Alone four sultans held power in succession during the 1421. Egypt became economically weak due to incessant wars moreover four plagues ravagedthecountryinaperiodofthirtyyears.Oneyearlater,Barsbaybecame sultan, his reign is marked by a series of fatwas against Christian, with interdictiontoemploytheminadministration,confiscationandotherfinancial discriminations, destruction of the churches and imposing other steps on dressing.ThispolicyledmanyChristiansandJewstoconverttoIslam. Coptsbeingminoritysufferedmorethantherestofthecountryunderthese conditions.AhmadDarraginhisstudy,wrote: “The persecutions are the result of government directives.... These directives can be classified in several categories: (1) prohibition against employing [Christians and Jews] in government offices; (2) confiscations, contributions imposed onthecommunity,varioustypesoffinancialobligations;(3) humiliating measures regarding dress and manners; (4) demolition of religious edifices. These various harassments, periodically renewed, lead to conversions of Christians and Jews who desired to maintain their employment by government; Abū alMa āsin’s forceful comment on the situation is telling: “The Qa ī of the ruler is a recently convertedMuslim,hisShaykhisaChristian”. 7

In the year 1412, Sultan alMū’ayyad gathered Jews and Copts in the mosque of the caliph alākim, in the presence of Muslim leaders, and he demandeddoublingthecurrenttax,whichispaidbythenon.Ayear later,measuresbecameevenmorestringent.In1414,alMū’ayyadforbadethe Copts access to his offices and those of his emirs. In 1419, he increased restrictionsregardingvestmentsandtheirusage. 9 PersecutionscontinuedundertheruleofBarsbay(14221438).On1stMay 1422, a new directive was issued prohibiting the employment of Copts in publicoffices. In the year 1422 Barsbay forbade Christian pilgrims access to the Holy SepulchreduetothefrequentharassmentsbyCatalansandGenoesepiratesto theEgyptianshipping.Tocarryontheirpilgrimage,Coptswereobligedtopay heavybribe.Inretaliationtothat,intheyear1423,the negus Yeshaqattacked theMuslimsofEthiopiaandravagedtheIslamickingdomofJabart.Barsbay took his vengeance on the Copts. And only by the intervention of Eric VII, kingofDenmark,intheyear1426,wasreopenedtheHolySepulchre. ThestateofconfusionoftheMamlukadministrationsparedneitherCopts norMuslimsfromencroachmentsontheirpossessions,norweretheyprotected fromcontinuoussearchesoftheirhomes.Thesituationofthepeopleworsened byanoutbreakoftheplague.InUpperEgypt,themaraudingHawwarahArabs descended on the unprotected valley and looted both cattle and agricultural produces,whileaplagueofratsfinishedwhatwasleft. Frankishfleet,intheyear1440,attackedthreeIslamicshipsinthewaters of , a port city on the Mediterranean coast, and its Muslim sailors were either killed or drowned. Jirjis, a Christian native of Damietta, whose ethnicity is unclear,celebratedthesadnewsandthisinfuriatedthebereaved Musliminhabitants,whoseizedhimandwantedtokillhim.TheviceroyNā ir alDīnibnMu ammadibnA madibnSall āmcametohisrescueandputhim infrontofthecourt.JirjisfeignedapostasytoIslam,thinkingthatthatwould savehisskin.Butthiswastonoavail,andintheendhewascondemnedto death,andhisbodywasburned.ThemobthenpillagedtheChristianchurches. InCairo,in1441,aCoptbythenameofal‘Afifwasarrestedforcommitting crimes;hewasbeaten,andwasreleasedonlyafterhehadespousedIslam,but his children were allowed to retain their Christianity. AlthoughtheCopticsourceshaverefrainedfrommentioningnamesofCopts whoapostatisedtoIslaminthelaterMiddleAges,buttheIslamicannalsof those times listed a considerable number of them, especially those who occupied the highest positions in the administration, from secretarial to ministerial dignitaries as well as those in finances and in the high Islamic judicialsystem. To add to Gabriel’s problems, he and the negus of Ethiopia were not on goodterms.Infact,Yeshaqceasedtosendthetraditionalcontributionofthe kingsofEthiopiatotheEgyptianchurch. JohnXI(14271452)(successorofGabrielV)duringhispatriarchatethe relations with Ethiopia returned back to normal, and in the year 1431 the Negus dispatched special embassy carrying gifts of gold and rare medicinal productstotheMamluksultans.Theembassysubmittedaroyalbriefasking theauthoritiesinEgypttorefrainfromharassingtheCoptsandtoletthemlive inpeaceunmolestedandtheirchurchessecured. Afterhisordination,MatthewII(14521465)tookresidenceinChurchof the Virgin at ārit Zūwaylah, 10 which was a Coptic quarter. Apparently the situation of the Copts in his times was relatively secure and peaceful, the sultansbeingtooinvolvedintheirowntroubleswiththeirMamlukamirsdid not devote much time to the and his church. Shortly after the investitureofMatthewII,probablyintheyear1453, an Ethiopian embassy arrived in Cairo with gifts for the sultan and a request to appoint a Coptic archbishop fortheircountry byMatthewII.Theyaskedforcontinuedpeace andsecurityfortheCoptsandtheirchurchesinEgypt.AccordinglyGabriel, themonk,wasconsecratedasbishopoftheAbyssinia. During the fifteenth century, relations between the Coptic and Syrian churches were strong. In the event of internal troubles the Syrians could dependontheCoptsforhelp. 1.1.DestructionofChurchesandmonasteriesinthe XVthcentury In1430themonksinJohn Kame monasteryabandonedtheir monasteryand residedinDayralSury ān,bringingwiththemtherelicsoftheirpatronsaint. 11

