Since 2005, Atlanta has suffered from extremely high foreclosure rates (nearly fi ve times the national average). The city is also not the home of any major high-tech companies and does not have a technology-based economy. The new trend revealed in the Census Bureau’s report is causing some of the city’s smartest people to leave Atlanta in favor of cities with a high-tech economy. Some brain drains that have occurred in the past have resulted in a region’s economy being completely destroyed. However, this will not happen in Atlanta because not all of the smart people are leaving and the city will still have some people with college degrees left. However, the brain drain could prevent the city from becoming more technology-based in the future. This trend could prevent anyone with a college degree in technology, including South’s graudates, from getting a tech-based job in Atlanta, therefore continuing the brain drain.
