Essentially, the different merchants associations from Jacksonville’s original, walkable shopping areas have gotten together to promote buying from local stores rather than national chains. By buying local, more money stays in Jacksonville, you contribute to keeping neighborhoods distinct and many locally-owned shops exclusively carry items you won’t find elsewhere. With that in mind, we put together our Go LO Holiday Gift Guide, so you’ll know what you can buy and where. From Christmas-themed dog toys to holiday meals, they’ve got what you need for your canine companion. Anita’s Garden Shop (3637 St. Johns Ave. 388-2060) Instead of showing up for a party with wine in hand, why not get a potted plant at Anita’s? Get an arrangement or some garden décor to brighten the holiday season. Avondale Artworks (3568 St. Johns Ave. 384-8797) Featuring local artists, this art studio may be the place to pick out the perfect piece of art for a loved one. This boutique carries everything from Lladro figurines to Waterford Avondale loves dogs and art. Outside of the pet stores, you’ll find that many of the merchants are Circa Gifts & Antiques (3639 St. Johns Ave. 387-2484) Circa is a small gift shop, really little more than dog-friendly (always ask, of course) and you’ll find doggie watering bowls outside some of the shops. one room. Yet it’s magically packed with things you find nowhere else. They help you select, wrap and will deliver your perfect gift. While there are some very upmarket stores at the Historic Shoppes of Avondale, you can find affordable gifts in shops such as Gottahaveit and Cowford Traders. Go local and get some awesome toys, games or books for the kiddies on your list. You’ll find gifts for kids from tots to those who haven’t grown up at all. Green Man Gourmet (3543 St. Johns Ave. 384-0002) For the cook or gourmet in your life, you might want to stop in at Green Man Gourmet, one of Avondale’s newest stores. Hobbie Horse (3550 St. Johns Ave. 389-7992) Pretty as a picture outfits for toddlers, storybooks and toys can be found at this family owned store. Hooshang Oriental Rugs (3571 St. Johns Ave. 384-7111) Contrary to the name, Hooshang doesn’t just sell rugs (but they do have those if you’re looking). If you’re looking for classic nutcracker figures, they have one of the largest collections I’ve seen in Jacksonville. They also often stock small Buddhas and other Oriental type stuff. J Ashley Boutique (3588 St. Johns Ave. 388-2118) With designer fashions and high-end women’s clothing, this boutique has business, formal and casual attire as well as a variety of accessories. Lanny’s Jewelry Works (3655 St. Johns Ave. 384-3848) Maybe the best gift you can give is something she already has. Lanny’s slogan is: “If another jeweler says it can’t be done, bring it to Lanny’s.” So if she hasn’t been able to get her grandmother’s ring sized anywhere else, Lanny’s might just do the trick. Petal (3643 St. Johns Ave. 619-8469) Carrying French Connection, Cape Madras, The Sak and other labels ladies appreciate, this clothing shop might have just the accessory you’re looking for. But really, chocolate is pretty much universal, so we can’t imagine not being happy to see the Peterbrooke logo. Open Road Bicycles (3544 St. Johns Ave. 388-9066) For the gearhead in your life, you can get a little something for them at this bicycle shop, from training computers to bike accessories. R. Roberts Gallery (3606 St. Johns Ave. 388-1188) Dr. Seuss prints, three dimensional art and excellent art from top local and national artists can be purchased at this Avondale gallery. Thompson Fine Shoes (3641 St. Johns Ave. 381-9217) Carrying fine shoes including FitFlops and Jack Rogers, plus affordable accessories. Underwoods (3617 St. Johns Ave. 388-5406) Underwoods is a Jacksonville institution. They carry the best in porcelain, fine china, silver servers and jewelry. Lines carried include Herend, William Yeoward, Baccarat, Lalique, Daum, Saint Louis, David Yurman, DiModolo, Roberto Coin and Judith Ripka.