Intheyear1439,theChurchofAlMu‘allaqahinOldCairowaspartially destroyedbygovernmentrepresentativesonthepretextthattheywererecent additionscontradictingthetermsoftheCovenantof‘Umar. InthelatterpartoftheXVthcenturythemonasteryofSaintAnthonyand themonasteryofSaintPaulneartheRedSeaandtheirlibrariesweredestroyed bytheBedouinswhoworkedthereintheserviceofthemonks. 12 The monastery of saint Arsenius at Tu rah, was deserted by the fifteenth century. 13 1.2.TheRelicsintheXVcentury In this context troubles, insecurity and persecutions, the Copts tried to protectthemostpreciousheritagei.e.therelicsofSaintsandliturgicalbooks. therelicsofSaintGeorgeweretranslatedtothechurchinOldCairothatbears his name, during the patriarchate of Gabriel V according to Coptic and Ethiopiantraditions. 14 But this weak situation of the Copts, allowed the Venetians to steal the Copts’mostimportantrelic,theheadofSaintMark;anactthatdeeplyaffected theCopticcommunity.

Conclusion I WeseethattheEgyptiansingeneral,andtheCoptsinparticular,hadavery hardlifeinthefifteenthcentury.Consequentlythepopulationdecreased,the monasteries were deserted. 2. John of Assiut and his pastoral activity We may ask what motivated a bishop of Assiut to deliver a homily for the dioceseof? 1. Judging from his knowledge of the Coptic hagiography, Scriptures, John wasthemostlearnedpersonofhisgeneration. 2.AccordingtothelistofthebishopsattendingtheconcoctionoftheMyronin 1458AD,therewerenobishopsforEsna,oranysoutherncity.Onlysix bishops attended this ceremony: Isaac bishop of Minia, John bishop of Assiut Manfalūt and Abū Tīğ (our author), Michael bishop of Qusiyyah, Isaac bishop of Sundufah and Ma allah, John bishop of Fayoum and MichaelofQusqam,HenceAssiutisnearestcitytoEsnahavingabishop. 15 3.Anautobiographicalsection,containedinthehomilyonSeverusofAntioch, shows that John of Assiut (even before his ordination as bishop) had an excellent relationship with many persons including the monastic organisationsofKalam ūnandAssiut. 16 4. From the homily delivered by John of Assiut on the consecration of the ChurchoftheArchangel,bythehandofJohnXI(14271452),weknow thatthebishopofFayyoumwasIsaac. 17 5. He had sound knowledge of the Coptic language because he was able to composea psali forSundayinthatlanguage.
