With Macdonald’s enthusiastic response, Gibson formed an organizing committee of eleven very distinguished Long Island sportsmen. They named the club after Frost Creek, an inlet of Long Island Sound that was to play a significant role in the character of the first five holes on the back nine. Macdonald’s course at The Creek was built by Founded: 1922 Seth Raynor, who was aided by Alex Balfour of Carnoustie. It offers golfers the “best of both worlds,” Course Opened: 1923 possessing a mix of parkland holes and seaside links. Michael McGovern Hackensack Golf Club MET AMATEUR 111th Met Amateur Championship The Stanwich Club, Greenwich, Conn. August 1-4, 2013 Runner-Up Trevor Randolph (left) and Champion Pat Wilson Pat Wilson of Panther Valley captured his first MGA victory in spectacular fashion when he defeated Trevor Randolph of Arcola, 8 & 7, in the finals at the 111th Met Amateur Championship at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. Wilson, who recently graduated from St. John’s University, took control of the 36-hole final early on, racing out to a 7-up lead through the first 9 holes. His MGA championship experience enabled him to weather the storm when Randolph seized momentum on the back 9 to diminish Wilson’s lead to only 2-up. Wilson kept his cool, though, and held the lead to close out the match with the largest margin of victory since 1960. ~Final~ Pat Wilson, Panther Valley def. The “Met Am” is rivaled for longevity in this country only by the U.S. Amateur and Western Amateur. The original championship plate was donated by H.B. Hollins, with the condition that it be retired after three victories by representatives of the same club, a feat accomplished for Nassau Country Club by Findlay Douglas (two wins) and Jerry Travers. The subsequent trophy was a gift of then-MGA president Daniel Chauncey. The Met Amateur immediately set a lofty precedent for quality. Its first two winners, Herbert Harriman (1899) and Walter Travis (1900), also were that year’s U.S. Amateur champions. Two early rivalries — first between Travis and Two-Time Met Am Champion Douglas, then Travis and Travers — gave the tournament Johnson Wagner national attention. In subsequent years the Met Amateur has been won by the likes of Jess Sweetser, Willie Turnesa, Ray Billows, Robert Gardner, Dick Siderowf, Frank Strafaci, George Zahringer III, Johnson Wagner, and Jerry Courville Sr.
