8:30am–9:50am The coup: how to lead and create disruption within organizations and industries

In 1970, Gil Scott-Heron released a single that would go down as one of the anthems of grassroots move- ments, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. It’s the perfect theme song for what businesses are going through these days. The massive change most of us are experiencing is happening faster than any- one could have predicted. The impact is larger than we ever imagined as companies, movements, and institutions we thought were too big to fail are failing. And the organizations and people who are often toppling regimes are relative unknowns with limited experience, no legacy, and who usually exist outside the establishment. Because of that, they (and their activities) are undetected until it’s too late.

This change is usually defined as “disruption.” But it’s not disruption—it’s a coup.

The anti-establishment forces are challenging what you do, how you do it, and how you define success by writing and following their own rules. So what do you do? Give up? Throw in the towel? Just hand the keys to the planet over to millennials? Go down with your long-held beliefs that there’s only one way to do things?

That’s what this humourous and insightful presentation will cover. The revolution will not be televised. But during this keynote address, it certainly will be planned.

9:50am–10:15am BREAK

10:15am–12:10pm What can Canada do on a global stage to survive and thrive

As Canada drives to increase agriculture exports, the global environment for increased trade is as difficult as ever. The winds of nationalism and protectionism are blowing not just in the United States but throughout Europe, making the renegotiation of the United States- Mexico-Canada Agreement difficult and calling into question the viability of CETA. Opening up China’s market remains as difficult a process as ever.

Given all this, what can Canada do on the global stage to survive and thrive as a small, open economy and trading nation? What is our path to greater prosperity and in navigating the choppy waters of international trade? The Honourable Rona Ambrose will help address these questions. 7 GROWCANADA 2018

THE HON. RONA AMBROSE Former leader of Canada’s official Opposition in the House of Commons The Honourable Rona Ambrose is a dynamic national leader, a champion for the rights of women and girls, the former Leader of Canada’s Official Opposition in the House of Commons, and the former leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

As a self-proclaimed ‘policy geek’, Rona is personally responsible for the development of several federal policies, ranging from industrial strategies in military procurement to health innovation to improvements to sexual assault laws. Rona is a determined public policy expert who understands that government actions can have a real impact on families and businesses across the country.

Today, Ambrose is a Global Fellow at the Wilson Center’s Canada Institute in Washington, serves on the advisory board of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, and is a member of the Advisory Council on the United States- Mexico-Canada Agreement. Update on recommendations from the Agri-Food Economic Strategy Table

The report from the federal government’s Agri-Food Economic Strategy Table was delivered this fall and it’s a very ambitious document. This national panel of agriculture and agri-food industry experts took a hard look at the barriers to innovation and growth in the sector, and put forward an extensive policy prescription to be followed in order to unlock Canada’s potential. Lee Moats, a member of the Agri-Food Economic Strategy Table, will tell us how the process unfolded, what was recommended and why, and what government needs to do now in order to implement the report’s key recommendations.

LEE MOATS Saskatchewan farmer and member of the Agri-Food Economic Strategy Table

Lee Moats has been passionate about agriculture from a very young age. That passion led Lee to a bach- elor of science in agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan, a career as a professional agrologist and as a farmer.

Lee has served on many board of directors including the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association, Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, Pulse Canada, Riceton and Cross Country Co-ops, was a founding commissioner of the Saskatchewan Winter Cereals Commission and has been a volunteer firefighter since 1976.

Lee currently farms full time on the farm, which has been in the family since 1910.

9 GROWCANADA 2018

12:10pm–1:30pm LUNCH

1:30pm Canada as a world food superpower: a progress report on the way to 2025

The federal government has set some lofty goals for Canadian agriculture and agri-food, as the recently released Agri-Food Economic Strategy Table Report has set a goal of $85 billion in annual exports by 2025. That’s an annual growth rate of triple the current rate of overall economic growth for the next seven years straight. It begs the obvious question—can we do it? Does Canada have the right public policy environ- ment, the right economic fundamentals and the right infrastructure to make this happen? Brian Lee Crowley will take a hard look at Canada’s economic fundamentals and our infrastructure scorecard, offering his views on what it might really take for Canada to become the global agri-food heavyweight envisioned by government.

Brian Lee Crowley has headed up the Macdonald- Laurier Institute (MLI) in Ottawa since its inception in March 2010, coming to the role after a long and distinguished record in the think tank world. He was the founder of the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies

2:20pm–2:35pm BREAK

This session will explore some of the infrastructure challenges and opportunities that will help Canadian agriculture reach its potential of becoming the number two global exporter by 2025.

MODERATOR: Brian Lee Crowley

11 GROWCANADA 2018

Panellists:

The digital revolution in agriculture is data-based allowing input suppliers and farmers to better under- stand their agronomic needs at a micro-level and allocate various resources to reach their full potential. A critical component for agriculture competitive- ness is that Canadian farmers and agribusinesses have access to reliable broadband internet to remain competitive in a global marketplace. Without broad- band internet access Canadian farmers are not able to fully realize the tremendous benefits of the digital revolution within agriculture.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2018 8:30am–9:00am BREAKFAST

9:00am–10:40am Can agriculture save the planet before it destroys it?

The sustainable production of agriculture will be increasingly on the minds of governments, industry, and even many consumers with the global population expected to reach more than nine billion in less than 30 years. Not only do we have to increase the amount of food available, we have to find ways to minimize agriculture’s footprint on the planet. There is no activity that humankind engages in that has a bigger impact on the planet than agriculture. Therefore one of the great challenges that confront all of us in the next 30 years is to figure out how to maximize the production of food while minimizing the negative consequences of agriculture. Science and technology may hold the key to addressing many of the world’s biggest problems but only if scientific breakthroughs make it to fields. In a hot, flat, hyper-connected world, public perception of risk, not science, may ultimately determine if agriculture saves the planet by 2050 or destroys it.
