n 1922 Harvey D. Gibson, president of Manufacturer’s Trust, was Iapproached by a Locust Valley neighbor with the idea of forming a club and building a private on a nearby piece of property. Gibson asked the preeminent golf architect Charles Blair Macdonald to evaluate the site’s potential as a golf course. With Macdonald’s enthusiastic response, Gibson formed an organizing committee of eleven very distinguished Long Island sportsmen. They named the club after Frost Creek, an inlet of Long Island Sound that was to play a significant role in the character of the first five holes on the back nine. Macdonald’s course at The Creek was built by Founded: Seth Raynor, who was aided by Alex Balfour of 1922 Carnoustie. It offers golfers the “best of both worlds,” Course Opened: 1923 possessing a mix of parkland holes and seaside links. Architect: The first five holes play through tall stands of trees, Charles Blair Macdonald and the first five on the back nine are dominated by Seth Raynor water, reeds, and sand-based rough. The other eight holes are quite rolling, with a scattering of trees. Championship Tees: Macdonald also built a tide gate to insure a constant Par: 70 water level on the seaside holes. Yardage: 6,454 Course Rating: 76.0 The Creek has hosted MGA events in the Slope: 144 past, including the 1998 Met Open, 2007 Mid- Amateur, and 2013 WMGA/MGA Women’s Met Amateur. FINAL FIELD

111th Met Amateur Championship The Stanwich Club, Greenwich, Conn. August 1-4, 2013

Runner-Up Trevor Randolph (left) and Champion Pat Wilson Pat Wilson of Panther Valley captured his first MGA victory in spectacular fashion when he defeated Trevor Randolph of Arcola, 8 & 7, in the finals at the 111th Met Amateur Championship at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. Wilson, who recently graduated from St. John’s University, took control of the 36-hole final early on, racing out to a 7-up lead through the first 9 holes. His MGA championship experience enabled him to weather the storm when Randolph seized momentum on the back 9 to diminish Wilson’s lead to only 2-up. Wilson kept his cool, though, and held the lead to close out the match with the largest margin of victory since 1960.

History of the Met Amateur The Met Amateur, the MGA’s oldest championship, was played for the first time in 1899 at and quickly became the country’s most distinguished regional amateur championship. The “Met Am” is rivaled for longevity in this country only by the U.S. Amateur and . The original championship plate was donated by H.B. Hollins, with the condition that it be retired after three victories by representatives of the same club, a feat accomplished for Nassau Country Club by Findlay Douglas (two wins) and Jerry Travers. The subsequent trophy was a gift of then-MGA president Daniel Chauncey. The Met Amateur immediately set a lofty precedent for quality. Its first two winners, Herbert Harriman (1899) and (1900), also were that year’s U.S. Amateur champions. Two early rivalries — first between Travis and Two-Time Met Am Champion Douglas, then Travis and Travers — gave the tournament Johnson Wagner national attention. In subsequent years the Met Amateur has been won by the likes of , , Ray Billows, , Dick Siderowf, Frank Strafaci, George Zahringer III, Johnson Wagner, and Jerry Courville Sr. and Jr. — all top names in the history of amateur golf. Three Met Amateur champions, Zahringer III, Courville Jr. and Ken Bakst, have also won the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. The Met Amateur has always been played at match play, with only slight format changes over the years. It remains the Met Area’s most important amateur event — a demanding, sometimes grueling test of championship golf with the victor surviving multiple days of 36-hole competition.
