Ultra HD Forum Guidelines October 19, 2020 Revision: 2.4 Ultra HD Forum 8377 Fremont Blvd., Suite 117 Fremont, CA 94538 UNITED STATES Ultra HD Forum Ultra HD Forum Guidelines, V2.4 October 19, 2020 Page ii Ultra HD Forum Ultra HD Forum Guidelines, V2.4 October 19, 2020 Foreword This new version 2.4 of the Ultra HD Forum Guidelines offers a holistic view of all the different UHD technologies. These Guidelines use the concepts of a “foundation layer” with readily available mature technologies and an “enhancement layer” with newer technologies. This work represents over five years of collaborative effort. Our new guidelines would not have been possible without the leadership of Jim DeFilippis, who represents Fraunhofer and chairs our Guidelines Work Group. All the companies that have participated in this effort over the years are listed below, but Jim has expressed his gratitude for this new revision specifically to Bill Redmann (InterDigital), Chris Seeger (Comcast/NBCU), Chris Johns (BSkyB), Richard Doherty (Dolby), Dr. George Bokuchava (Tulix), Pete Sellar (Xperi), Andrew Cotton (BBC) and Andrew Dunne (BBC). There are many updates described by Jim on the next page. I hope you will enjoy reading today. If you want to know more about Ultra HD, and how it can be deployed, I invite you to join the Ultra HD Forum. You can start by visiting our website: www.ultrahdforum.org. Objective Measurement and Analysis of the Quality of Tone Mapping. A new section was added to the Guidelines, based on the work of ITU-R BT.2124, “Objective metric for the assessment of the potential visibility of color differences in television”, that explains why it is important to consider carefully the technology and methods when converting to or from different color spaces. Included is work undertaken by NBCU to evaluate a number of color conversion LUTs (Look Up Tables) to and from SDR imagery using ITU-R Rec 709 color space to HDR imagery using ITU-R Rec 2100. This is most important when deciding how best to mix formats in production as well as to provide a consistent and pleasing SDR video program derived from an HDR Wide Color program. 2. UHD Live Event Distribution over OTT. Another new section of the Guidelines which provides insight into the creation and distribution of live content, produced in UHD with HDR and Wide Color and then distributed via the Internet (OTT). While there are similarities to the existing live workflows for UHD, as documented in the Guidelines, there are unique challenges especially for distribution and the support of UHD formats by the typical end devices including IP set-top boxes, smart TV apps and mobile device apps. Description of a typical live streaming workflow, with recommendations for formats and parameters such as FEC and ‘ladder’ bandwidths, as well as the support of various formats by platforms such as Amazon Fire, Android TV, Roku 4k, Apple TV 4k, and Chromcast are detailed. Support by these platforms for the main HDR formats, PQ10, HLG10, DV (Dolby Vision), SL-HDR1 (Interdigital), and HDR 10+(Samsung) is listed. Audio codec support is also listed. 3. Annexes. The Guidelines has updated several of the Annexes as well as adding a new Annex on the support of UHD by DVB-T2. The Annexes represent new and developing technologies that are on the near horizon but have not yet fully developed or deployed. Of note is the update to ATSC 3.0 detailing the ability to carry OTT services, the update to the proposed UHD standard for Brazil and an update to the ST 2110 Annex including the efforts of AMWA (Advanced Media Workflow Association) to standardized the discovery and orchestration of ST 2110 streams.
