landscape: “N.Y. State of Mind” by Nas, “H.O.O.D” by Masta Ace, and “Street Struck,” in order to elaborate on the significance of space in hip-hop music. Interestingly, spaces such as the city as a whole, a neighborhood, and a particular street or even block which are referred to in the rap lyrics mentioned above express oneUMCS and the same broader category of urban environment, thus, words con- nected to urban spaces are often employed interchangeably. Keywords: hip-hop, space, urbanscape. Music has always been deeply rooted in everyday life of African American commu- nities, and from the very beginning it has been connected with certain spaces. If one takes into account slave songs chanted in the fields (often considered the first examples of rapping), or Jazz Era during which most blacks no longer worked on the plantations but in big cities, it seems that music and place were not only inseparable but also nat- urally harmonized. -

Automatic Recognition of Samples in Musical Audio
Automatic Recognition of Samples in Musical Audio Jan Van Balen MASTER THESIS UPF / 2011 Master in Sound and Music Computing. Supervisors: PhD Joan Serr`a,MSc. Martin Haro Department of Information and Communication Technologies Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona Acknowledgement I wish to thank my supervisors Joan Serr`aand Martin Haro for their priceless guidance, time and expertise. I would also like to thank Perfecto Herrera for his very helpful feedback, my family and classmates for their support and insightful remarks, and the many friends who were there to provide me with an excessive collection of sampled music. Finally I would like to thank Xavier Serra and the Music Technology Group for making all this possible by accepting me to the master. Abstract Sampling can be described as the reuse of a fragment of another artist's recording in a new musical work. This project aims at developing an algorithm that, given a database of candidate recordings, can detect samples of these in a given query. The problem of sample identification as a music information retrieval task has not been addressed before, it is therefore first defined and situated in the broader context of sampling as a musical phenomenon. The most relevant research to date is brought together and critically reviewed in terms of the requirements that a sample recognition system must meet. The assembly of a ground truth database for evaluation was also part of the work and restricted to hip hop songs, the first and most famous genre to be built on samples. Techniques from audio fingerprinting, remix recognition and cover detection, amongst other research, were used to build a number of systems investigating different strategies for sample recognition. -

Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc. -

The connection between the two is direct, the timing’s not coincidental, the backstory convoluted — and telling. Tishman Speyer built 1400 Mission for $65 million and Lumina for $620 million. THE MELVINS (USA) Album: «Hold It In» (Ipecac Recordings, VÖ: 10.10.2014)
THE MELVINS (USA) Album: «Hold It In» (Ipecac Recordings, VÖ: 10.10.2014) The Melvins return with a brand new album: „Hold It In“ To Be released 10 October via Ipecac Recordings. "Hold It In“ is a refreshing piece of fiction in a boring world of fact and bullsh*t," said Buzz Osborne. http://www.themelvins.net/ https://www.facebook.com/melvinsarmy The ever prolific Melvins return with „Hold It In“, their first studio album as a quartet since 2010's The Bride Screamed Murder. Joining Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover for the 12-song album are Butthole Surfers' guitar player Paul Leary and bass player JD Pinkus. The album was recorded in both Los Angeles and Austin earlier this year. "Paul is one of the best guitar players I have ever heard and Pinkus has an outside the box type of approach to both guitar and bass that you just have to let it ride. I can't believe this actually happened. I'm thrilled." "It's very rare you get a chance to work with three folks from the 'Break A Wish' foundation, all at the same time," said Pinkus. "I believe they'll remember their experience with me forever (or until they finally all lose their fight with S.I.D.S)." “Brass Cupcake is possibly my favorite track on „Hold It In“ We wrote this song with Pinkus and Paul in mind, once we knew this project was a go,” explained Dale Crover. “It's our version of what we think pop music should sound like.
