FOREWORD This year, Renault will continue its very proud and long-standing history in Formula 1 into a new decade, our sixth consecutive in the sport. We are in the midst of an interesting period, as we continue to engage within established global markets, while simultaneously developing our brand and its awareness in bigger areas like China and India within the widespread transformation of the automotive industry. Our commitment to Formula 1 has led to inventive marketing initiatives to increase awareness of, and commitment to, our brand. I look forward in particular to supporting new activations from Groupe Renault and its markets around E-Tech technology, which has been inspired by long-standing Formula 1 innovation. Our presence in the sport is also a unique opportunity for the team’s partners and sponsors to build relationships with one of the most important car manufacturers in the world, and for Renault to benefit from their know-how in their respective fields. 2020 is also an important transition year for the team. We aim to recapture the positive momentum from our first three years since returning to Formula 1 while preparing for next season, which will represent a new cycle for all teams. Having completed our initial construction phase, we are more determined than ever to be ready to attack and take advantage of the 2021 technical changes. 2020 is also the last year under the current agreements that govern Formula 1’s commercial rights. The new agreements and rules, already in advanced negotiation, should represent a new opportunity for Renault Sport Racing and for Renault to take part in a more balanced, competitive sport.

  • Press Kit 2018 // FOREWORD
Press Kit 2018 // FOREWORD It is a great source of pride for Groupe Renault and its employees to see the Renault name once again working its way to the sharp end of Formula 1. Motor racing is an intrinsic part of the Renault DNA and from Formula E races in cities to rallying through to Formula 1, we have always achieved outstanding results. Renault Sport Formula One Team’s ambition is clearly to uphold the outstanding record of the past and the 2017 season has confirmed we are on the right track. We are a team on the rise. We have two very talented drivers who are hungry for results. Enstone is regenerated and the workforce has already increased by more than 35%. At Viry, our long-term commitment in several motorsport categories allows to develop a detailed plan for our facilities. Our investment has so far been successfully translated to the track as we rose from ninth to sixth in the Constructors’ Championship in 2017 and ended the year with the fourth fastest car. The success of the programme in just two years is testament to the resilient plan laid down early in the creation of the team and the strong job done by Cyril and the entire Renault Sport Racing teams. I am convinced year three will take us one step closer to the long-term aim: winning races and challenging for championships. We are equally satisfied with the results we are seeing off-track. Formula 1’s new owners, have developed various marketing initiatives that have enabled the sport to grow into an even bigger brand and engage more closely with fans; steps forward which are incredibly important for us as the only mass market car constructor in the sport.

A comparison has been undertaken between car and bike racing, as represented by Formula One and MotoGp, to establish any differences in approach. The initial historical element of the research revealed that motor sport had been sponsored by vehicle manufacturers since the origins of the petrol combustion engine in the late 19th century. Any suggestion that sponsorship of motor sport is a recent, late 20th century science has been dispelled. The investigation found that the sponsors of top level car racing place major importance on achieving awareness for their brands through media exposure, particularly television.

Alpinestars is a technical safety gear manufacturer for motorcycle and auto racing (MotoGP, Motocross, Formula 1 and NASCAR), as well as extreme sports. They have also developed a fashion clothing division for men’s and women's sportswear lifestyle apparel, based upon Alpinestars' heritage in motorsports. Founded in 1963 by Sante Mazzarolo in Asolo, Italy, the company started out making hiking and ski boots, but quickly focused on making boots primarily for motocross racing. In the 1990s, the company branched out into manufacturing all types of protective and technical gear ranging from gloves and jackets to full leather suits for motorcycling and today they have offices in Los Angeles and Tokyo while the original headquarters and main research & development labs remain in Northern Italy. The company takes its name from the English translation of the Italian word for "edelweiss" (stelle alpine) which, when translated into English, literally means "Alpine stars". The company is today headed by Sante's son, Gabriele Mazzarolo[1] and their claim to fame is the Tech 10 boots that have been worn on the feet of some of the world’s best motocross and supercross racers. Alpinestars is now a global brand, developing technical racing products for MotoGP with leather suits, boots, gloves and protection worn by the last two World Champions Nicky Hayden and Casey Stoner. In auto racing, flame and heat retardant Nomex suits, footwear, gloves and underwear have been developed in Formula 1 and NASCAR with recent Champions Fernando Alonso and Jimmie Johnson. With the growth of motorcycling consciousness in the urban environment and Alpinestars leading influence in awareness and apparel style the fashion division was established, with design centres in California and Italy, to develop clothing for a sophisticated audience with an international sense of style and taste for fine detail and quality.

By using the lap-by-lap performance of each team along with the extent of sponsors’ exposure during a given race, Formulamoney has calculated the advertising value equivalent of team sponsorships factoring in the effects of race performance on brand visibility. The focus of the data is not time on-screen but is instead the global media value of each sponsor’s exposure. The data below covers all brands featured on the 2013 F1 cars and driver helmets, including sponsors, team owners and engine manufacturers. The data also includes the exposure achieved by the trackside advertisers at each race. The data is race-performance based so exposure is calculated for the duration of the race only and excludes branding of on-screen graphics. Exposure gained from pre-race events, the podium, practice sessions and qualifying is not included in the totals. Formulamoney also weights each race according to the size of its global television audience. This means that the most-watched races on the calendar are awarded a higher per second exposure value to account for their higher audience.
